TV PACE THREAD. NO SPOILERS AS IT WILL BE ON I-PLAYER

The BBC teases: "Nightsleeper is a real-time thriller set on a sleeper train travelling from Glasgow to London, while a government agency desperately tries to intervene in the rapidly-escalating events onboard.

"Can two people who’ve never met, one on the train and one not, work together to save the lives of its disparate group of passengers as the Heart of Britain service hurtles towards what might quite literally be its final destination?"

"Abby Aysgarth, the Acting Technical Director at the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre, is finally about to take a well-earned holiday when she receives a phone call that will change everything - the UK railway network is under attack.

Meanwhile Joe Roag, an off-duty cop onboard and hoping for a quiet night. However, over the next six rollercoaster hours, Joe’s about to get anything but, as he and Abby battle both their own distrust and the unpredictable behaviour of the person or persons now in control, desperate to try and stop the Heart of Britain from reaching the end of the line, in more ways than one…"

Joe Cole, who's appeared in hit gangster dramas Peaky Blinders and Gangs of London, plays off-duty cop Joe Roag, while Alexandra Roach, whose screen credits include C4 drama No Offence and period piece Sanditon, stars as cyber security boss, Abby Aysgarth.

The series also stars Alex Ferns (The Devil’s Hour), Sharon Small (The Bay), James Cosmo (Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan), David Threlfall (Shameless), Daniel Cahill (The Control Room) and Lois Chimimba (Vigil).

While an impressive cast is completed by Gabriel Howell (The Fence), Katie Leung (Harry Potter), Leah MacRae (Rosie Molloy Gives Up Everything), Ruth Madeley (Years and Years), Adam Mitchell (Mother’s Day), Pamela Nomvete (Andor), Scott Reid (Maxine), Sharon Rooney (Jerk) and Parth Thakerar (Gangs of London).

Did everyone else enjoy Abby’s Mary Berry bomber jacket billowing out behind her in the wind as she was up the tower trying to change the signal to red?

Yes the billowing was magnificent.

I enjoyed it, I was gripped while abby was sprinting to the traffic lights with her various cables whilst the ragtag bunch on the runaway train braced for impact. Think I'd have been on the floor under the tables.

All in all silly but very entertaining.

Clawdy · 01/10/2024 08:04

"Silly but very entertaining " sums it up perfectly!

And that little boy was such a good actor.

I have to say that I found James Cosmo conking out and smashing the laptop with his head just as he was about to apply the brake absolutely hilarious, kind of Pythonesque.

I suppose it had to happen to allow Abby the final “save”.

I enjoyed it because it was crap. I thought that the action scenes were fairly well done. The emotional bonding ones not so much, scripts didn’t quite hit the mark. I thought that the girl in the pink top who had the alcoholic father ( of whom “Trevor” reminded her) was the best actress actually. Her emotional scenes were quite authentic.Journalist was a bit wooden.

Gloriia · 01/10/2024 09:12

'I have to say that I found James Cosmo conking out and smashing the laptop with his head just as he was about to apply the brake absolutely hilarious, kind of Pythonesque.'

Oh it was a real 'not now!' moment. I do think someone could have gently eased him to a laying down position so he wasn't kept with his head on the laptop

deeahgwitch · 01/10/2024 09:34

All the technical stuff went way over my head. Blush

Piggywaspushed · 01/10/2024 10:05

The ending was a literal anti climax wasn't it? The train just - ermm- stopped. CGI budget must have run out for at least a minor crash into the buffers sequence.

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/10/2024 10:07

The train stopped as wasn't being controlled anymore so the red lights and brakes worked

the lad was brilliant in it (mouse) Joe cole is so not hot. I was sad when rigger guy was squashed cos he was.
I don't think bad cop (his name escapes me meant to shoot anyone. he said stand still or something, then train guy jumped on to him and the gun went off.

the daftest bit was them not considering that floppy hair guy , even though he lived in Abbies spare room.

Yeah, it was no Line of Duty... where were internal affairs??

Samcro · 01/10/2024 10:55

never seen line of duty. but get the point. how a man can just shut himself in t room with a young woman like that ??

Oh I thought it was exciting! The squealing brakes, the billowing smoke, the will it won't it stop in time tension. Thought they might have squirted foam just in case but maybe no time even though they knew where it was headed.

Wonder if there'll be a techno hack series 2 this time maybs with all electric cars hacked and running amok.

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/10/2024 12:00

And a lot of smoke and wind @Piggywaspushed

Well - as I said upthread, what a pile of steaming utter crap. I was only watching to see how they got out of it (and i'm still not sure Grin)
But the storyline! the acting! SOOOO bad! Jo-wuh and Abi whispering sweet nothings to each other for about 15 minutes whilst the train is rocketing towards London (or was it Folkstone at the time?Hmm) - I was screaming 'Do you have time for this?????'
The Police boarding the stationary part of the train - take off after the journalist who's legging it. Do they catch the journalist and take her to a nice warm, well-lit police station with coffee and phones and access to a Lawyer? Do they HELL! They bring her back to the train! The Cold, Dark, Isolated Train, to question her! (In fact the only person who could act - the journalist. Oh and the rather annoying 'mouse')

I still don't understand why the grumpy old man uncoupled the train and then JUMPED into the front part. Why? What for?

And - what was the whole 'handbag/laptop snatch' from the woman with the baby carriage and her associates, in the 1st episode? If Yaz did the connecting up of the electronic thingy under the floor? I must have missed something when I was screaming at the TV (in my head obvs)

And so it was Pev. And he was OK with a child/people on board the train - cos he knew Abi could handle it. Hmm

the80sweregreat · 01/10/2024 14:11

Yaz didn't really look the techy type tbh ! (Not that you want to judge a book etc .. )
Must have been an easy connection for her

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/10/2024 14:58

@ciderhouserules grumpy old man wanted his watch

My dh works in IT and the using all sorts of mixed cables etc really annoyed him. They wouldn't be compatible with each other so none of it would work. That and the GUI on her mobile phone so she was able to just easily select the light she needed... he was quite annoyed. He did say if you leave your brain out of it and enjoy the ride it was good fun.

He mentioned if Abby had got on the plane and went on her holiday, the team working on the case would have seen it was her code and therefore her behind it all, and she would have been arrested. She wouldn't have been able to look into the emails, or prove that the whole teams code would have been used. She would not have been able to defend herself or prove her innocence so easily and quickly. And someone who supposedly felt an almost parental relationship with her, Pev was okay for all that to happen to her?

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/10/2024 16:36

I was amazed that both her phone and Satellite phone didn't get a flat battery

She was talking on it practically for 6hrs

Gloriia · 01/10/2024 16:46

Yes I bet tech staff plus train staff were all spitting their tea out in horror. Makes you wonder why even though only a drama they can't make it plausible by getting tech experts to devise devices that would be believable.

Surely in a runaway train situation some big blockers can be applied to lines to slow it, only takes a few leaves or branches around here and that's it, game over.

butterpuffed · 01/10/2024 19:09

I couldn't follow any of the tecchie stuff but did enjoy it , unlike quite a few others who still watched it all !

So that was a good twist
