It is going through South America.

"The four new famous faces embarking on an epic 12,500 km race of a lifetime are:
Broadcaster Jeff Brazier and his son, Freddy
Actor Kola Bokinni and his cousin, Mary Ellen
Broadcaster Kelly Brook and her husband, Jeremy
Radio 2 host Scott Mills and his husband (then fiancé), Sam"

"Their journey begins in Belém, Northern Brazil - the gateway to the Amazon - and will pass through five checkpoints across the length of South America, to reach the finish line in the Andes, Frutillar in Southern Chile."

They were working in the capital, when most jobs are out on farms, and only getting cash when most jobs include a bed for the night and a meal or two. Makes sense to me that that job could earn more than most of the others.

Yes, bits were a bit convenient. But that’s been the case in every series - whether real, contrived or just the way the editing makes it look! Honestly I think if you try to pick it apart too much it takes away from the fun of just enjoying it.

RosePetalsRose · 20/09/2024 22:36

They needed to show more of how they did every day things like eating, negotiating, bickering. Was getting bored of seeing them on buses.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 21/09/2024 06:36

considering they won they didnt get much air time, not so many revelations

BiscuityBoyle · 21/09/2024 07:28

I wonder if Jeff realised that spending time with Freddie and enjoying themselves was more important than winning. It’s not like they, or a charity, gained anything for winning so enjoying themselves opportunity was far more important.

Peccary · 21/09/2024 08:28

I'm not bothered about the money thing, Chile is western European prices.

The mysterious two bus tickets did feel wrong though.

I only enjoyed this episode for the nostalgia as we did a similar trip by bus, all very rushed at the end.

Amazed Scott Mills has enough personality to be a radio presenter, he was so dill. Shame he won - the other contestants were so much more interesting.

He hasn't! God knows how he's made it to this level!

Chile pays higher wages than other countries in South America and they were taking time out in the final leg to work , which no one would have wanted to do – admittedly they were taking time out because they had to wait anyway, but I think it was just a massive stroke of luck for them. as was things like other buses getting stuck in traffic. They were all do close in the final leg, it was all about elements of luck for them to get ahead of other others and in the end the discrepancy between first and last was vast.

I didn’t warm Scott either but I didn’t dislike him and since nothing was at stake - who cares?, If anyone had to win, I would’ve liked it to be Kelly, who came across incredibly well.

another great series, but please BBC for the next one a bit less emoting and background and more practicalities

purpleme12 · 21/09/2024 20:23

I really wanted Mary-Ellen and Kola (or Kokakola as my child calls him) to win ☹️

Samcro · 22/09/2024 09:16

i can't warm to Kelly maybe because of this.

I wanted the cousins to win. it was odd the Jeff just gave up.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 22/09/2024 09:54

i had no idea about Kelly and I liked what I saw of her, also liked Mary-Ellen, who is Not a celebrity

it wasnt a popularity contest although Jeff seemed to think it was, he annoyed me quite quickly.

Deliiciousllydifffident · 23/09/2024 19:46

We really enjoyed this series. We liked them all and didn’t care who won. South America looks amazing.

DramaLlamaBangBang · 25/09/2024 20:31

I don't see the animosity over Jeff. He seems like a decent guy doing his best. He learnt to just enjoy himself with his son in the end.

Arconialiving · 25/09/2024 20:43

I thought the same @DramaLlamaBangBang

It was terrible planning to have the final leg over a major holiday weekend.

The point of this series has gone completely over your head, hasn't it?

H34th · 27/09/2024 13:28

I've just finished watching.
I don't remember Scott and Sam doing anything fun/ any sightseeing. They were constantly on buses or doing a boring job here and there. Looked very dull and they seemed very miserable through all of it. Sam, who was meant to be good with money, spent it all quite easily. Scott kept on second-guessing everything and complaining. Has he had something done in his face -all the grimacing made it look odd...
They didn't do anything better so really not winners in my eyes.

Kola and Mary Ellen made the most of the race. You can tell they really enjoyed it and had many firsts. It's interesting to see the celebrity paired with a completely regular person (I.e not spouse or child of the said celebrity)- they must have very different lives at this stage.
Made me also think, why Kola didn't pick one of his many siblings instead...

Kelly, whom I knew nothing about, I liked. She was very positive and hard working.

Jeff talking about his 19 year old being independent and leaving home made me feel uncomfortable. His son is not ready. Imagine being reminded that your home is not going to be your home for much longer.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 27/09/2024 13:35

They said that they were like siblings as they had both spent time living in (not just visiting) each other's households

H34th · 27/09/2024 13:38

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit
yes, they did. But if you were his actual brother or sister you'd probably feel you are in a better position to be picked.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 27/09/2024 14:04

I have cousins I like much better than siblings!

H34th · 27/09/2024 14:54

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit they were clearly a good team!
I just hope his relationships with his siblings are good too. It must have been very hard losing their mum and later their dad.

heretoeternity · 02/10/2024 20:13

Well, just caught up with the final programme and I'm a bit disappointed Sam & Scott won because they weren't much fun to watch. I think I mean Scott really, he didn't seem into it at all. Ah, well it's all stuff and nonsense really. I watch it for the scenery etc and travel memories. Funny when Jeff said " we're real backpackers now"....sort of, Jeff.
