I can't see another thread about this programme starting Jodie Foster, Kali Rees and Fiona Shaw.

From IMBd
"In Ennis, Alaska, the men that operate a research station vanish. To solve the case, Detectives Danvers and Navarro will have to confront the darkness themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice."

I watched the first episode yesterday and I really liked it.

I read a lot of books about, and set in, Alaska so I was disposed to like it.
It was good to be cwtched up under a blanket watching the story unfold in the icy Arctic darkness.

Has anyone else seen it, and what do you think.

PS I love Jodie Foster and Fiona Shaw! I met FS many years ago and stammered some incoherent appreciation. I still blush when I think of it. ☺️

I'm enjoying it although I'm also finding it easy enough to wait for the next ep.

So who did Navarro see at the place of the guy who has killed his wife?

Who is the son of Fiona Shaw's dead partner?

muckandnettles · 07/02/2024 16:30

I can't say I'm exactly enjoying it, but it's compelling certainly. The slowly thawing group of dead men on the ice rink is a truly horrific sight that I wish I could un-see! I also love Jodie Foster, think she's brilliant and I know she is going to solve it in the end somehow. Just hope the final explanation actually is worth it.

Loving the series.

The young actor who plays Jodie Foster's protogée is actually British from Hackney!

And Christopher Eccleston, Dervla Kieran and Fiona Shaw to boot!

I am wondering why they are using so many British actors for American parts.
I mean they are all great, but it's surprising I think.

FrostyFogg · 07/02/2024 16:55

@diddl I think it was the Matthew McConaughey character. But I might have mis-remembered. Certainly someone from series 1

MarilynBoo · 07/02/2024 17:04

Fiona Shaw's dead partner, Travis, is the father of MMs character in season 1.

diddl · 07/02/2024 17:05

Oh thank you-I'd missed that about the Travis character.

TheVeryThing · 07/02/2024 17:15

I'm finding this strangely compelling even though I'm not always sure what is going on. I'm so fascinated by the landscape and the idea of weeks of total darkness.
I do have to point out that Fiona Shaw and Dervla Kirwan are Irish, not British.
I wonder why they have used so many non-American actors, though.

tennissquare · 07/02/2024 17:28

@TheVeryThing @FrostyFogg , it's thought that because the show was filmed in Iceland they used some UK actors.

FrostyFogg · 07/02/2024 18:42

Thanks @tennissquare

Also @TheVeryThing for pointing that out.

Joining as I’m watching - life wtf is going on. Giving me ring and grudge vibes. JF is very cool though.

I haven’t watched season 1, is it good? Less like a horror film?

Yes it's very good, personally think it is the best series, but gritty and dark - thriller dealing with child murders. Series 4 is definitely the most 'woo'.

Don't know if anyone has seen but episode 5 is going to be available on from 2am on Saturday, wish it wasn't coming to an end absolutely love it

MrsCatE · 09/02/2024 14:16

I JUST started watching Series 1 and straight off the victim has a spiral tattoo on her back! Also, the intro has a lot of similarities from the music genre, industry and drownings let alone Elks.

MariaVT65 · 10/02/2024 03:57

I quite enjoyed episode 5!

thursdaygrumbles · 10/02/2024 10:29

What an episode

vincettenoir · 10/02/2024 11:30

I'm enjoying it. Loving the feel of the atmosphere with it set in the arctic circle. JF playing a character pretty different to ones I've seen her play before and the acting is really good all round.

There are some supernatural elements to it which I don't usually like. I can just about get on board with it atm but don't want it to get any more supernatural.

I feel exactly the same re the supernatural elements.

For my crime dramas I prefer gritty realism.

But, as you say, there’s not too much supernatural at the moment.

whiteshutters · 10/02/2024 16:45

I guess they are referring to the locals' traditions and beliefs.

vincettenoir · 10/02/2024 17:15

Yes @whiteshutters I guess that’s why it works. I like the visions and dreams. But I would be disappointed if the explanations at the end were supernatural.

whiteshutters · 10/02/2024 17:21

Yes there has to be more than that.

GingerRuby · 10/02/2024 20:34

Oh man, episode 5 was brilliant, don't want to post spoilers but really want to talk about it!

sorestupid · 10/02/2024 22:50

Going to watch in now, I've been disappointed so far.. Jodie is the thing keeping me watching, I feel the deaths are in the background.

sorestupid · 10/02/2024 22:52

Will I need to sleep with the lights on?!

AnImaginaryCat · 10/02/2024 23:24

Just watched episode 5.

😮
