I can't see another thread about this programme starting Jodie Foster, Kali Rees and Fiona Shaw.

From IMBd
"In Ennis, Alaska, the men that operate a research station vanish. To solve the case, Detectives Danvers and Navarro will have to confront the darkness themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice."

I watched the first episode yesterday and I really liked it.

I read a lot of books about, and set in, Alaska so I was disposed to like it.
It was good to be cwtched up under a blanket watching the story unfold in the icy Arctic darkness.

Has anyone else seen it, and what do you think.

PS I love Jodie Foster and Fiona Shaw! I met FS many years ago and stammered some incoherent appreciation. I still blush when I think of it. ☺️

Thanks (again). I thought I was paying attention, but it just seems like lots of interviews and pondering

milesmachine · 29/01/2024 21:54

It is confusing but starting to piece it together and the introduction of the oil protests added a new angle to it all

But the hospitalised man at the end was proper freaky

It's super annoying as sky don't do subtitles on UHD programs and with kids in bed I keep having to toggle the volume up and down to hear the conversations!

LunaNorth · 29/01/2024 21:59

I found it a bit hard to believe that Jodie Foster’s character wouldn’t have known what death by hypothermia would look like.

I’ve given up now. Scrolled my phone for an hour because I was bored, had no idea what was going on, couldn’t find anyone to root for, and the whole thing just got on my wick.

Thedrownedprophet · 29/01/2024 22:38

I'm loving it. Starting to see patterns too. Three times that Beatle song has featured. At Tsala, Navarro heard it out on the ice and Wheeler was whistling it.

Also the little one eyed polar bear keeps showing up.

Navarro being told to listen.

burnoutbabe · 05/02/2024 19:16

Another slow one.

Least no foster /eccle shag this time!

Oh interesting. I have noticed the one eyed polar bear (In episode 4 too) but hadn't noticed the Beatles song.

Only other pattern I got was Fiona Shaw's dead partner is the father of whatshisnane from series 1.(I didn't spot it btw - I'm too rubbish with names!!)

MrsCatE · 06/02/2024 00:41

I will persevere because think Jodie Foster is incredible. However, getting very peeved by the is it supernatural or more likely to do with Mine and everyone is going doolally because of the contaminated water. Obviously, one eyed (other eye has been treated as in sewn up) Polar Bear, Toy and bloody 'Twist and Shout' are clues; why did Danvers have such a visceral reaction to it when she first entered the Research Station. I've counted it being played 5 times now, including end credits of last episode. I do like most of the song covers!

Supersimkin2 · 06/02/2024 00:58

My volume button’s gone flat with overuse.

The NYT refers to the victims as the corpsicle.

mondaytosunday · 06/02/2024 01:33

Sound doesn't bother me - the screaming from the phone went on forever though!
I was a bit shocked by Eccleston's appearance - he looks older than 59. His American accent seems fine to me (I have one myself). Jodie has morphed in to my sister - uncanny! She plays such an unlikeable character but still seems to have slept with most of the male population!
It's a weird one and you have to pay attention (not be scrolling through MN)!
I enjoyed the first series but gave up on series two, and started this one because of Jodie.
It was filmed over the winter in Iceland - they wanted to make it authentically very very cold and dark! Couldn't live there myself, as much as I love snow.
If you've ever watched Life Below Zero some of the native Alaskans have those chin tattoos - first line when a woman gets her period, then I think another after becoming a mother and so on.
Loved Fortitude but not towards the end.

Mothership4two · 06/02/2024 04:47

I'm hoping with the final two episodes it's going to start to come together. At the moment seems a bit of a sprawling mess. Definite threads - one eyed polar bear and toy one, Beatle's song, spirals, "I see dead people" and that blooming orange. Other bits I'm not sure are relevant at all, like Priors crappy marriage or his dad's (scam) relationship or Danvers and Navarro wanting FWB and nothing deeper.

I got major series 1 vibes from "you're in the night country now". Reminded of Reggie la Doux "you're in Carcosa now"

Loads of parallels.

whiteshutters · 06/02/2024 17:57

It's mental but I am hooked.

Rollergirl11 · 06/02/2024 20:34

I think it’s absolutely awful. I’m bored as hell watching it and wouldn’t care if I didn’t finish it.

I'm completely obsessed with it. I keep thinking about it.

thursdaygrumbles · 06/02/2024 21:32

We’ve just watched the 4th episode, it’s the first thing we’ve watched in years where I genuinely have no idea what will happen next. I kind of love it

Quarvvo - mmmm is he involved? Did he take the stone from Evangeline?

Prior Snr - what’s his role? It can’t just be sad jilted lonely man?

Travis’s wife (sorry can’t remember her name - she definitely knows something

Danvers - was that her sons teddy? And why does Navarro keeps seeing it?

in Navarro’s visions, why are they all pointing at her? Do you think she killed her mum?

1975wasthebest · 06/02/2024 21:48

I find the central story so unengaging but I may as well stick with it as there's only two more episodes to go and Jodie Foster is fantastic.

Lottapianos · 06/02/2024 21:54

It's really got under my skin, I love it. I agree that the plot is messy but Jodie Foster is so brilliant and it's really atmospheric. Danvers is not a likeable character but she is very entertaining. Would like more Fiona Shaw please, she's wasted so far. And Dervla Kirwan! Haven't seen her on telly in years

MrsCatE · 07/02/2024 01:24

I'd forgotten about the oranges! Is the spiral the Milky Way (very far reach)! I'm trying to get clues from Mine Company name plus research station . . . I'm convinced has to do with Mine contamination of water. Tagak (sp) left the spiral stone as a clue. Don't mean to be facetious but the town appears to have at least a couple of mental health facilities to cover a small population; Navarro lets her sister sign into the clinic with an assurance 'it's not like the other place'. I will continue to watch because Jodie Foster is brilliant, loads of random Brit actors popping up and I like Navarro's piercings!

FrostyFogg · 07/02/2024 10:16

I'm enjoying it. We jumped from series one which was amazing, to this one. I squeaked a couple of times and hid behind a cushion last night. And not just at the sex scenes! No idea what's going on half the time, but it's still compelling. And also very moving with Julia's story line. I'm loving Fiona Shaw in it as well!

milesmachine · 07/02/2024 10:22

I'm also gripped by it. So different to the other series with the spiritual side.

I too wonder about contaminated water (I remember Danvers went to pay condolences to the mother of the still board and the water was grey).

Frustratingly my DH keeps talking to me through it and it's the sort of thing you have to really pay attention to.

The last episode when she was drunk, she was looking at two videos and kept rewinding and rewatching a bit of it. Then seemed to realise something.

What was it she realised? Bloody DH wittering in my ear about some 90s Jodie foster film 😆

BaconAndAvocado · 07/02/2024 11:53

Loving the series.

The young actor who plays Jodie Foster's protogée is actually British from Hackney!

And Christopher Eccleston, Dervla Kieran and Fiona Shaw to boot!

Mothership4two · 07/02/2024 12:24

@milesmachine

The last episode when she was drunk, she was looking at two videos and kept rewinding and rewatching a bit of it. Then seemed to realise something.

She heard a noise that sounded like power being shut off in both the Annie video and the one from the Tsalal ice station. So they know someone was going to the effort of feeding power and light to the ice cave, where Annie probably died, for some reason.

WinterDeWinter · 07/02/2024 12:50

I'm also gripped. Jody Foster is just phenomenal - again. To me she represents what women could be like if we didn't have to perform gender - so yes, maybe 'unlikeable' sometimes, but mainly because she's not conformed to the order to Be Kind, like most of us do in the end. I literally can't take my eyes off her when she's on screen, it's all there in every line and expression and wrinkle. She's like a lodestar.

I think the real polar bear with one eye was seen very early in the series and again yesterday, wasn't it? Navarro definitely thinks that the soft toy is proof that the dead are with us, which is why Danvers got angry and threw it out.

I think the poisoned water is turning them all slowly mad, like mercury poisoning. Different people affected at different rates - Navarro's mother perhaps one of the first? But perhaps though the mine company's corner cutting is causing the leak into the water, the cause of the poison itself is something more woo-y, maybe to do with ancestral land.

I love Navarro's piercings too, and the chin tattoos even though I'm not usually into either. I am very middle aged and well beyond the desire or ability to look 'lovely' and if it weren't a total appropriation I would be seriously considering the chin tattoos myself! They are so minimal and strong and compelling.

Can you see a theme here ? Grin

milesmachine · 07/02/2024 13:03

@Mothership4two thank you 😊

That makes sense now why they followed up on the man they'd visited the previous day (can't remember his name!!)
