True Detective: Night Story S4

I can't see another thread about this programme starting Jodie Foster, Kali Rees and Fiona Shaw.

From IMBd
"In Ennis, Alaska, the men that operate a research station vanish. To solve the case, Detectives Danvers and Navarro will have to confront the darkness themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice."

I watched the first episode yesterday and I really liked it.

I read a lot of books about, and set in, Alaska so I was disposed to like it.
It was good to be cwtched up under a blanket watching the story unfold in the icy Arctic darkness.

Has anyone else seen it, and what do you think.

PS I love Jodie Foster and Fiona Shaw! I met FS many years ago and stammered some incoherent appreciation. I still blush when I think of it. ☺️

I've not watched any yet but I love Jodie Foster so might this season. Is it a different storyline each season so would I need to watch the previous episodes?

1975wasthebest · 16/01/2024 13:38

I thoroughly enjoyed it, but what a shame it's dropping weekly! I renewed my Now TV membership yesterday just to watch this. Jodie Foster is - predictably - formidable and the atmosphere created is amazing.

No, you don't need to watch the previous episodes @ElinorDashwood68 It's a completely new story and with new characters.

gaggiagirl · 16/01/2024 13:38

Each season stands alone so no need to watch any other season of true detective, although I recommend you do only because they are so good!

Zingy123 · 16/01/2024 18:53

The sound quality is abysmal. Added to that the mumbling it's hard to watch.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 16/01/2024 19:27

Yes, found it quite mumbly in places, had to turn volume up. Love Jodie Foster though - great to see her in something like this.

SquashPenguin · 16/01/2024 19:28

It was great, can’t wait for next weeks. Wish I could just binge the lot in one go!

burnoutbabe · 16/01/2024 19:53

I was gutted there was no 2sm showing this week but it dropped onto sky around 4pm.

So spoilers will be there anytime Mondays onwards.

I enjoyed. Was slow and didn't quite recognise Fiona shaw as I assumed it was a native woman.

Be interesting how Jodie and "her daughter" are connected? I guess neice rather than step child (as I assume she won't be playing a straight woman but maybe she is happy to)

PuzzlingRecluse · 16/01/2024 19:57

Really enjoyed it last night GUTTED to have to wait until next week as was in the mood to watch again tonight. It’s like going back a decade 😂

love Jodie foster in it - off to look for other seasons now

Rollergirl11 · 16/01/2024 21:03

DH and I watched last night. Was giving me major Fortitude vibes. Does it have a supernatural element to it?

Mountainclimber2024 · 16/01/2024 21:04

Jodie Foster is so good at acting. It was excellent I’m already hooked. The characters are so real too.

Me too. Lots of supernatural element. I read the Guardian blog, and she clearly saw more than one episode.

I agree the sound is terrible.

Nevertheless we liked it so far.

GingerRuby · 16/01/2024 22:45

Yes, I also got the Fortitude vibes, from the trailer , looks like Christopher Eccleston is in this too!

I really enjoyed it, thought was really atmospheric, so well acted and am looking forward to episode 2. Jodie Foster is amazing! The girl is her stepdaughter not niece, think that was confirmed in the Guardian review.

SadCelticBunny · 16/01/2024 22:50

Oh sorry I haven't been back, I was busy earlier...(Looking at photos of my friend's rescue dog), walking the dog and making supper.

I am glad everyone is liking it!
I love noir dramas and Alaska so all good for me.

I am rather deaf and have subtitles on so hadn't realised that there were sound issues.

Really looking forward to next week's episode.

I am watching the Morning Show, missed it completely and liking that too.

So glad I found this thread, I loved it such a good first episode and like others reminded me of Fortitude, very dark sinister and creepy atmosphere, love Jodie Foster as well, can't wait for the next episode

hellsBells246 · 17/01/2024 13:21

I had to keep turning the sound up and down. Found it hard to hear all the dialogue for all the mumbling. Bloody annoying.

I love Jodie Foster and I like her character in this, but I was disappointed.

Are we really supposed to believe that a mythical creature killed all the men? What scared the reindeer at the start?

All the other characters are weird or flawed. I don't know if I'll watch another.

whiteshutters · 17/01/2024 21:20

OMG I loved this - creepy or what! I can't wait a week!

SadCelticBunny · 17/01/2024 22:42

Great review in the Guardian

Really want to watch this but started watching series 1 (I know not necessary).

A question to those who have seen it - should I persevere?! It's very grim but the two main characters are so compelling (and the acting so good - esp Matthew McC) - and for that reason we have stuck with it. But we have got stuck after episode 4 (the one which results in MMc going undercover & the shoot out at the dealers house) just had me behind the sofa with the stress of it all and now we are thinking of bailing. I know this is a decision for me and DP but any reflections from those who remember series 1 welcome!!

Rollergirl11 · 18/01/2024 08:14

@WobblyLondoner We liked Series 1 the most and if you were going to watch any of the 3 that would be the one to go for. The other 2 can’t compete. I do remember it being very stressful viewing as you say. I seem to remember one of the last episodes being particularly poignant so I would stick with it!

Heres a funny parody of Matthew Mcconaughey from the Oscar’s that I thought was hilarious at the time!! 😂

Just watched ep1.

Very creepy-very Fortitude!

1975wasthebest · 21/01/2024 21:04

It’s so frustrating when they drop episodes weekly rather than in one go. I guess it's all about money - more people can subscribe for more than one month (there’s six episodes).

capabilityfrowns · 21/01/2024 21:07

Enjoying this - loved s1 and developed the biggest crush ever on Matthew mcconaughy......

Couldn't get into s2 or 3 at all

@SadCelticBunny how did you get subtitles? Dh and I were looking for ages We’re on a Panasonic smart tv, not sure it makes any difference!

I quite like it - it reminds me what tv used to be like, makes you look forward to each Monday night
