Gladiators returns!

On Saturday! Anyone else going to watch?

Sorry if there's already a thread please feel free to merge

I grew up watching it in the 90s on a Saturday night. I didn't see the sky(?) remake as I don't think we had sky at the time, however this time it looks like they are keeping some of the original events

My favourites used to be Lightning and Wolf. I also used to want to be on it and do the eliminator. No chance of my lardy self making it round it now!

Apollo is also very nice to look at

That's good to know @CaramelMac - he annoys me but if he's doing the job of baddie for little kids to enjoy, then I can tolerate him!

Like others have commented I thought Wes looked more like 50 than 35!!
If he was older surely it would be better to be honest and be a champion of older contestants?!
I'm sure in the 1990s thay played for a cash prize - I distincly remember how John Fashnu said '10 THOUSAND pounds!' And a jeep came into it somewhere.
So I was a bit underwhelmed that they just got a trophy and the kudos of winning last night! Although it did make me feel slightly better for the runners up!

I'm sure in the 1990s thay played for a cash prize - I distincly remember how John Fashnu said '10 THOUSAND pounds!' And a jeep came into it somewhere.
So I was a bit underwhelmed that they just got a trophy and the kudos of winning last night! Although it did make me feel slightly better for the runners up!

I think I was the instigator of the Wes age observation after I saw him at a friend's birthday do when we all went to the wrestling..(Highly recommend)..We saw Wes appear there and we had ringside seats so we all saw him from close range, literally yards away at some moments. After he appeared on the show announced as a 30 something we were all surprised and obviously phoned each other afterwards! If he isn't 50 he's not far short of it. In the same age bracket myself, no idea why he/they thought it pertinent to say he was in his thirties!! And yep. I'd want a good payment even for one event! Crazy there was no prize money given our extortionate licence fees! lol :)

@GemmaC50 it was probably just a mistake, one of my colleagues was on a TV game show once and they got the town he was from wrong, I assume the people putting the information together just make mistakes sometimes and no one double checks/bothers to correct them

No. I think the standard wasn't particularly great, and there wasn't anyone who really stood out as a truly outstanding athlete.

I read that Marie-Louise also wanted to be a Gladiator.
I'm not sure it would really work as I feel like theyre different roles like rugby positions where you have the really heavy players in the scrum/ defence(Gladiators) and the smaller nippier players that do the running (condenders) . Sorry I dont know the correct terms! Or in simpler terms hunter and prey.
The only time where theyre really doing the same thing is Duel. I think the women are probably more evenly matched but the male gladiators are in a completely different league to the contestants , however fit they are.

Definitely a NO from me. Whilst I applaud his achievement in the show, he's certainly NOT a gladiator... I mean, let's be honest. The major or a major attraction of thjs show for most of us on this forum is seeing the Gladiators themselves.. Okay, dare I say it..okay..''the men!" lol :). A gladiator should appear as a gladiator.. Male glads should always be massive muscle men and not the smaller athletic types like Finlay..I mean..who would we prefer to see in a shiny lycra gladiator cozzie..The likes of Bionic, Giant and Nitro... Or Finlay? I think I've answered that question! lol :)

I was trying to convey something similar. I haven't a clue about rugby positions but you put it over well! A good point well made @Noseylittlemoo

Yes and the runner up won a holiday to somewhere I could never understand! Sounded like the corros islands or something.

i also remember one Irish winner had to sell the car as they couldn’t get it home.

It would be hugely unfair if, in a new series, one contenders did duel against bionic...and the other got Finlay!

Agree with you there.. I think there's a huge disparity as it is which is unfair..I mean one guy has to go up against a 6'06" muscle mountain like Bionic or Giant whilst the other gets Viper. .Hardly fair! Yep and that would also be the case were it Finlay! No way he's going to fill one of those shiny lycra cozzies as spectacularly as Bionic,Giant, Phantom etc lol :) 😍

I always loved the Pyramid event.. Hoping it does find it's way back in some form or another..Personally I prefer these more physical events, duel, powerball, pyramid etc than those like The Wall etc,and that cross the bridge one(name escapes me).. After all it's called "Gladiators " So that's exactly what it should be! The Sky glads series' had an event which was basically a wrestling contest on a high platform. Of course the glads always won but some of them were really exciting epics! I used to like Gauntlet in it's old form. .Has been awful in the new series tbf. An opinion shared with practically everyone! lol :)

Nah definitely not. He did well on the show, but he hasn't got the charisma to be a Gladiator.
He always looked terrified every time he spoke on camera!

Totally agree.. With that said it would really affect the show negatively if the glads appeared as more average Joes imo. I think I'm speaking for many by stating that Gladiators should look like gladiators. If we start seeing contender types trying to fill those rather fetching cozzies in place of our fave muscle mountains, that would be awful imo! I'm sure many on this thread including myself would rapidly lose interest! No, we need to keep the giant hunks as glads imo :)
