Telly addicts

Silent Witness - news series for 2024 starts tonight - what will our multi tasking pathologists get up to this time.

I know fron the last series that many think this is a series that should have quietly been taken of air years ago.

But the telly addicts thread last time was so funny that it made it worth watching just to be able to join in the comments.

As our two lead characters have zero chemistry and barely speak, and they rarely do any actual pathology, one can only speculate what even more far fetched adventure they will get up to this series.

Not forgetting each more implausible fashion get up Nikki will be wearing to work each episode.

It was when Jack suggested a holiday last night. He's suggested that at least once before. We all know she's not going take two weeks off work and go anywhere with him

Didn’t she get kidnapped when she last took one?

Silent Witness went downhill when Amanda Burton left the series.

I have all the Amanda Burton seasons on DVD.
Nikki has great hair though.

I haven’t watched this since Trevor Eve?” (if it’s the same programme)? I quite enjoyed it - easy watching!

I think that was Waking the Dead

Witless Silence in our house!

So ridiculously far fetched, but still have to watch it 😂

hattie43 · 10/01/2024 00:18

I was so looking forward to the new series but I found it all a bit too jaded and samey now . It's had its time I think .

IwantToRetire · 10/01/2024 00:58

I watched both episodes last night and restrained myself from spoilers (I think)!

But something about how the character was played or filmed it seemed really obvious that the sone was more than a little bit dodgy.

But have to confess I didn't guess the original murderer being incarcerated in a cellar for how many years it was.

Did Peck expect Nikki to not help herself being nosy and so he lingered on going to the basement area so that she would follow.

He sort of implied he knew his alzheimer's would mean he couldn't continue having him locked up.

In terms of how realistic any of the plot was, are some people with alzheimer's able to live indepently by using hundreds of post it notes?

And much as I dont want to see it anything more graphic (yuk), it seems Jack and Nikki can only make contact with some passing pat. And the best they could do at the end was touch noses.

Maybe they both have it in their contracts not to have to do anything more intimate!

Nikki's so good at losing boyfriends cant she just lose Jack, please?

Is it time for my annual “I miss Harry” post?

John Hannah was morphing into James Nesbitt in this one. I often get them mixed up anyway, even when they didn’t look particularly alike, but this time I had no chance of identifying which one of them it was.

LittleMonks11 · 10/01/2024 08:41

Wasn't Nicky's last holiday to Afghanistan and she ended up being buried alive? I suggest Cornwall for Jack's proposed mini break.

Jack is looking more and more like Popeye every series. He's huge. I do like him though.

When Jack does the imagined forensic scenes it really does come across as the poor man's Grissom era CSI.

And yet, still I watch.

It must be Nicky's hair and outfits interspersed with some decent plotting.

Mairzydotes · 10/01/2024 09:20

The plot with in the last 5 minutes was more interesting than the whole episode. The celler thing was huge wasn't it? I thought it was odd he was feeding a dog, as there was no sign of him having one, but I didn't guess.

Decafflatteplease · 10/01/2024 11:45

I'm confused!

Spoiler alert incase someone hasn't watched it....

What was going on with the son?! Why did he pretend his dad was back? To try to get them to find him? Also how did he manage to strangle himself with his hands tied behind his back?

What's significance of the birds?

Also, the niece lipreading "idiots" I'm deaf and can lipread but she was miles away from the screen and the wrong angle there's no way she'd have gotten that!

Also why didn't they search pecks frankly massive cellar thing for dunn? Was he really there for 20 years? Why didn't peck kill him?

Lastly was it prison that the son was in at the end? He wasn't charged with murders was he as he only watched and was a child? Or did he get imprisoned for the break-in at the sisters?

I'm far too invested in all this obviously!

CharmedCult · 10/01/2024 12:08

Nicky has definitely got the famous Mumsnet “ick” when it comes to Jack.

With regards to the son I imagine he was in prison for what he did to Mason and thumping Velvy and breaking into his sisters house.

burnoutbabe · 10/01/2024 13:33

At the end was the man in cellar killed by injection or was that for John Hannah?

I assumed towards the end jh had killed him but then I remembered him feeding the dog (which I'd put down to be I either missing a dog or he forgot his dog had died)

LittleMonks11 · 10/01/2024 13:46

Suicide as the other one was wheeled off in a stretcher.

No was he'd live for 20 years like that.

John Hammah killed himself. The guy from the cellar was taken away in an ambulance.

Cheers!

I've not watch the show for years but I quite enjoyed.

Nice to have a twisty turny drama, all resolved over 2 nights.

Definitely more chemistry this series - I spotted Jack put his hand on her shoulder at one point 😊Who knows where that might lead...

Anyone care to take odds on one of them dying before the end of the series?

I wondered if "feed the dog" was his code for feeding Dunn, his prisoner? He didn't seem to have an actual dog, and I thought I saw a tin bowl in front of the cell gate. But I could be wrong!

Wishful thinking! I could really do without Jack - he's quite attractive to look at but he is completely without charm or charisma.

As for Nicky and her musings / meanderings - ripples in a pond etc etc., pure daft.

Having said that, I did think it was much better than last series. The poor chap (I know he was a serial killer but still...) in the barn was a pretty good twist.

no, you are correct. He was reminding himself to feed dunn - but we assumed he had just forgotten either his dog had died or we'd just not seen the dog before.

We concluded that his prisoner was being fed the dog food and that John Hannah killed himself, but the injection might originally have been meant for his prisoner

kerstina · 10/01/2024 18:11

Well I really enjoyed these two episodes. Silent Witness doesn’t always get my full attention but these did. I worked out some of the plot correctly too.

Xmasbaby11 · 10/01/2024 23:45

I really enjoyed this- much better than the last series! I didn’t see the twist until close to the end and thought it worked well.

I agree about the lack of chemistry with Jack and Nikki despite liking both their characters !
