Will have spoilers below!

Have loved GA since it was first broadcast although don't think it's anywhere near as good as it used to be, so have been re-watching since the start.

I now can pinpoint its demise - season 6!

Starts with George's funeral, then the merger with the horrible people from Mercy West, Izzy leaving, the Chief drinking, Teddy arriving and all the angst with the Owen & Teddy! Too much change and too many new characters in a short period!

Before this, it was practically perfect & then season 6 onward is downhill all the way (with a few amazing bursts - the shooting episode; the musical episode - can't remember others right now but no doubt there will have been a few more to keep me watching).

Anyone else agree or think otherwise?

I do agree that lots of these storylines are ridiculous but it is such a long running show there are loads of great storylines too. Also even though it goes off the rails occasionally it is still one of my favourite tv shows, perhaps my favourite.

Some of my favourite storylines

The early episodes where they all seem to live at Meredith’s house and dance lots.
when Callie is living in the hospital and Webber finds her dancing in her underwear.
Christina making friends with the older doctor and him picking her up when her car is buried under snow.
When Kepner brings the man trapped in the car to the hospital on a tow truck.
I have to say as it goes on it is harder to find such gems.

I thought they did Bailey’s OCD storyline very well, that was a later season highlight. And actually I enjoyed De Luca’s storyline a lot too, some great moments in that.

I love Christina and the old man. So cute. And I felt like it was great character development for Christina too.

And I thought the whole Samuel storyline was so sad. And Sarah Drew did an amazing job.

I've just watched the season 14 episode where Bailey & Warren have 'the talk' with Tucker. Heartbreaking, just heartbreaking and so scary that that's the reality for so many.

That was really, really well done.

It was.

I dislike Maggie even more this time around.

I dislike Maggie even more this time around.

i hated the Maggie introduction.

she was so affronted that Richard and Meredith, who had no idea that she existed, took more than ten seconds to accept her as True Family.

I did love the storyline with her mum, though. The denial, fighting so hard and then finally accepting.

whosaidtha · 22/02/2024 21:56

I think I just find her unconvincing. She seems full of contradictions and I don't care about any of her story lines. Like I don't like hunt but some of his story lines are good. But Maggie is just weird. Sometimes she's super professional, child prodigy and the next minute she's whining and bitching in the or. Or being both wacky and uptight at the same time.

GildedAge · 22/02/2024 22:29

I think that is maggie though isn’t it, brilliant academically but socially awkward as she didn’t have the normal school experience. Callie says in an early episode they are all a bit like that, as they spent their teens working to get into medical school and now spend all their time working.

DefinitelyMaryBerry · 22/02/2024 23:07

I've made it to season 20. I am very annoyed that Owen Hunt appears to still be here.

DefinitelyMaryBerry · 23/02/2024 08:27

That should be season 19, I've not gained sneak previews to the new season. The fast forwarding they do between seasons is sometimes really effective and sometimes I just get grumpy about it. This time I was grumpy because they don't explain properly what's happened in the gap AND it's an annoying Station 19 crossover.

SheilaFentiman · 23/02/2024 09:49

i Like the s19 interns. I think it’s the first time since MAGIC that they have properly fleshed out a whole group rather than one or two people.

DefinitelyMaryBerry · 23/02/2024 11:10

They do seem great. I think having new interns to focus on will really help. it did feel like a breath of fresh air having new faces and hospital storylines again.

I hate hate HATE the S19 crossovers, when I'm doing a re watch, the last thing I want to do is research which flaming S19 episode I need to watch to have a clue whats happening!!

Fucking hate it

theconfidenceofwho · 23/02/2024 14:03

Me too re S19 @CallieTorres

It's worse when you do watch station 19 and you know what's happened in advance because you know Ben and Miranda are looking after Pru and a baby has just been born called Pru.

I’m on my third rewatch.

had forgotten how jarring the very strange cover version songs through season 10 are!

spend more time trying to figure out what the original song is than watching the program!

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 01/03/2024 06:47

Season 20 is coming out in the UK on March 28th! So only 2 weeks behind America.

whosaidtha · 01/03/2024 06:59

I know there's lots of gory and upsetting things that happen but I actually had to leave the room when the man was going to get out of the broken lift.

I've not been able to watch the "kid in concrete" and I think there's another one or two I cannot watch

DefinitelyMaryBerry · 01/03/2024 20:46

I am really enjoying season 19 a lot more than the last couple. The interns are lovely, and all living together in Meredith’s house like when MAGIC was a thing. Teddy and Owen remain annoying, but Addison appearing makes up for it. I know they’re going heavy on the abortion storyline but I really think they had to. It was such a huge thing to happen and they’ve got the platform.

Yes. I think the one thing I took away from watching the whole thing is that all of the characters are deeply flawed people. The show is based around the fact that they are imperfect and struggle with various elements of themselves, their personalities and their backgrounds.

I actually rarely find a programme where I don't loathe some of the characters. With GA, I found I liked more of them than I expected. Especially as their stories unfolded. You could see why and how they were fucked up.

That said, while a lot of it works very well and there are some great storylines, some of it is just bloody bonkers. I also wish the wealth aspect wasn't so widespread and such a focus throughout.

SheilaFentiman · 01/03/2024 21:13

@RainbowZebraWarrior in what way, the wealth aspect? Health insurance cover?

RainbowZebraWarrior · 01/03/2024 21:48

Just the fact that it revolves around huge money. Buying the hospital (although I get the storyline) but it centres around a lot of the characters wealth / inherited fortune etc. It has its place at times, and shows how it can be the downfall of some of the characters, but it almost seems like movie star wealth.

ETA: not the health insurance aspect - I love the storylines where surgery / treatment is carried out pro bono. Although I don't know how true or common this is in the US.
