Will have spoilers below!

Have loved GA since it was first broadcast although don't think it's anywhere near as good as it used to be, so have been re-watching since the start.

I now can pinpoint its demise - season 6!

Starts with George's funeral, then the merger with the horrible people from Mercy West, Izzy leaving, the Chief drinking, Teddy arriving and all the angst with the Owen & Teddy! Too much change and too many new characters in a short period!

Before this, it was practically perfect & then season 6 onward is downhill all the way (with a few amazing bursts - the shooting episode; the musical episode - can't remember others right now but no doubt there will have been a few more to keep me watching).

Anyone else agree or think otherwise?

I bloody love greys anatomy! I rewatched from the beginning just before the penultimate series came out. I think you're too early for the demise. I am sure I enjoyed at least 13/14 seasons before I was a bit hmmm. Still enjoyed all the others too but less so with each series.

Have you watched the spin offs? I'm currently watching station 19. I wasn't sure at first but I'm hooked now - it took the whole first season pretty much.

I'll do some investigation as to when I think it went downhill and come back with my findings.

theconfidenceofwho · 05/01/2024 15:15

Please do as I've no one to talk about this in real life Grin

Maybe I am too soon - will keep re-watching through as I'm only part way through season 6.

I loved Addison's spin off but got annoyed with Station 19 as felt like they were forcing you to watch it otherwise you actually missed huge chunks of GA storyline & I didn't like feeling forced.

I just hated Maggie, the Teddy & Owen angst, Amelia and her partner and lots more!

Have recently started my second re-watch.

This time round, I'm really struggling to like Derek - at all!!

JustanotherMNSlapperTwat · 05/01/2024 15:19

For me the demise is when Yang leaves. She's such an ambitious driven character and leaves such a void.

And then the second killer for me is when Owen and Teddy turned from being these incredible surgeons and war hero's to pathetic whiny people who are just irritating

That's said I found all the parts of the last season around the impact of Roe vs Wade being overturned incredibly emotional and I was glad I had persevered through to that season

I was the same. The first time around I got caught up in the drama of it all, the second time around I just kept wondering why I was ever rooting for him as a character when he's so unlikeable

theconfidenceofwho · 05/01/2024 15:22

@flipent That made me think of the 'He's not the sun, you're the sun' episode which I've not gotten to again yet and which is another amazing one but I can't remember what led to that!

He did annoy me for the first couple of seasons but I'm liking him currently! Had totally forgotten that Lexi was in love with George and had shagged Alex!

I’m on S15 on my second rewatch. I think you’re too early with the demise. It was after Derek died in my opinion. Though seriously downhill after Christina left. I had a much greater appreciation for Mark, Callie and Arizona this time around and April in the later seasons.

If at all possible, I loved Christina more on the rewatch. I haven’t got to Alex leaving yet but it’s next season and I can’t get over how badly he was written off, I know the actor left suddenly but all the character development was undone in 3 letters!

Itsmychristmasdress · 05/01/2024 15:22

Watching too.
Derek is bloody awful. Totally narcissistic.
I'm on season 8. Hate that they killed Mark and lexi off.
Yang and Owen make me puke.

True actually.

I haven't watched the last season yet as couldn't bring myself to but had planned to once I got through this re-watch in advance of the new season.

agreed about quality starting to go down when many new faces appear at once, but without the story lines to match; so season 6 is about right

Yes! It would have been better if they killed him off. It was so unbelievable for his character at that point

Although I did wonder if they didn't kill him off because then Jo would have been competition for Merediths sad, lonely but sexy widow that all the male doctors want to shag title

Yes, that makes sense and I completely agree. Though perhaps they could have still had her fall into Link’s arms 3 seasons later regardless.

There must have been something else they could have done. It’s not helped by the fact I can’t stand Izzy so him running off to be with her made the storyline even harder to swallow but the whole thing was ridiculous.

I didn't like Izzy too so I agree, plus Jo was a far better partner for him

It's not even just him leaving Jo, it's him leaving Meredith and the kids when he was such a big part of Zola's life in particular that I just find unrealistic

theconfidenceofwho · 05/01/2024 15:45

I agree - it really bothered me at the time and no doubt will annoy me even more on 2nd viewing! It is a pity that the actor chose to leave so suddenly though, especially given his longevity in the show, as a proper story befitting Karev leaving would have been great!

Although not another George - 007 nearly killed me!

OP posts:
burnoutbabe · 05/01/2024 15:53

i think though killing him off would have made Jo have to act the widow for a while. Meaning her charachter misses out on lots of potential shagging events/stories.

So for the actress, its best he leaves her and she can be mad and move on quickly.

I LOVED private practice and re-watched that recently - on Disney - very fun.

Greys has actually returned to form in the most recent season that was on Disney last year - 5 new interns, all have various interesting stories - HELM is back, ADDISON is back. overall i quite enjoyed it compared to past seasons (but then those seasons had covid restrictions - and whilst THE BEACH was silly - it was nice to see some people again)

I know, he really only needed to come back for 2-3 episodes of the next season to get a strong enough arc to get rid of him

mynewusername2023 · 05/01/2024 16:10

I'm on season 10 of my second rewatch (only started in November!)

Yang hasn't left yet so waiting to see if that is the point of demise but suspect it's more around season 14.

Motnight · 05/01/2024 16:20

Haven't watched the last season yet, but am rewatching the series. Love it, but it definitely went downhill after Yang left. I think Hunt is the only character that doesn't change or grow. He starts out as an annoying pillock thinking that all the women he loves need rescuing (they do, from him) and just carries on that way.

Amelia also annoys me.

I thought that Derek and Meredith had a toxic relationship at times, but am enjoying rewatching it.

Miranda is fantastic. Alex becomes a great person, though his exit was terrible.

There's a whole influx of interns whom it is hard to be interested in at all but hopefully this changes in the last season!

blobby10 · 05/01/2024 16:55

Im a GA newbie and have just reached the end of S6 where Derek was shot. Leaving aside the massive plot holes and “how on earth did that happen “ moments and “whom is the poor sod who has to change the sheets in the on call room and how often do they with all the bed hopping “ it’s been great. Having a break for a week or two whimsy catch up in the traitors and reacher ☺️☺️

whosaidtha · 05/01/2024 17:17

I'm On my second re-watch. Up to season 8. I think it goes downhill when yang leaves. And the nail in the coffin when Alex leaves. But I'll still watch the later seasons. Just not as good.

theconfidenceofwho · 05/01/2024 19:53

You guys have got me excited to continue with my re-watch - up to episode 14 of season 6 so still a long way to go!

Like pp i dont like own. Or maggie. I think some characters are just annoying. It became too political. It was light hearted. Then dramarptic with lots of character deaths, business like
I originally liked derek but he wasnt great in his last season. (And phone scene)

whosaidtha · 06/01/2024 16:02

They do get rid of a lot of fan favourites. The only original characters left are Richard and Bailey who weren't main characters is the first season or two.
Owen and teddy are annoying. I have no strong feelings for linc, Amelia or Jo. In fact I don't think there's any characters still in the show that I care about.
I would love them to bring back Stephanie, Arizona, Callie, April, Jackson, Alex or Christina.
I do have hopes for the new interns. But not connected to them yet. Think they spent too much focus on the main girl intern getting married. Didn't have a connection yet to care if she married him or not.

whosaidtha · 06/01/2024 16:06

I also think they need to do more of the exciting case focused episodes. It seems to be all over arching which I think needs to be broken up with exciting surgeries/big accidents etc.
an episode like the one where April got fired. Or the steam boat accident. Not amazing for pushing the main plot or causing long lasting consequences but good to add a bit of the old stuff in.
