Grey's Anatomy rewatch

Will have spoilers below!

Have loved GA since it was first broadcast although don't think it's anywhere near as good as it used to be, so have been re-watching since the start.

I now can pinpoint its demise - season 6!

Starts with George's funeral, then the merger with the horrible people from Mercy West, Izzy leaving, the Chief drinking, Teddy arriving and all the angst with the Owen & Teddy! Too much change and too many new characters in a short period!

Before this, it was practically perfect & then season 6 onward is downhill all the way (with a few amazing bursts - the shooting episode; the musical episode - can't remember others right now but no doubt there will have been a few more to keep me watching).

Anyone else agree or think otherwise?

I think the last series was not bad but I’ll always miss Yang.
I detested Mark at first but fell in love.

I was surprised on rewatch how pleased I was to see April back.

autienotnaughty · 06/01/2024 22:41

I thought it was really good upto around season 12. (Minus the ghost Denny episodes)

After that it started to decline. The new interns never clicked in the same way I still don't like Levi or helm.

But the last series was a big improvement. I really liked the new interns and I think Meredith going is a breath of fresh air

autienotnaughty · 06/01/2024 22:43

Not fussed for private practice but I like s19

JoyOdell123 · 06/01/2024 22:43

Where are you watching?

SemperIdem · 06/01/2024 22:46

I think it started faltering when it killed off Lexi and Mark. Lost it entirely after killing Derek off. The storylines became ridiculous and so aggressively Meredith focused - how many near death experiences can one woman have?!

Private Practice was a great series, Addison was a brilliant, complex character. Probably a good thing that it was cancelled than allowed to limp on as Grey’s has done, easily 10 years past it’s sell by date.

I think it was when that set of interns came in. It became more politicised than an escapist series. It's great that they raise the issues but I just want a bit of easy breezy relaxing watching (well you know, where I sob at every episode)

I'm confused. I thought the last season was the last ever? Apparently we have more on march 14th.

theconfidenceofwho · 07/01/2024 14:44

Maybe I was too quick in thinking season 6 as I'm now part way through season 7 (post-shooting season) & loving it (except for owen & Cristina - wish he'd get far away from her!)

There's definitely a new season as seeing it advertised is what inspired me to go back to the start and re-watch, especially as I didn't watch last season (as couldn't take anymore Owen & Teddy & Amelia's partner to continue but hoping this re-watch helps me!)

It died for me in the last few seasons when it got all preachy. I hate TV shows trying to tell me what to think or feel about issues, even if I agree with their stance.

Rockfordpeach · 07/01/2024 14:58

I'm rewatching it at the moment, I haven't watched the last few seasons at all but love the earlier ones. Currently on season 8 and sad that Mark will be dying soon, he's my favourite. I can't stand Derek, he's a passive aggressive knobhead

For me the demise is when Yang leaves. She's such an ambitious driven character and leaves such a void.

And then the second killer for me is when Owen and Teddy turned from being these incredible surgeons and war hero's to pathetic whiny people who are just irritating

That's said I found all the parts of the last season around the impact of Roe vs Wade being overturned incredibly emotional and I was glad I had persevered through to that season

I agree. The one where they do a termination is so poignant.

BusySittingDown · 07/01/2024 15:15

I really want to rewatch GA but we've just cancelled Disney.

I've watched it twice through though. Once in lockdown (only took me 3 months to get through the whole lot and I was obsessed). I went on and on about it to DH and rewatched it with him. He loved it but gave up after series 17 (which he mostly fast forwarded through while I told him where the good bits were). TBF, series 17 was a bit tedious with all the Covid storyline.

Some of the episodes are annoying if there's a Station 19 crossover. I don't want to watch Station 19!

I loved the original cast with George, Alex and Izzy. I also loved Callie, Arizona, Lexi, Sloane, April and Jackson.

I like a lot of the current characters like Jo and Link and the new interns show promise. The last season seemed to be picking up. They need to have more trauma episodes like the train crash in season 2. That was amazing!

@theconfidenceofwho we are where you are! Agree - Yang's one weakness is the men she goes for. Owen is awful.

TallulahG · 08/01/2024 11:53

I'm also rewatching. I'm on s7 and dreading Mark and Lexie's deaths, I can't cope.

My rewatch has told me 2 things; Bailey is an absolute dick in the early seasons, and Owen is the worst character on the show (second is Izzy)

I remember really liking Izzy. She was one of my faves but on the rewatch she's awful. Not as bad as Owen and teddy but almost.

whosaidtha · 08/01/2024 17:55

And Arizona is really mean to Callie. And I'm not even at the bit where she loses a leg. It's everything.

I agree with this and I suppose as a white person I shouldn’t say it but they raise black issues too much. Yes raise them alongside others but don’t ram them home with a hammer every episode unless you want to lose 90% of your audience.

Booksandwine80 · 08/01/2024 19:18

I agree that you were almost forced to watch station 19 due to lots of story cross overs. Did I dream it or did I read that S19 has been cancelled?

Private Practice would be one of my “comfort rewatches” now.

I think it's at risk of being cancelled but the dice has not yet been rolled. I don't mind it when I have been watching GA but I'm currently on season 4, the pandemic has just hit (and the social distancing is awful.) but because I have already watched GA, I know that miller dies and his baby that's not long been born in S19 will be abandoned in GA.

NewYearNewPyjamas · 08/01/2024 19:41

@GildedAge yeah you probably shouldn't say that.

I do think they raise black issues but I also think they raise very political, American issues. I think we should remember that America is very racist and there have been a lot of racist, police brutality killings in the media recently. For example, the addiction stuff is very American and is overused (to me, a non addict) but I'm glad they're giving so much light to the abortion issue as a woman and imagine black people are glad in the same way. I think they drive it home because Americans are so blind to it. The issue is, the people that needed to see it have probably turned off by now.

It's shondaland though, that's what she does

GildedAge · 08/01/2024 20:03

“The issue is, the people that needed to see it have probably turned off by now.”

This is my point really, if you want to reach a wide audience you need to balance the issues you raise. I love most of Shonda’s writing, it is just the more recent Greys I have this issue with. Absolutely loved the colour blind casting on Bridgerton. That made an important point with ramming it home.

Edit I obviously mean without ramming it home.

I’ve just started season 16 and I know that Alex leaving is coming. I’d forgotten about Jo’s mum and that Jo ended up in a facility for depression. But rewatching it, Alex was completely besotted with Jo, out of his mind with worry etc etc. There’s no way in a handful of episodes later, he’s still in love with Izzy and has been for the last 10 years. It makes me far angrier than it should do.
