Grey's Anatomy rewatch

Will have spoilers below!

Have loved GA since it was first broadcast although don't think it's anywhere near as good as it used to be, so have been re-watching since the start.

I now can pinpoint its demise - season 6!

Starts with George's funeral, then the merger with the horrible people from Mercy West, Izzy leaving, the Chief drinking, Teddy arriving and all the angst with the Owen & Teddy! Too much change and too many new characters in a short period!

Before this, it was practically perfect & then season 6 onward is downhill all the way (with a few amazing bursts - the shooting episode; the musical episode - can't remember others right now but no doubt there will have been a few more to keep me watching).

Anyone else agree or think otherwise?

I didn’t hear that about Preston, what happened.

Isaiah Washington, who played Burke, was fired after an argument with Patrick Dempsey where he referred to TR Knight (who played George) as a f*ggot.

GildedAge · 19/02/2024 13:30

Ah, I didn’t even know he was gay, don’t tend to read the gossip papers. Good job too as I had a massive crush on George and wanted to slap all the girls who brushed him off.

DefinitelyMaryBerry · 19/02/2024 14:33

I have been watching Grey's Anatomy for the first time and it has definitely got harder going as the series marches on. For me it dips from the plane crash and declines from there.

Given how soapy the show is and how ridiculous the storylines, I don't understand why they didn't just recast Karev like they would in any US soap. Nobody recasts anymore! The storyline was stupid.

I hate Owen. I hated Derek and Meredith as a couple, especially him who seemed like a controlling dick to me. I probably would have swooned over him in my 20s but now I want to slap him. Now I hate Meredith. Although at least she dumped the awful voice she used to do that drove me up the wall.

The COVID season was hilarious because their approach to infection control was so sloppy and made me laugh a lot. Those suits they wore that had gaping holes around their necks.

Really all the men are awful for long periods. Toxic relationships everywhere. Owen is definitely the worst but there's times where Jackson gives him a run for his money.

I feel sorry for Katherine Heigl for having to sell that LVAD wire (or whatever it's called) storyline and the ghost sex.

SheilaFentiman · 19/02/2024 14:36

I also don't get the Mark-Lexie swoons... he was far too old for her!

DefinitelyMaryBerry · 19/02/2024 14:40

All the swooning over massively inappropriate relationships due to age/seniority differences!

Its the same with Derek and Meredith tbf

Also I think Burke was supoosed to be a similar age to Derek so he and Christina have a decent age gap too

Its kind of addressed and also not addressed at the same time

SheilaFentiman · 19/02/2024 14:50

Meredith is at least 5 years older than Lexie, given Thatcher and Ellis split up when Meredith was 5. So Mark-Lexie is extra ick.

Meredith bummed around Europe for a bit and Cristina did a PhD, so they were both older than their academic year group.

(Power difference wise, Derek and Preston should have gone nowhere near them, though)

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 19/02/2024 14:50

I don't really have an issue with the age gaps per se, plus Christina has a PHD so clearly has spent quite a while in education so would be older than the others (there's only 8 years between the two actors)

But, I do think it's notable that there aren't any older female younger male relationships (that I can think of).

SheilaFentiman · 19/02/2024 14:51

Bailey is older than Warren, I think? And Meredith is older than DeLuca.

Bailey is only supposed to be 2 or 3 years older than Merediths cohort, a similar age to Callie as they are in the same year, she just acts older I think

And given Warren is a fully experienced anesthetist when they start dating I think it's more likely they are supposed be be portraying a same age relationship

And DeLuca was an EMT first but even so I agree that that feels like an older women younger man portrayal

DefinitelyMaryBerry · 19/02/2024 14:58

There's actually only 4 years difference between Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey, checking their ages. I'd thought it was more. It's still the intern Vs head of department difference that gives me pause though.

Also is there nobody but surgeons in that hospital? Where are all the other doctors? I always compare it to ER where they had a handful of surgeons and then all the ER docs.

DefinitelyMaryBerry · 19/02/2024 15:00

I'm currently really struggling through series 18 because of Teddy and Owen.

PaperDoIIs · 19/02/2024 15:04

There's about a 10 year age gap between Meredith and DeLuca.

With Miranda and Bailey it's harder as he looks younger and he keeps starting over, but they're actually quite close in age.

I think Amelia is older than Link too.

MeMyCatsAndMyBooks · 19/02/2024 15:05

Went downhill from the plane crash, Yang leaving was another knife in and then Alex leaving like that completely out of character killed it off.

whosaidtha · 19/02/2024 11:43

I'm pleased Arizona is back for the new season.

Is she? 😨

DefinitelyMaryBerry · 19/02/2024 15:06

I do like how the doctors keep adopting random abandoned or orphaned babies.

SheilaFentiman · 19/02/2024 15:17

Yeah, I think Andrew was a few years older than the average intern, as Meredith was, but is definitely younger than Meredith when he’s a fourth year and she’s chief of general, or whatever it was. Still, better than the chiefs of cardio/neuro/plastics dating first years!

SheilaFentiman · 19/02/2024 15:20

Amelia is another shaky one on the age. She’s portrayed as younger/more babyish than Meredith as an adult, but in the shooting scene, she’s maybe 6 years younger than Derek? Though there are 3 sisters to squeeze in between the two!

And Derek has gotta be more than 6 years older than Meredith!

Oh yes. And of course Jo gives up her resident pay check and becomes a trainee all over again just as she’s becoming a single mom. Yep, that would happen.

Yeah, Richard (and successors) are called head of surgery, but then also seem to be head of the whole hospital when it comes to things like the merger, the shooting, the plane crash lawsuit and subsequent purchase of the whole hospital etc

Doesn’t Justin Chambers also have 5 or so children? I imagine he thought it might be time to spend more time with them (albeit that doesn’t explain the abrupt exit). The articles I have read about his exit have all been quite low on detail. Seems like some watertight NDAs in play. I was pleased to see him at the golden globes.

His youngest is 22 and his eldest is 30 so I expect they have all moved out. Perhaps it was to spend more time with his wife now the nest is empty

And with her schedule she adopts the first kid that turns up that she FOSTERS!?!?! Why and how would she be able to foster??

I dont like her character - wish she had gone with Alex

I always think the same. Why is it the surgeon running the ER and not an emergency doctor. Why does every trauma have a team of surgeons paged to support instead of doctors? I was brought up on ER the TV show 😂

Rockfordpeach · 19/02/2024 16:15

I'm on the last episode of season 19. Can't believe I've made it all the way through again.

I loved:
Karev
Mark Sloan
Callie
I think Nick is a better partner for Meredith than Derek
Cristina

I hated:
Derek's passive aggression and holier than thou attitude
There never being attendings or senior residents assisting in surgeries, big risky surgeries with just a first year intern in attendance
Amelia although she's more bearable in the later episodes

whosaidtha · 19/02/2024 17:23

April and Jackson was the best relationship. Worst Jackson and Maggie. They had zero chemistry and it came out of nowhere.
