Starting now - BBC1

OP posts:
ipanemagirl · 26/05/2008 09:21

Jessie = wrong
Jodie = wrong
Rachel = competent and could do it
Sam = Star in the making just needs warming up and a bit of vulnerability.

I've got tickets and I don't want to see Jessie or Jodie!

Think the public have other ideas!!!!

But the bbc can't fix it can they? They have to go with the public vote - so Sam ain't gonna win is she unless the Isle of Sam gets dialling!

DrNortherner · 26/05/2008 09:30

Jessie should ahve gone really - she is not Nancy.

Sam - there is no warmth about her at all. ALW may like her but the public don't

Jodie - should win.

The understudy is the mother of a boy who auditioned for Oliver - he didn't get to the final group, but ALW and CM saw his mum singing, and asked her if she would be in the final 12 Nancies. She said no, because she didn't want to leave her kids for that long - so they booked her as understudy. This is according to a report on Digital Spy.

willow · 26/05/2008 10:48

Now here is the real gossip. Apparently the production team are having kittens because the Olivers are all a) growing like sunflowers and many of them will soon be too tall for the role and b) some of their voices are getting to that 'I'm about to break' stage.

glinda · 26/05/2008 11:15

The why didn't they go for the little Olivers?
The audition call has gone out for the other boys in the show (including Dodgers) and the max height is 5 foot. Surely Dodger must be taller than Oliver but I would think that at least 2 of the Olivers must be close to 5 feet now.

ipanemagirl · 26/05/2008 11:24

Sobernow I think you're right, CM and ALW will hate to be delivered someone they don't want, even though they've been happy to milk the programme of all this free publicity! You could see on CM's face exactly HOW MUCH Jodie isn't his Nancy! But they could take on either Jessie or Jodie (whichever wins) and have Sam as Rachel as an understudy I guess.

Everyone keeps saying they couldn't do 8 shows a week but they've been coping with these programmes pretty well haven't they? I mean their voices have largely held out.

But 6 months IS a long tim but I don't know if it's long enough to transform either of the Js enough to make them Nancy. Jessie has appeared to get worse!

tortoiseSHELL · 26/05/2008 11:40

I don't think Jodie could become the sort of Nancy they seem to want - I think they want a 'feisty teenager' as in the book, rather than a 'heaving bosoms, landlady'. Nancy is a YOUNG girl, who is like a SISTER to the boys. Jessie and Samantha I'm sure could be trained to say every word in exactly the way CM wants, even if it's not totally heartfelt. Jodie just isn't what they wanted - it would be right back to 'traditional oompahpah nancy', not breaking any new ground, which I think is what they wanted to do!

I can imagine they are having kittens about the boys - Gwion should be fine though, for opening night...the other two I'm not so sure!

The whole 8 shows a week is a bit unfair I think - no leading pro would do 8 shows a week, they would have a day off!

3andnomore · 26/05/2008 12:28

Well...I must be the only person then who would be happy with Jessie to be Nancy! However, as I have never actually read Oliver Twist and never watched threw a whole movie, I don't really know what kind of character Nacy should be...but in my own mind I wouldn't imagine Nancy to be a well polished girl, if she is an ex street urchin herself, having lived a difficult life on teh streets, etc....so...Jessie would really characterise this...but that is just my opinion....

But on another note....did they change their stylist team this weekend? They all looked dreadful, including Denise van houten...hairwise anyway...

turquoise · 26/05/2008 13:39

Just watched on iplayer - OMG!! I was totally with the panel, either Rachel or Sam could play it, but definitely not either of the galumphers.

I think Rachel deserved to get through on her all round ability, but Sam sang Memory better, and has more star quality.

IMO people didn't vote for Rachel or Sam because they thought they were safe - I thought Jessie was out for sure.

katebee · 26/05/2008 14:18

Really depressed that Rachel has gone, particularly after her great song on Saturday.

Is ALW trying to select a less good candidate for CM so that this show does not compete too much with his own productions?! Or does he want to use Rachel in one of his own productions?! I hope she will be given a leading lady role somewhere.

I don't know who should win now, but hopefully not Sam as she has become too smug.

I also found the choice of Olivers strange..Gwion looks the part but I thought his singing was flat in the group number on Saturday..maybe it was nerves as he sang well on Sunday.

Also sad that the great Latvian pirates didn't win Eurovision!

Never Mind!

MargaretMountford · 26/05/2008 14:22

Latvian pirates should have won, you're right there katebee

3andnomore · 26/05/2008 14:32

lol katebee.....am glad they didn't...but obviously I am clueless....

tortoiseSHELL · 26/05/2008 17:19

I think it's really harsh to describe Sam as smug - I think of all of them she has been the most professional and least 'emotions on her sleeve' at times like when they are told they are safe. She has smiled through everything, and she is ONLY 17!!! NO WAY could I have done what she's done and kept smiling at that age - she's still only a kid! Jodie is exceptionally irritating when told she could still be Nancy - loud sobs into the microphone ad nauseum!

I was sad the Latvian pirates didn't win as well!

MargaretMountford · 26/05/2008 17:20

I like Sam - she is the 'easiest' to watch - very professional..

lazarou · 26/05/2008 17:25

I thought Jonny should have gone through for the olivers.

I hope Jessie doesn't win. Her face is so annoying, she's like a man blundering about the stage. Bill Sykes would not have touched her with a bargepole.

tortoiseSHELL · 26/05/2008 17:28

I have much more of a problem with Jodie than Jessie - I think Jessie's voice more than makes up for any awkwardness tbh!

turquoise · 26/05/2008 17:52

Tortoiseshell I so agree about the drama when Jodie gets through - last night you'd have thought she'd won with all the sobbing and wailing and hugging and gurning.

She really irritates me.

As for Jessie's acting, I wouldn't even want her on my team playing charades. She's shoite!

beansprout · 26/05/2008 19:58

What's the story with Jodie? They keep alluding to difficult experiences in her life - what are they?

tortoiseSHELL · 26/05/2008 20:09

Probably being on THe Biggest Loser...

ipanemagirl · 26/05/2008 23:18

LOL turquoise at "shoite"!!!!

RoxyNotFoxy · 27/05/2008 00:29

What this programme has brought out is how much the needs of the theatre have been made subservient to the needs of reality TV. Oliver might be a musical, but most of it actually consists of acting, not singing. But what acting criteria have the public had access to in order to make an informed choice? Five second snippets of someone saying "Git atta my pub!". All the public votes are for performances of songs, most of which are a million miles from Oliver in style and content. As an audition for a specific role, it's crap. And if Cameron Mackintosh ends up with the wrong Nancy, he'll have no one to blame but himself. He should never have agreed to this farce in the first place.

tortoiseSHELL · 27/05/2008 08:02

Oh, but it's such good advertising! And they end up with possibly 8 people who they can then roll into their shows, and get audience on the back of having 'Rachel' or 'Keisha' or 'Niamh'. I took ds1 to see the touring version of Joseph, and it was a total sell out, because it had 'Keith' and 'Craig'. It's turning 'starting out' actors into 'stars who get bums on seats'.

I think the actual idea that they will get a better Nancy than by having an open audition never entered their heads!

beansprout · 27/05/2008 09:37

Hey, who cares about "better" when there is this much money to be made?!
