Yes it was very clear the CM wasn't happy with Jodie. "You could make a Nancy, yes" - there's damning with faint praise, if ever I heard it. And when asked if he was pleased, "I'm very pleased for Jodie"

What I don't understand is, like the Simona thing, if they didn't want a buxom bargirl type, why did they put Jodie through? Although I must say, I don't know where the Public got this idea of the traditional Nancy. Not from the novel, and not from the film. Very strange.

noddyholder · 02/06/2008 09:41

I don't think nancy would have been like jodie at all she is topo busty barmaid brash and looks too mumsy cameron called her matronly last week which was right. They said at the start of the series they wanted a raw young nancy like the book but they didn't get it.

beansprout · 02/06/2008 10:16

If they never wanted Jodie, they should never have put her through. I think it's harsh to criticise them for things they already knew such as Jodie's or Niamh's size (and the short one too, whatever her name was!)

ipanemagirl · 02/06/2008 11:50

What was Jodie's sad background story? I missed that somewhere. I read somewhere that she only got voted in because of that.

A friend of mine thinks the whole series was really obnoxious - she was ranting yesterday to me that it was unacceptable to keep going on about Jodie's size when the public had the right to vote for whoever they wanted!

I think it's fair enough, Nancy is supposed to be a romantic lead imo, and Jodie is a different casting for that from usual.

I also did genuinely find her quite cruise ship in her style and also not a subtle actress. I thought Jessie, despite the rough edges would have been my ideal.

But maybe they'll understudy one of the losers?

tortoiseSHELL · 02/06/2008 11:56

I thought that Jodie's final As Long as he needs me was straight back to the cruise ship tbh. Now that there was no panel to comment, she totally reverted to that style.

Libra1975 · 02/06/2008 13:07

I found it interesting that the performers themselves thought Jodie would do a better job (apart from the perv)

DrNortherner · 02/06/2008 13:12

I loved Jodie from the start. She is fab and deserved to win.

I wish her well.

katierocket · 02/06/2008 13:15

Jodie is pure cruise liner fodder, why the weird grimace when she sings too. Yes she seems like a lovely girl and a decent sort etc but I certainly wouldn't say she was the best for the part. Agree that CM and ALW were gutted.

3andnomore · 02/06/2008 16:31

I thought it was funny when they asked Cameron what he thought of Jodie being Nancy...and he said: "I am thrilled..................................for Jodie...."
possibly not quite so thrilled for himself, eh....

EffiePerine · 02/06/2008 16:37

most disappointed, I was rooting for Jessie (who was the best by far on the night) and DH for Sam (he was also a big Rachel supporter)

Raahh · 02/06/2008 16:42

leaving things to the great british public, means the majority will go for what they know.It worked for ALW with maria- the gbp picked his favourite. Most people will only know Nancy from the film, and Jodie fits with that version. And unlike Maria or Joseph, nancy isn't the lead, so anyone rushing off to get tickets based on this would be disappointed anyway. She's the main female role- but she doesn't carry the production. I hope Jodie gets a fair go, and am sure that most of the other Nancys will get parts in other stuff. What am i going to watch on a saturday now?????

beansprout · 02/06/2008 17:34

What's on next week?

Raahh · 02/06/2008 17:44

football?

Raahh · 02/06/2008 17:44

and big brother

which i refuse to watch...

but probably will!!!

Raahh · 02/06/2008 17:46

i wonder who the Bill Sykes will be in the show?

SaggyOldBagpuss · 02/06/2008 17:52

Its rumoured to be Burn Gormam who was Owen in Torchwood

Raahh · 02/06/2008 17:56

oooh...but he looks younger than jodie, so that wouldn't work!

SaggyOldBagpuss · 02/06/2008 17:59

before that it was going to be Nick Knowles and before that Danny Dyer.

So it could well change again

Raahh · 02/06/2008 18:01

danny dyer certainly has a good mean look about him....had this show been about a search for a bill, i wonder how many oliver reed looky likeys would have turned up?

TwoIfBySea · 02/06/2008 18:06

As someone who only watched this because I was waiting for Doctor Who I can say from not having seen the previous episodes that it seemed geared towards the curly haired girl (Jessie?) winning.

Jodie (who I know from The Biggest Loser) was fine as far as I could see. The second one on, slim with dark hair, got a rubbish song she could do nothing with in terms of becoming "Nancy". Then this one came on and she was very Bonnie Langford.

At the end Jodie gave a very good speech as to why she wanted to be Nancy, the other two kind of waffled.

I saw the very end of the very end too and while waiting to hear I thought the curly haired one looked a bit manic, very serial-killer eyes! Only kidding, well, not really, she did have this forced looked on her.

If people don't like who won I would assume the easy answer is not to go and see the show and if the people running the show didn't want a particular girl then they shouldn't have let the great unwashed do the picking. This is why I don't watch these shows...except for Britains Got Talent

turquoise · 02/06/2008 18:11

I don't think Jodie's size would matter at all, if she had star quality. What really bugged me was the way she (or the producers)constantly played it for the sympathy vote "I've never got the parts, I've always been a big girl" - no, you've never got the parts because you're a cruise singer.

The bloody british public, who seem determined to celebrate and elevate mediocrity, fall for it and create yet another reality 'star' whose ordinariness is their greatest feature, and the entertainment industry is the poorer for it.

(That, by the way, is what I was saying very badly in shorthand earlier when the thread was moving very quickly, and it didn't come across at all.)

MummyPenguin · 03/06/2008 08:13

Well I think that it's great that a larger girl won. There's so much emphasis on weight, size etc. It would have been dull if a skinny pretty young thing got through. Too predictable.

As for Jodie's As Long As... I think she just didn't want to over act it and I think she was right not to.

As much as I'd love to go and see Jodie in the show, I won't pay the West End prices because of the ridiculous choice of Olivers. Just goes to show that in this case, the public made a better choice than ALW and CM

MargaretMountford · 03/06/2008 09:33

it's not her size though, it's her cruise ship persona that is wrong

RosaLuxembourg · 03/06/2008 11:54

Agree with Turquoise and Margaret. If I wanted to see a Nancy like Jodie I would go to the local AmDram production.
Jessie did something really special with that song on Saturday. She is in a different league. I thought she and Gwion were really good together too - they looked like they were actually enjoying themselves.
