Just binged watched the whole 4 episodes . What a lovely flawed family, I really think they are completely made for each other. It was also amazing watching all the highs and lows of his football career, but god we should be ashamed of what the England supporters put him through when he slipped up in the world cup against Argentina, what he went through was horrific .

DH and I both commented on the Argentina kick incident that we’d completely forgotten the game actually ended in a penalty shootout with two England players failing to score theirs. They must have been silently thanking Beckham for taking the heat off them in the press after.

angeltulips · 10/10/2023 21:46

I think the issue with the penalties was that beckham was sent off early in the second half so England played for almost an hour with only 10 men - so they were exhausted by the time the penalties came round. Not that anything excuses the hideous aggression beckham got for it!

What I didn’t really have a personal understanding of was what a skilled, intuitive player he was.

Having watched him again, he was clearly talented but I'm not sure he'd stand out as exceptional in today's game. Lots of the top footballers have pinpoint accuracy for passing and the added pressure of less time on the ball.

Agree that Gary Neville comes across really well, I'd forgotten how funny he can be (in his Burberry hoodie not a scarf).

Really? Someone who was scouted by United then signed by Real Madrid. OK then.

That's not what I was saying. Not whether he was good then but that the game has since moved on.

Same for rugby, the level of fitness and physicality is in a different league (which isn't necessarily a good thing in terms of head injuries).

Late to the party here but I disliked them both until I watched this. Actually really like them both now, might even buy some of her eyeliner 😆 Shocking how he was treated when he was only a young boy.

Desolatewardrobe · 14/11/2023 09:22

Also late to the party but I think what is bothering some people is that all the posters on here saying ‘I’d always thought X but now this documentary has made me really like/admire them’ are being manipulated by a very one-sided piece filmmaking, entirely controlled by them. It doesn’t massively matter for the Beckhams, of course it doesn’t, but it does really matter on more important stuff if we don’t think about where information comes from and who is invested in us believing it. This is all about that knighthood, along with the performative queuing.

There are no real challenges to what Beckham says from the interviewer. We see his version of things. The editing is fantastic, the interviewees are fascinating, there is just enough controversy to make us superficially think it’s a rounded picture. We get that his father was a nightmare but also probably the reason he ended up where he was. But the overarching narrative of successful family man treated unfairly by the press has clearly landed for many, when much of that felt uncomfortable to me.

@Desolatewardrobe Interesting take.

Funnily enough after watching I think less of him but more of her. Not sure if that’s what they were hoping for

Yes, this!! Had always assumed the moves to Paris/LA etc were driven by her but the doc made it seems like that wasn’t the case, she was just expected to follow with the kids.

Desolatewardrobe · 14/11/2023 16:27

Well, I do agree that he doesn’t come out of it shining to me either. But he’s meant to. Everything about it is about the talent he had and the unfairness of his treatment by the media/football management etc. And how much he loves his wife of course. Very little of which gets any push back at all.

Same.

I enjoyed the first episode as found it very nostaligic for the time period (even though the talk of what went on wasn't nice) and they seemed happy talking about their early relationship but the later ones did seem quite obvious that he turned into an arse with the Rebecca Loos thing and then just seeming to do whatever he wanted and expecting them all to move around after him and he looks completely uninterested in Victoria now
