Just binged watched the whole 4 episodes . What a lovely flawed family, I really think they are completely made for each other. It was also amazing watching all the highs and lows of his football career, but god we should be ashamed of what the England supporters put him through when he slipped up in the world cup against Argentina, what he went through was horrific .

I always feel sorry for her, with all her millions she’s quite clearly in the grip of an eating disorder and has been for years. She looks ill. That seems like a pretty miserable existence to me. There was a picture of her recently wearing a backless dress and she looked starved, all her bones sticking out.

I think that’s fair and probably true for a lot of men/famous men.

However there are a few exceptions and some people genuinely repent their mistake. In his case, it seemed to me from the documentary to be a symptom of his life at that particular moment - ditched by his beloved United, alone in a foreign country, wife busy elsewhere. It doesn’t excuse it but it does explain it.

So 50/50 I reckon on if you or I are right!

But do you know him personally?

Lottapianos · 05/10/2023 13:08

I've never thought VB seemed vacuous at all; I think a lot of that stereotyping came about because she's very fashion conscious, unapologetically loaded ( I mean, what were they supposed to do with the millions) and pretty much kept her mouth shut because she knows she could never do right for doing wrong.

She seems pretty smart to me; pretty introverted, has built and maintained her family and businesses for decades while looking awesome. What's vacuous about that? That's a bullshit misogynist take.'

That's how I've always felt about her. She's had to deal with Meghan Markle-level abuse and misogyny for decades, particularly because she doesn't walk around with a grin on her face. The press have always wanted her to shut up and just be a trinket on his arm, but she has always insisted on having her own career and being her own person. I think she's great, and I'm looking forward to watching the program

yes and it's on the record too.
Geri Halliwell too.
I've seen posts on MN re people the same height/weight as Posh/Ginger Spice and they've been met with "oh we've lost sight of what's a healthy size/weight, she's lovely"
I remember a tiny diet obsessed mate of mine enviously coveting Geri's figure when Geri was (unbeknown to my friend) in the grips of bulimia which landed her in rehab.
My own daughter had an eating disorder and in the midst of it, I lost count of the number of people who commented on how amazing she looked. She didn't have a period for two years, but apparently had amazing cheekbones now. Sad

I've just finished watching this.

It's clear that Victoria Beckham has put up with a lot. David has a big ego and has lived a very selfish life. Even though he can hopefully now see the hurt and damage he caused with the affairs and all the moving, I don't think he regrets any of it. I think he views it all as necessary to fulfil that ego but I think he should count himself as very fortunate that his marriage and family have survived.

The hacked emails released a few years ago reveal far more than a sanitised documentary. DB came across
really badly there.

i don’t like how their kids were paraded in front of SM, nothing was private

Edited

Oh yeah, completely forgot about that.😯 That was never addressed in the documentary.

Howsimplywonderful · 05/10/2023 13:42

The fact that DB charged a charity for a flight which he got for free (sponsorship) was a low that I don’t think there is any way back from. He was engaged in the discussion, it wasn’t something someone did on his behalf without knowing

BasiliskStare · 05/10/2023 14:46

I did read something about DB some time ago which did not portray him in a good light ( based on recordings not gossip ) & it was clear he is angling for a knighthood and some charity work wasn't approached in the spirit.

That said , he is a talented man and very easy on the eye ( personally I would think better without the tattoos - BUT that is a personal opinion , others are available - lots of people like them and everyone to their own choice ) so not surprising he can get sponsorships / adverts etc .

Haven’t watched it yet but seen clips. Feels like we are being manipulated by the mighty Beckham PR machine.

Has everyone forgotten what a big, fat, greedy hypocrite he appeared to be last year when he accepted millions from the Qataris to promote the World Cup?

They’re just good actors.

Agreed it is by them for them. Whilst I enjoyed watching it what would be fascinating is if a former nanny or someone close did a doc on what they're really like

coxesorangepippin · 05/10/2023 18:22

He does seem like a really nice person

And he never lost his temper during the dark years!!!

Ugh to the hooligans

coxesorangepippin · 05/10/2023 18:23

What hacked emails?

youwouldthink · 05/10/2023 18:47

Just finished episode 2...not a football fan but this is fascinating. He had such strength to get through that.
Also hate the way Hoddle treated him.
Loving this show

Crimsonripple · 05/10/2023 19:26

I've now finished it. I thought they both came across really well. The whole affair thing I think likely did happen...like someone has previously said he was lonely, dumped by the club he didn't want to leave and ignored by the father figure of Alex Ferguson, and playing out of of position at Real. It's not an excuse but it perhaps shows why he did it. I don't think Victoria is a mug for staying with him and perhaps they did have a brand to protect but overall there is definitely a lot of love and respect there. Many sacrifices also made by Victoria once he left Man Utd in terms of where to live.

Howsimplywonderful · 05/10/2023 19:30

If people google the emails they will find out such gems as dismissing Katherine Jenkins for her OBE, declaring he’s not giving his own money to unicef, calling the gong committee ‘ungrateful c*nts for not giving him a knighthood, talking about what charity work he should do to get said knighthood.

He came across as quite unpleasant behind the jovial front.

Of course he seems 'nice'.

That's the whole point of the 'documentary'. To paint him and his family 'brand' in a positive light.

But I agree with @Howsimplywonderful that there are plenty of hints that he may not be quite so 'nice' when the cameras are off.

Mookie81 · 05/10/2023 20:20

hevs03 · 05/10/2023 11:05

The Beckhams are in my opinion all about the brand, I do believe they once loved each other but now have an arrangement in place, potentially an open marriage, he has always been known to cheat and I'm pretty sure there a few NDA's floating about, there are way too many rumours for some of them not to be true about it. Why did they not sue Rebecca Loos and the newspapers if the affair did not happen.
They pimp out their children who (except Harper) have achieved absolutely nothing in life so far. I think David can be particularly cruel to Victoria, I get the impression that whilst she was the more powerful one when they first got together, he then became the world famous footballer and has relished being the one in control, after all it is he who bankrolls her failed fashion empire (her company has always been in debt and never made a profit), I do think she has an eating disorder (just my opinion) he did admit she only ever eats fish and steamed veg every day, she even had a water melon birthday cake. She never seems particularly happy but then who knows what goes on behind closed doors. I wish her well and if the rumours of his cheating are true I hope she leaves him, ditches the stupid diet and finds happiness. (and their children get jobs !) 😀

From what I've heard from people who have had children at the same school, Rebecca Loos (alledgedly) was the tip of the iceberg.
And his bullshit 'queuing for the queen salt of the earth' shtick wasn't fooling me.

Yes!
It was so transparent and so is this bollocks documentary.
He's shown himself to be an arsehole behind the scenes enough times for it to be obvious his public face is fake.
As for his kids, well- why would you put them up for that, especially Brooklyn the super chef. Hmm

Amie2020 · 05/10/2023 20:57

They are a well oiled PR machine. I felt a little like they were trying the sympathy card for the treatment he got over the red card and tried to work the viewer from there. Also they certainly didn’t deny the affair but it was hard to distinguish whether they were saying the difficulty at that time was from the alleged affair or the intrusive press. Again very carefully scripted. Posh imo comes across as very fake imo. David less so. Came away from it thinking this gives me kuwtk vibes.

Oblomov23 · 05/10/2023 21:23

But it seems to be working. All over SM today people are saying “The Beckhams deserve an apology for how they were treated in the 90s” and gushing praise about what a wonderful couple they are.

They have achieved exactly what Harry and Meghan set out to get but spectacularly failed at with their Netflix doc namely, sympathy, admiration and public support. The Beckhams have the benefit of history behind them - every famous person is owed an apology for the 1990s! The tabloid press ruled unchallenged and printed whatever they wanted.

David wasn’t the only footballer who got stick from the fans, I heard the chants about John Terry - they’d make your hair curl! What about all the black players who were verbally abused every week and received death threats?

This is just a very expensive, high profile campaign to get him a knighthood and I can’t believe people are buying it.

Crimsonripple · 05/10/2023 21:42

John Terry made racist comments and a down right twat. I don't think you can compare.
