THE RECKONING - bbc 1 mon 9th - 9pm and Tue - TV PACE NO SPOILERS

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/10/2023 16:31

There will be four episodes in total, with the second airing at 9pm on Tuesday, October 10.

The third and fourth episodes are likely to air on the following Monday and Tuesday.

The Reckoning stars Steve Coogan as Savile and has spent a long time in production, with a planned release in 2022 reportedly being delayed due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

It will trace the life of Savile from a working-class background to one of the biggest stars in television and will also focus on his years of sexual abuse and the impact he had on his victims.

Saville (https://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/news/national/uk-today/23729749.bbc-reveal-first-official-image-steve-coogan-jimmy-savile/)
died in October 2011 aged 84 having never been brought to justice for his crimes.

By not talking about it, you don’t get to the nub of that and if you don’t look at it you’re destined for those things to happen again.

The drama answers the question: how did he get away with it?

"The drama answers that question which is a very important one."
The series will also feature interviews with four of Savile's victims.

Thanks Blondes. Not likely to be an enjoyable watch but should be interesting.

lazymum99 · 03/10/2023 16:47

I’ll probably watch it and I know what he did was awful etc but there have been so many documentaries and stuff on Netflix that it feels like it has been done to death

daffodilandtulip · 03/10/2023 16:58

I was going to say that it feels a bit soon, didn't realise he'd been dead for quite so long!

AnyFucker · 03/10/2023 17:38

Ugh

paranoidnamechanger · 03/10/2023 18:30

Jimmy Saville was feted in Ireland.
He was involved with a charity The Central Remedial Clinic.
It helps children and adults with disabilities.
He visited hospitals.
He led charity walks.
I wonder why there has not been an investigation of his activities in Ireland.
I believe there are Irish victims too.
Very vulnerable children and adults.
I so wish some fantastic investigative journalist would investigate his activities here.
For many it will be too late because of the passage of time. Sad

BeverleyMacker · 09/10/2023 10:50

I'll watch but I know it'll be a hard watch. Saw the lady who was abused in church as a little girl being interviewed on GMTV this morning :( I met him once at Broadmoor aged 13/14. Back then I hadn't heard any of the rumours about him but he kissed my hand and gave me the creeps 🤢

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 09/10/2023 10:55

Please add me @Blondeshavemorefun!

My Savile story… aged 9 I raised money for PHAB (one of Savile’s charities). I organised a jumble sale to be held in the village hall of our local church. All my classmates got involved and the local paper covered it and our photos were in it. Raised £500.

Savile invited us all to watch Jim’ll Fix It being filmed and my and DB and my class got to meet him. Luckily being 9 I was probably underage for him and my DM was with me but when all the scandal came out about him DM asked me in a panic if he’d tried anything on, I said no. Despicable man.

I'm in bed with covid and an idiot so didn't see this thread... I started one here but feel free to either abandon or for anyone to use who wants to discuss it faster than TV pace. I've also added a couple of links.

And the link didn't even work 🤦‍♀️ here you go

MartyFunkhouser · 09/10/2023 12:03

I have just watched the first one - it’s excellent. Steve Coogan is mesmerising and has captured him almost too well.

SecondClassReturnToDottinghamPlease · 09/10/2023 12:08

I'm undecided so will keep an eye on this thread to see what people think. It's too close to home for me.

It's extraordinary. The voice and the mannerisms are spot on, and he's absolutely captured the sinister edge. That jester costume towards the end of episode one!!!! Nightmare o'clock.

Supersimkin2 · 09/10/2023 12:15

I might watch the lot tonight, it’s all dropping at 9pm apparently.

Interested to see if Coogan & Co shed new light. Louis Theroux didn’t.

I think it’s all too easy to see how he got away with it. And that’s the problem.
