Blondeshavemorefun · 03/10/2023 16:31

There will be four episodes in total, with the second airing at 9pm on Tuesday, October 10.

The third and fourth episodes are likely to air on the following Monday and Tuesday.

The Reckoning stars Steve Coogan as Savile and has spent a long time in production, with a planned release in 2022 reportedly being delayed due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

It will trace the life of Savile from a working-class background to one of the biggest stars in television and will also focus on his years of sexual abuse and the impact he had on his victims.

Saville (https://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/news/national/uk-today/23729749.bbc-reveal-first-official-image-steve-coogan-jimmy-savile/)
died in October 2011 aged 84 having never been brought to justice for his crimes.

By not talking about it, you don’t get to the nub of that and if you don’t look at it you’re destined for those things to happen again.

The drama answers the question: how did he get away with it?

"The drama answers that question which is a very important one."
The series will also feature interviews with four of Savile's victims.

Wow Steve Coogan sounds and looks so like him.

The voice. The hairs on the back of my neck are on end.

Motnight · 09/10/2023 21:18

Watched the first episode. Not at all sure that I want to watch any more. It is incredibly well written and acted, but it's such a difficult watch.

daffodilandtulip · 09/10/2023 21:28

Are we meant to feel sorry for him, because his mum didn't want him/is disappointed in him?

It's creepy how much he sounds like him.

PrimalOwl10 · 09/10/2023 21:38

I wonder if his mother knew and saw his darkness

EmpressSisi · 09/10/2023 21:44

It’s horrible but compelling viewing.

tealgate · 09/10/2023 21:49

She's not buying it ☹️

Grim subject matter but very well done. SC has his accent and voice down to a t.

No, rather I think we’re meant to feel sorry for his mother, sensing the darkness in him but compelled to feel like she ‘should’ love him because he’s her son.

daffodilandtulip · 09/10/2023 22:20

It seems like so many people "knew" from an early stage, and yet he still kept climbing.

Readingineading · 09/10/2023 22:28

Watching abroad so cant get iPlayer. Agree that Steve Coogan has done a brilliant job, as has the writer. Heartbreaking , sinister.

Mischance · 09/10/2023 22:32

My DD was desperate to get on Jim'll Fix It. How glad I am that her letter was ignored.

lionsleepstonight · 09/10/2023 22:37

Steve Coogan is quite remarkable. Interesting to see he was seen as 'weird' at the time. Hopefully as the episodes progress we get a better understanding how or why it was all swept under the carpet.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 09/10/2023 23:00

He definitely was - then the marathon running and charity work meant people overlooked the weirdness. Not only did he present TOTP and Jim'll Fix It, he did lots of public information films too. SC's portrayal is excellent.

Blamethecat57 · 09/10/2023 23:04

This is SC best work yet.
It's a horrible story.
It's being told well I think.

MouseMinge · 09/10/2023 23:13

I've only watched the first tonight although I might do some bingeing. I sometimes like to have a decent drama to look forward to. Coogan is incredible and I'm pretty sure he'll win awards for his performance. He's almost as creepy and scary as the man himself. If the following episodes are as good as this one it's going to be difficult but compelling viewing

BoreOfWhabylon · 09/10/2023 23:19

Very difficult but compelling watch. Captures the time periods perfectly.
Steve Coogan is extraordinary.

BoreOfWhabylon · 09/10/2023 23:20

@MouseMinge we both used the same words "difficult but compelling"!

The way they've framed the narrative and used footage of the victims could have looked hokey, but it absolutely works and is very powerful.

placemats · 09/10/2023 23:25

I won't be watching this in one go as I find the whole thing very upsetting.

I think Coogan as the older depiction of Savile is realistic, but he shouldn't have played him as the younger one. Reasons for this being that Coogan doesn't look young enough for Savile in the 1960s. A younger actor should have done it. I had to keep checking the dates of how old Savile really was then. With all due respect to Coogan he doesn't look like he's 40 in the 1960s.

With much love and respect to those who were sexually abused and used by Savile. x

MartyFunkhouser · 09/10/2023 23:29

I think he pulled off the various ages. People in their 40s in the 60s tended to look older than 40 year olds nowadays. And Steve Coogan is so incredible in the role, another actor playing Savile younger would potentially have ruined it.

Great minds think alike. Or, as my DM used to say, fools seldom differ! 😁
