Blondeshavemorefun · 03/10/2023 16:31

There will be four episodes in total, with the second airing at 9pm on Tuesday, October 10.

The third and fourth episodes are likely to air on the following Monday and Tuesday.

The Reckoning stars Steve Coogan as Savile and has spent a long time in production, with a planned release in 2022 reportedly being delayed due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

It will trace the life of Savile from a working-class background to one of the biggest stars in television and will also focus on his years of sexual abuse and the impact he had on his victims.

Saville (https://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/news/national/uk-today/23729749.bbc-reveal-first-official-image-steve-coogan-jimmy-savile/)
died in October 2011 aged 84 having never been brought to justice for his crimes.

By not talking about it, you don’t get to the nub of that and if you don’t look at it you’re destined for those things to happen again.

The drama answers the question: how did he get away with it?

"The drama answers that question which is a very important one."
The series will also feature interviews with four of Savile's victims.

I'd be interested to know which year Dan Davies , who was writing Savile's biography , came close to the truth ? Savile stopped giving him interviews [ep3] , maybe Davies reported his suspicions at the time but hit brick walls .

I was wrong , he re-started doing his interviews , just seen ep 4.

I think the worst thing is that it was all made public after his death . If only he'd been caught and arrested in life and thrown into prison , lots more people's lives wouldn't have been destroyed . Beyond sad .

It was an open secret. No one had the appetite to do anything. It’s frightening how he got away with it.

ageingdisgracefully · 18/10/2023 17:37

Is anyone reading the book? I am and halfway through.

I'm in my 60s and remember Savile pretty throughout his career although too old for Jim'll Fix It. I'm astonished to know that it had 15m viewers! I just thought he was an oddball amongst a whole load of other oddball presenter types. Nothing particularly sinister, and, in later years, rather sad.

greengreengrass25 · 18/10/2023 17:42

I've ordered it from the library

It does seem really obvious watching it now (on ep 3) that people in power knew things were going on and either abetted it or looked the other way. What I don't really understand is why haven't those people in charge of the various institutions now been taken to task? Or all they all dead? If alive then perhaps they are Protected from consequences by those even higher, I would say with my suspicious conspiracy theory type hat on.

It also seems to me that the people in power must have had similar interests as JS, in order for him to gain so much unsupervised access in eg broadmoor, morgues and god knows where else, filled with vulnerable people, plus for him to get out Scott-free of all the so-called rumours with no issue. He was protected and covered for, must have been. I haven't watched all the episodes yet so not spoilers, this is more just a musing on everything that came out after he died and from reading pp here. I remember watching Jim'll Fix It as a youngster and also being aware that there were mutterings about him, and as a pp said here, open gossip that seemed to suggest the masses had known 'rumours' for a long time. So of course those higher up must have been aware. I had read previously in the news about the police high ups hanging out at his flat and they had some sort of dubious 'club' going on, it reeks to high heaven.

I feel so sad for all of his victims, how must they have felt seeing him lauded all over the country. Sickening. Such courage for them coming forward and for some of them waiving their anonymity.

Rummikub · 18/10/2023 18:09

Did they often do the big group medallion for participants of Jim’ll fix it? Cos I’m sure I remember watching as a child and seeing a group of boys (scouts or school) receiving a big group medal. And it shocked me to realise that Kevin was in that group.

I just went to Amazon, I was thinking about buying the book, and discovered that I'd bought it last year. It must have been a 99p offer. I might start on that when I finish my current read. I think Dan Davies "knew" but he had absolutely no hard evidence so what could he do? Go to the police and say "I'm pretty sure this man rapes young girls and has sex with corpses but I have no actual evidence." He'd have been laughed out of the police station.

Someone's found old footage of Coogan & Savile together on the same programme here:

Caught up to ep 4 now. I don't know what's more horrific - what he did, how arrogant he was about what he did, how much people were fooled. It's scary.

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/10/2023 13:56

Sex with corpses ?

I missed that bit

The part in the morgue when he was alone with the corpse and the orderly came back and shooed him out? (I wondered if it was implied with his mother too...something incredibly creepy about those scenes of him with her body.)

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/10/2023 14:29

Oh that

I didn't get the impression he was going to have sex

Yep. Kevin was promised his very own badge if he went to Savile's dressing room. He singled him out because his mum got JS a gift of a bow tie :(

Yes i remember them.doing it more than once if it was a group fixit
I do remember a group of scouts asking if Jim could fix it for them to eat their lunch on a roller coaster
Was Kevin in that group of scouts?

Well he was notorious as a necrophile so I think that's what was being implied (certainly the morgue/orderly scene).

Rummikub · 19/10/2023 15:19

@x2boys yes that’s the one I remember too.

I don’t know if that group fix it was school or scouts.

It was definitley scouts as i have just rewatched it on you, tube,,but i also remember, them having a group fixit badge more than once, although i cant recall the other fixits ,I also remeber feeling a bit sorry for them they didnt get their own individual badge😳

Rummikub · 19/10/2023 18:11

I remember thinking that too about not having their own badge.

He was shown covering the body back up from the side . This was also a scene which SC refused to do in more detail.

No, not that group. Wrong year and they were from a different part of the country. I had wondered the same thing and looked up the lunch on The Big One at Blackpool.

@LGI my friend was a nurse on the children's ward at Stoke Mandeville at this time. Her husband was a charge nurse in another ward. They are both adamant nothing happened. I just don't get how she can believe that in the face of all the evidence. It's overwhelming. Evil man.

I did a month training stint on the paeds ward at Stoke Mandeville when I was a student, back in the late eighties. We asked if they'd met Jimmy Savile and the sister said he was not a nice man and she wouldn't let him on the ward. She was not specific and in our naivety we just thought he was arrogant and difficult.
