THE RECKONING - bbc 1 mon 9th - 9pm and Tue - TV PACE NO SPOILERS

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/10/2023 16:31

There will be four episodes in total, with the second airing at 9pm on Tuesday, October 10.

The third and fourth episodes are likely to air on the following Monday and Tuesday.

The Reckoning stars Steve Coogan as Savile and has spent a long time in production, with a planned release in 2022 reportedly being delayed due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

It will trace the life of Savile from a working-class background to one of the biggest stars in television and will also focus on his years of sexual abuse and the impact he had on his victims.

Saville (https://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/news/national/uk-today/23729749.bbc-reveal-first-official-image-steve-coogan-jimmy-savile/)
died in October 2011 aged 84 having never been brought to justice for his crimes.

By not talking about it, you don’t get to the nub of that and if you don’t look at it you’re destined for those things to happen again.

The drama answers the question: how did he get away with it?

"The drama answers that question which is a very important one."
The series will also feature interviews with four of Savile's victims.

YokoOnosBigHat · 09/10/2023 12:32

I only intended to watch one but I can't switch it off, it's compelling.

Daffodilwoman · 09/10/2023 13:48

I’m going to watch this. My dh did a charity run with Saville many years ago when he was a teenager.

I'll watch this, although I know already it will be hard viewing. I love Steve Coogan, glad to hear he's done a good job on this character.

In Maggie O'Farrell's book "I Am, I Am, I Am" she tells how when she was a child she was in hospital for long stints with a serious condition that required observation at all times. She says Savile visited the hospital and was very persistent that the nurse observing her could take a break for a while and he'd 'look after her' etc. She says she didn't feel any threat, had no idea who he was really. But the young nurse never wavered and Savile went off in a huff. Years later when the stories emerged, Maggie O'Farrell remembered the incident and considers that nurse a guardian angel. God knows what he would have done had he been able to have some time alone with her in that room.

Anyone who wants to discuss with spoilers I have started a thread. Hope that's okay @Blondeshavemorefun - wasn't meaning to step on any toes, I set it up without seeing yours (in bed with Covid and not as on the ball as I could be!)

Thread is here

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/10/2023 15:28

No stepping on any toes

Often a couple of threads

Mine is always tv paced as I like to absorb and talk about the episode and often things I've missed

But know many like to binge w s they can go to your thread 😄

Do you think there'll be poetic licence, and some kind of twist?!

We all know what happened, it's not fictional

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/10/2023 17:53

Just as in don't discuss Episodes if haven't been shown

Does anyone even watch TV dramas weekly, other than the OP, when they’re broadcast weekly but dropped in one go to watch on demand, as with this series?!

I’ve watched all 4 today and it was absolutely brilliant.

Steve Coogan is incredible in it.

Jennalong · 09/10/2023 18:37

Thanks will probably watch on iplayer but feel it will leave me feeling grubby.

Supersimkin2 · 09/10/2023 19:28

NotLeavingWithoutTheSpringRolls · 09/10/2023 20:11

DH and I are going to watch it later tonight. For those of you that have seen it, at what age would you let your (secondary age) children watch too?

SpicedAppleAndFreshCider · 09/10/2023 20:23

I'm a big fan of Steve Coogan so glad he's done a good job. I'm going to watch it but I'm not in the mood today.

MaudGone · 09/10/2023 20:24

Saviles younger associate - who called Savile 'father' - does anyone know if this is a real or fictional character? If it was real, who was it? Thanks

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/10/2023 20:58
