New BBC drama series follows on from the hugely successful, multi award-winning feature film of the same name

I HAVNT SEEN THE FILM SO NOT SURE IF WILL WATCH AS MAY NOT MAKE ANY SENSE TO ME

Eight months after her mentor Andy Jones (Stephen Graham) suffered a heart attack, head chef Carly (Vinette Robinson) is battling to forge a name for new Dalston restaurant Point North alongside her old kitchen crew. We follow the team as the stresses of keeping the restaurant running bear down on them amidst a hospitality industry in crisis. With the pressure to draw in new, hungry customers and the financial squeeze to keep the business profitable, the team must find a way to manage their complicated personal lives whilst creating quality food day in, day out.

I had to keep consciously unclenching my jaw watching that - not sure if I'm enjoying it or not, as you're constantly waiting for something to go wrong!

Ditto

I've watched both films now (the short one and the long one) - don't quite understand the timelines and how they relate although both clearly precede the series and Carly's restaurant. Also watched all 4 programs with Carly (no spoiliers, I know). Overall, a great binge watch and Stephen Grahame and Hannah Walters (his RL wife) are great, as are most of the other actors (the young waitress, in particular). The only bit I didn't appreciate was the NB character shoehorned in and the interaction with a middle aged womam, felt contrived and BBC agenda-ish, the series didn't need it.

I also felt that it needed to be longer as you only got brief glimpses of the back stories outside the main chefs which was a little frustrating (Jamie for example and his 'mum' the pastry chef's story also felt a little rushed/contrived.

The only other thing was that as I also recently watched both series of The Bear, this felt a little like 'The English The Bear' and suffered a bit in the comparison, even though I think it might have preceded the US series? as they had more time to explore the characters.

martinisforeveryone · 14/10/2023 18:32

I haven't watched The Bear, but mea culpa, I had missed this since the first episode and so watched it this afternoon but let it run on because I thought I'd missed more than I had really, so now I've watched tomorrow's too soon.

There's an awful lot of tension in everyone's storyline, but I am rooting for them all.

diddl · 15/10/2023 08:37

I don't like Nick at all.

Much prefer Freeman.

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/10/2023 22:08

Oh that was yet again stressful

Can't believe she took a drink after 13yrs 🥲 was that down to Jamie's cutting his self

Now have drugs in the mix showing easy money but hope he doesn't get caught

Why is Jake looking after his sister

So many have back stories which we don't know

Other kp - forgot she was Carly's gf and but shitty of her to let her down pretending to be sick

New French chef bit of a twat esp to other poor French girl

What was wrong with her dish

Had to google what hogget was. Like lamb

Amazing how manic a kitchen can be. I'm not cut out for it

Equally some customers can be right twats. Esp lack of spoon bloke

Thinking he was billy big bollocks making a joke like that

A simple please can i have a spoon

Who was blonde lady who said daddy paid off old chefs debt

Was that his business partner

I did watch the film but can't R.E.M.

Only one more to go 4 isn't enough

Need at least 8

I’m still catching up on this series. I find it odd though that they’ve started the series from where the other versions left.

I mean it’s on the BBC and not everyone would have see the Netflix version or the short BBC version. So some viewers may be a bit confused by the storyline if they haven’t seen the prequels.

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/10/2023 23:30

I had never seen it @Paul2023 hence my initial first post

But both were shown on bbc and think film4 before the is started

So I caught up from there

Weird how they did 2 films of the same thing tho

So she did drink the wine @Blondeshavemorefun.
I think the new sous chef was nasty to the French girl because she rebuffed his advances.
I'm not sure though.
It was salsify she was cooking, I've never knowingly tasted it. Apparently it has an oyster like taste.
The pace is relentless isn't it ?
Portraying the different types of people, it's so well done.
The waiter not writing the orders down - a restaurant near us has waiters like that and they always forget something 🙄
Anyone else think the maitre d' is a bit too easy going ? Some of the waiting staff are a bit too laid back.

That's the impression I got also.

Bloody ego!

My heart was breaking for Jamie and Emily, but my god that other lad stepped up with his army experience, talk about keeping a cool head.

They all live so much on the edge one way or another don’t they. I was praying for Emily to smash the wine bottle in the sink 🥲

The new sous chef is Canadian isn’t he but speaks French. He definitely had his nose out of joint because he got knocked back. Really fancies himself as coq 😉of the walk that one, he was undermining Carly all the time and speaking like he’s head chef.

I agree the maitre d’ seems well liked, but he’s just not very effective at his job.

paranoidnamechanger · 16/10/2023 13:58

This thread is quiet. Has anyone else lost interest? I can’t be bothered to watch the other episodes.

butterpuffed · 16/10/2023 14:08

There was nothing wrong with the French girl's cooking , the new chef was still annoyed with her as she rejected his advances .

Only one more episode to go ~ am surprised as we don't really know that much about all the characters , they only seem to have skimmed the surface . Really enjoying it though .

martinisforeveryone · 16/10/2023 14:14

@paranoidnamechanger there's a few of us watching these hour long dramas but not necessarily seeing them in real time.

I can't believe there's only one more episode either.

LadyEloise1 · 16/10/2023 15:27

Has anyone ever tasted salsity ?

martinisforeveryone · 16/10/2023 15:44

I'm sure I've had some in the past, something added to pimp up a restaurant dish but not really adding anything much to it if I'm honest. I regard it as a bit of bland nothingness that you'd probably be grateful for if you had to forage for berries, nuts and roots for nutrition, but otherwise wouldn't bother with.

diddl · 16/10/2023 15:52

I keep thinking that something will happen that makes Carly ask Andy to step in & help.

I'm watching it & finding it entertaining enough but I'm not on the edge of my seat or finding it really tense.
