@Umanresources “I think he felt sad for himself when he saw the photos of Ryan taken when he was on holiday, probably abroad, and realised that Ryan had the sort of childhood he had missed out on”

I liked the link back to TLR telling Dariusz that he’d never been abroad, last episode.

You could see darius a bit smirky at that comment, was expecting tlr to fly off the handle then but he respected and needed darius.
His comment and the marbella dream reminded me of midnight Cowboy 🤠
The unravelling and final exposure of tlr , although obvious was Brilliant, I beleive in his own effed up way he really had built up a connection to Ryan and loved him , lots of people in prison need that one thing to hold on for and to try for, he isn't capable of doing love but he loved him, has childish emotions and he'd built up a fantasy about being with his son.

he thought his showing off in court would really impress his son, not realising his son is emotionally and intellectualy head and shoulders above him and has likely seen kids at school behave like his dad and thought they were knobs!

BenCoopersSupportWren · 05/02/2023 23:25

Absolutely this. It didn’t need extra scenes with Rob or Faisal, they were B plots to the A storyline of Catherine, TLR, Claire and Ryan.

I feel sad for the people who were underwhelmed - genuinely sad, I don’t meant that in a patronising way. I enjoyed it so much, I want everyone else to share the satisfaction I’m feeling at what was, IMO, a perfect ending. I was nervous beforehand after being disappointed in the LOD “H” denouement after all that hype, but I needn’t have worried because this was so much better.

Agree with every word @BenCoopersSupportWren .

It was the perfect (and totally unexpected) ending.

But my word - I have throughly enjoyed the wild speculation that we've shared here.

I've loved watching week by week and trying to work out what was significant and what wasn't.

And I've loved being part of this seething nest of MN vipers.

Thank you @Blondeshavemorefun for keeping us supplied with threads so that we could just sit back and not have to worry about running out of space and not being able to find each other on the next one.

And thank you all for giving me such a good laugh and so much to think about over these few fabulous weeks!

Tlr was a perfect representation of so many hardened criminals, fucked up from horrific childhood, no idea how to show or receive love and needing to to be hard and scary etc. Its always a tragic story behind offending no matter what we think of the person they are now and the crimes they commit.

@Comewithmefriday - you're so right. Perhaps not all of them appear to have on the surface, but I'm willing to bet that something has happened to damage them emotionally.

Looking into the childhoods of the most appalling murderers - Fred and Rose West, Hitler, Andre Chikatilo - all had dreadful childhoods. It's probably only lack of opportunity that means we haven't got more brutal sadistic murderers.

We should be investing more in giving children good lives, both frothier sakes and for all of society's sake.

100% agree. So many kids living shit childhoods as we speak

PrincessScarlett · 06/02/2023 09:21

Yes loved it when Catherine told Tommy that Ryan was a prince. Showed us and Tommy how much she loves Ryan.

LadyEloise1 · 06/02/2023 09:23

Ryan being mistaken for a new recruit changed everything.
The masterful way the young actor played it, the slight hesitancy and then speaking of his contact with TLR.
It was a "sliding doors" moment.
But for the comment and his pride in it, he might never have revealed TLR's contact with him.
Brilliant writing by SW and brilliant interpretation by Rhys Connah.

Wee Poppy and her coat 🥲

It was a brilliant ending and it's fascinating to see all the disparate people and celebs on Twitter saying how amazing it was.
It would be lovely if it prompted even one commissioning editor to pause and think actually people will watch stories about older women, written by older women, acted by older women. People will watch stories with regional accents set in places that are often overlooked. People will watch stories that raise ethical and moral questions and answer them with characters of steady conviction. Honestly, I'd give all of them all the awards, from Ryan to Catherine, from Clare to TLR - they have all been fab.
My DS said maybe Ryan will join the police and the next season will be in 10 years time with him and the PE teacher's DDs and called Sad City. Here's hoping! 😀

Well said, Winnie.

People will watch intelligent TV about other people like themselves placed in unlikely bu plausible situations - real people with real lives. The sort of writing and acting we used to get on Corrie and Emmerdale before they got silly.

I wish we could get away from the mindless "reality" dross as well.

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/02/2023 09:28

Yes would have been nice to have found chemist finger print in blood as well so goes down for jos murder

But hopefully the drugs will link him and he will blah when prodded

jibbe · 06/02/2023 09:30

TLR also knew the game was up he didn’t want to leave Ryan without the stability that he had which illustrated his love and compassion because all the desire for revenge had gone out of the window.

Emotionalsupportviper · 06/02/2023 09:31

Gardengirl108 · 06/02/2023 00:06

They’d already tried to kill him in prison - the result was that scar on his forehead. But I don’t know why they wouldn’t have had another go.

It got the police off Darius' back regarding the body in the quarry.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 06/02/2023 09:32

Actually I'm not sure how Rob wasn't charged with his wife's death considering the circumstancial evidence the police had, as well as a bloody fingerprint

Emotionalsupportviper · 06/02/2023 09:36

Agree with @EsmaCannonball - another episode or two, or even this final one extended by 1/2 hour so we could see Neckbeard crumbling as the evidence came out, Pfizer's wife opening the door to the police and her face when she realised that they were there to arrest him, not ask him to described his "prang" in the car, Darius striding arrogantly out of a boardroom just as an arrest team walked past his office receptionist and up to the door . . .

It would have just been that little bit neater.

But the ending was otherwise PERFECT! I couldn't have asked for more.

Also the police had no DNA evidence that Faisal was at Jo’s house so how can he be caught for the murder as some PP’s have said?

HappyBirthdayLydia · 06/02/2023 09:41

Loved it so much. Brilliantly played out.

Thought it was significant that he kept looking at his stomach injury - some sort of realisation that his strength was waning and part of that weakness opened up some sort of emotional porthole- hence all the photo album looking and weeping...

If he was truly a psychopath (as Catherine has him down as being) he would no doubt have found a way to finish her off despite his physical suffering. Instead we saw a 'giving in' which made you wonder (he bleeds as we all bleed) given the right opportunities he also could have had a different outcome- he's just a human at the end of it all?

Just brilliant writing and themes. Sunday night won't be the same next week!

PrincessScarlett · 06/02/2023 09:44

We are left to believe that the police will now look for evidence re Faisal now Catherine has implicated him. He will either crack and confess or he will not have done a decent clean and they will find evidence of him being in the house. If Jo's blood was all over the house from Rob beating her then you can bet Faisal's DNA will be there from the numerous times he'd been in the house prior to when he murdered Jo.

Thanks for this link @colouringindoors - can’t argue with James Norton’s comment about SW and SL from his GQ interview ‘These absolute heroes, these Queens of our industry, are the best there are.’

I LOVED that line!

It was an excellent interview - I can't remember who posted the link, but thank you.

And for people who think that if you want an intellectual challenge you don't watch a cop show - this was a superbly written, intelligent drama, and there are others - The Wire, Luther, and you could argue that The Sopranos, Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, although not cop shows are in the same field.

It can be done and it has been done. Let's hope it's done again.

Crumpetdisappointment · 06/02/2023 09:45

yes Faisal didnt normally wear gloves and shoes, there may be footprints

Clawdy · 06/02/2023 09:45

Maybe in a few years we will be watching a new series with Ryan as a young police officer with an ancient granny in a care home, who helps him solve mysteries!

But isn't it hard to believe he wouldn't initially have been charged with his wife's murder? Bloody fingerprint, body found in suitcase in the family home, evidence from post mortem of historical abuse..

Come on, Happy Valley is nowhere near in the sane league as those TV classics!

The fact that he discovered and reported her body probably helps on that front - if he had killed her why would he call it in? Surely he would attempt to dispose of the body.

Of course it is! I'd say better than some of those too
