Just loved it- a storyline led by the relationships (big and small) between characters.
I loved how in the end, it's Ryan who is the key. He reminds Catherine of the important role Clare played in his life. He's the sensible one, without any 'baggage' despite his difficult early life. He was protected from all that by Catherine and Clare, but poor Catherine didn't see that until the end. Ryan's visits to TLR allowed TLR to get to know him, and in the end realise that Ryan had had a good upbringing and a happy childhood.
I also liked how TLR is the one that helps rid the area of a major drug dealing gang- thus helping Catherine get what she wants, just as her career ends.
And her driving off to the Highlands is much more realistic than the Himalayas- she won't be gone as long and so the implication is she still wants to be involved with her family, rather than leave them all behind.

How do you know she was off to the Highlands?

redspottedmug · 06/02/2023 08:48

It was in her text messages from Mike Taylor at the end, when he let her know TLR had died.

Also I noticed that cc and Ryan are both left handed and that made me think that she really IS his granny.

I'm so sad that that handsome chops TLR is dead. I wouldve visited him when he was comatose and we could have re enacted coma guy episode from friends. Teams played sports.

Every cloud.

Actually, I've noticed in the past that quite a high proportion of actors seem to be left-handed* - I've often commented to Mr Viper.

The right-side of the brain is considered the "creative side" - and it controls the left side of the body (the nerve fibres cross-over at the neck). I've often wondered if this is influential, and if artists, poets etc show the same higher proportion of left-handedness

*more than the 10% in the general population, anyway

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/02/2023 08:50

Loved the way we felt for Tommy

He saw how much Ryan was loved

That's if he had a better life he could have been a better loving person

That nature v nurture came to head

What Catherine feared for all her life

And as Ryan had love all his life via claire and Catherine that he turned out ok

A Prince !!!

Did anyone say Tommy would kill his self ?

Think we all said someone would do it to him

There are so many nuances in the shape, everything is said or designed for a reason.

I was pondering C's scarf, always wrapped around her neck, a comfort blanket of her own.

And obviously knitted by Clare, with love. Judging by the crochet blanket comment, and Clare's own space-dyed jumper.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 06/02/2023 08:51

I thought it was brilliant, understated and gave us the end we needed for TLR, Catherine and Ryan which is the point.

I would have liked it to have been 90 minutes so we could have had a little more closure and screen time for the secondary characters such as Ann, Richard, Faisal and Rob but it is a small matter. The face off between CC and TLR was the point of the series and a fitting conclusion.

The acting was unreal though, JN, SL, SF and ROC deserve all the awards.

JN was sublime the way his face switched from lost sad little boy who could only dream of the childhood Ryan had, to murderous rage and then self pity was brilliant an absolute masterclass.

What lovely observations. I hadn't noticed until you pointed them out.

I find it hard to believe anyone would burn themselves alive 😱 but then that shows TLR sadistic character I guess.

I know two people who have tried and lived, v disfigured. I also know 'of' many others but these are the two I know for fact.

When people talk about HV stretching credibility, some is because it's beyond our personal experience/ knowledge, others is because ultimately its a TV show, for entertainment.
If every bit of it was like reality it would be like watching paint dry.
There'd be none of Catherine's sharp one liners, no coincidences with all roads leading to the kenezevics, no lightbulb moments , etc

Ref creepy rob, many sex offenders may have a 'preference' ref age and gender but many more are opportunists above everything else, especially for the really prolific ones. it's about time and place, vulnerability, grooming potential as well as preference. I know it's not real but I'm so glad he was caught !

Emotionalsupportviper · 06/02/2023 08:54

Houseplantmad · 05/02/2023 22:51

Can someone explain how her colleagues were alerted he was there. She didn’t say anything and I missed what happened somehow! Could they hear the dialogue between her and TLR?

I think is was a silent alarm she pressed on her "walkie-talkie" (God - I'm old - do they still call them that?" which set off an automatic "officer in danger" alarm at the station.

Emotionalsupportviper · 06/02/2023 08:54

watcherintherye · 05/02/2023 22:50

Well, what are we going to do now?

<crickets>

WinterFoxes · 06/02/2023 08:54

@JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon - I agree it needed to be longer. It felt a bit squashed into the time. I would happily have seen a bit more on Faisal's story, I had no idea how they caught Darius, I'd like to have seen how Neil and Catherine were now interacting, something of Anne and Nev - not tidy closure just life going on in each of their lives.

JinglingSpringbells · 06/02/2023 08:55

I was pondering C's scarf, always wrapped around her neck, a comfort blanket of her own.

Oh no. I didn't see it like that at all.

Just a woman who wasn't into clothes, her priorities lay elsewhere, and wore the same stuff every day.

VioletaDelValle · 06/02/2023 08:56

The fact he killed himself played into the whole narrative that was created in those final scenes....... it was about HIM.

HE didn't want to back to prison, HE didn't apologise/feel guilt for any of his actions, HE forgave Catherine.
If he'd have killed himself before Catherine arrived home then there would have been a possibility of Ryan finding him making it all about TLR again!

His reactions and face and yo-yo emotions was a perfect illustration of being around a real psycho.
Everything's fine until its not,
hence all the walking on eggshells people do around violent people (and how so many violent hardmen 'heroes' have people kissing their arse all the time despite everyone knowing they're monsters )

beachcitygirl · 05/02/2023 23:08

Utterly underwhelming ending to one of the best shows ever.
Sarah Lancashire is phenomenal actor but overall I thought it was lazy & meh.

Subtle not underwhelming. In scenes like TLR in Ryan's room so many things were said without any words. We didn't need to see Rob or Faisal in court we knew what would happen. The very heart of the show was in the strength of the relationship between Ryan, Catherine and Clare and Tommy's effect on it.

I was genuinely crying because I could feel what Catherine was feeling - great acting there. I also think Tommy believed what he was saying about loving Becky and Ryan but he was so screwed up he didn't know what love is. I think he realised that to some extent when he saw evidence of Ryan's happy childhood.

Nobody else was responsible for his death which left them with clear consciences and nobody else had to go to prison (like in some of the predictions made). Ryan wasn't much in the second half which was good as he was protected from any violence. He had come to his own conclusions about TLR and told the police what he knew about Rob and could grow up and maybe become a Police Officer himself.

JinglingSpringbells · 06/02/2023 08:57

If he'd have killed himself before Catherine arrived home then there would have been a possibility of Ryan finding him making it all about TLR again!

But it always was about TLR. He was the main character, not CC. (IMO)

thegreylady · 06/02/2023 08:59

I loved the last episode even more than I enjoyed the others. I am going back to series one now. For me the most heartbreaking moment in the whole series was last week when Ryan said, “I love you Gran” and Catherine just turned away and said “What brought this on?”
The funniest was last night when Ryan asked when he would get his games console back from the police. My grandson is the same age as Ryan and I can really see how beautifully the actor has drawn the troubled teenage boy.

WinterFoxes · 06/02/2023 09:00

Crumpetdisappointment · 06/02/2023 08:23

oh and you could actually tell from Ryan's body language, going up the stairs, that he was proud to be mistaken for a new recruit,
marvellous acting

I know. That was such a beautiful moment. You could see his life changing course in a millisecond. Fantastically acted.

JinglingSpringbells · 06/02/2023 09:01

For me, the most interesting part to discuss is the personality of TLR and psychopaths.

JinglingSpringbells · 06/02/2023 09:03

Did no one think that CC came over a cold? In the last scene she let it all out, but I didn't warm to her at all for most of this final series.

Emotionalsupportviper · 06/02/2023 09:04

Comewithmefriday · 05/02/2023 22:51

That was fooking brilliant. I cried loads.

Tlr was a perfect representation of so many hardened criminals, fucked up from horrific childhood, no idea how to show or receive love and needing to to be hard and scary etc. Its always a tragic story behind offending no matter what we think of the person they are now and the crimes they commit.

Love how she finally woke up re Ryan, he's such a beautiful boy and a real blessing to their family, was so heartbreaking seeing tlr look at the pics, could see the cogs turning and him realising his son has everything he never had.

Intrigued about darius, wonder he had ever planned to get him to marbela or if it was always bullshit?

Presumably he changed his mind when tlr was talking about revenge on Catherine or he heard on the grapevine ref the games console being found?

Horrendous Rob Hepworth. He reminds me so much of someone I know irl whos abusive and predatory.
Wonder if that's what his wife was hinting at when she said about him drawing in kids and being their friend?
I know it's fiction but despite the dbs checks, still millions of abusers get into these positions with kids and vulnerable people all the time, makes me sad.

Glad there were no stupid twists like Neil being Tommy's dad or other whack conspiracies and glad he didn't kill her.
Was intrigued by the trio of gangsters in the car, especially the long haired one, was the only incongruous bit for me

Anyway, gutted its over. I thought it was a Brilliant ending. They made me laugh at times with their conversation in the kitchen.
He played it so well.
Sad for Ryan he died but it gives him a clean slate to move forward into adulthood having the answers even though they're horrendous.

@Comewithmefriday - you're so right. Perhaps not all of them appear to have on the surface, but I'm willing to bet that something has happened to damage them emotionally.

Looking into the childhoods of the most appalling murderers - Fred and Rose West, Hitler, Andre Chikatilo - all had dreadful childhoods. It's probably only lack of opportunity that means we haven't got more brutal sadistic murderers.

We should be investing more in giving children good lives, both frothier sakes and for all of society's sake.

LadyEloise1 · 06/02/2023 09:06

@Ladybug14 "......But would a psychopath who has killed multiple times, raped at least twice.......would this psychopath look at a bedroom, a photo album or two.........decide to commit suicide and then forgive the woman he hates most in the world ?
I just don't get it. Surely he'd take the opportunity to kill her? "

I agree with you.
I think a more realistic ending would have been that he kills her. He's just killed another three men and Darius will be gunning for him. He's a dead man walking, with nothing left to lose. Catherine was his to kill, taser or not.

However James Norton, in that GQ magazine interview says that Tommy Lee Royce is not a psychopath. He's a damaged individual because of his upbringing.

I'm glad we got a "nicer" ending.

I think she came across as a woman at the end of her tether.
She'd given so much of herself to others (family, job) and she felt they'd all betrayed her in some way.
She was a bit martyred at times but in the last episode realised that the 'betrayals' weren't quite as she'd built them up to be.

Ryan talking about the constant presence of Clare, Ryan meeting TLR and realising what he's really like etc all clicked into place.

She was well and truly done with the job though! Hence to walking out of her own party.

foxlover47 · 06/02/2023 09:11

I still would
Like
To know what sally wrote for the original ending that was advised to change , just because I am hungry to know !
This was the first thing I thought of when I woke up !
I read , Molly who played Jonanna said to a paper last week that poppys coat being on was a defence mechanism bless her.
I actually think how Tommy got out of that murder set up in the car was brilliant , of course it was violent how could it not of been

LilLilLi · 06/02/2023 09:12

That was utterly brilliant.

I worked with teenagers leaving the car system, most of them had had the most horrific, neglectful childhoods. None of them were raised on love, they’re angry, prime targets for gangs, we’ve already had one charged with murder but most of them are selling drugs.

I can see why TLR is as he is, it all starts in childhood and I cried for him, and I cried for the people I work with because honestly, there are so few positive outcomes when you’re raised that way, without love and care.

Fabulous, fabulous acting. Loved it.
