They’d already tried to kill him in prison - the result was that scar on his forehead. But I don’t know why they wouldn’t have had another go.

They didn't have another go because he agreed to lie in his testimony about the man in the lake so Dariusz wasn't implicated. Once they'd broken him out, they realised his preoccupation with Catherine was going to get him caught so they decided to kill him.

Vivi00 · 06/02/2023 00:12

I absolutely loved it and it wasn't what I was expecting. It went full circle one of the main focuses of the show was Catherine's trauma over her daughters death. When her daughter held her hand when Catherine had nearly given up was beautiful. The ending at her grave was fitting , Catherine finally has some peace and can move on with her family.

Umanresources · 06/02/2023 00:12

You could see that he was struggling to even understand what Catherine was saying most of the time and keep up with the conversation.

He had been drinking and had taken an overdose, which would make it harder for him to keep up surely?

I think he felt sad for himself when he saw the photos of Ryan taken when he was on holiday, probably abroad, and realised that Ryan had the sort of childhood he had missed out on. That’s when I felt sorry for him too, but then was reminded what a psychopath and killer he really was.

I thought it was a really satisfying ending. I really enjoyed this episode and it didn’t need every single thing to be so neatly tied up.

SL and JN should be getting awards. JN was on a podcast with Grace Dent last week and he lived in Yorkshire as a young lad, and said he had a right strong Yorkshire accent as a youth.

SW played a blinder with this series. A perfect ending in my view. Thank you.

Xyzzzzz · 05/02/2023 23:39

I wonder what the original ending was before Sarah had it changed

I think maybe it included a death (or deaths) of a main character?
And SL, in all her infinite wisdom, thought it would be a better ending for Ryan to not have to suffer any more trauma in his life.

PriamFarrl · 06/02/2023 00:14

I love that the arresting officer for tweedledum and tweedledee was a woman. So many great roles for women in this series.

I would have liked the episode to be just a little longer. While I like that the Fisal storyline tied up I think it could be been done with a knock on the door and his face. We are clever enough to make the connections with the drugs in the flat etc.

Lanneederniere · 06/02/2023 00:16

Series 1 and 2 were both entertaining and thought-provoking on multiple levels, raising questions of sociology, politics, and human interaction.

Series 3, in contrast, seemed to have been designed with the www.gov.uk guidance for web page content in mind, i.e. "Write for people who have a reading age of nine years". Anodyne, bland, twee and not intellectually meaningful.

In other words, the series has been dumbed-down BBC-style, despite the outstanding skills of Sally Wainwright.

Disappointing.

colouringindoors · 05/02/2023 22:26

Thanks for this link @colouringindoors - can’t argue with James Norton’s comment about SW and SL from his GQ interview ‘These absolute heroes, these Queens of our industry, are the best there are.’

trythisforsize · 06/02/2023 00:22

Some great lines, 'butter wouldn't melt in his arse' being my overall favourite.
Wankatron will become part of my vocab.
I feel a bit guilty at finding TLR so attractive though. Sexy psycho. So cute!

Testina · 06/02/2023 00:23

@Umanresources “I think he felt sad for himself when he saw the photos of Ryan taken when he was on holiday, probably abroad, and realised that Ryan had the sort of childhood he had missed out on”

I liked the link back to TLR telling Dariusz that he’d never been abroad, last episode.

AntonDuPig · 06/02/2023 00:24

Testina · 06/02/2023 00:05

@Southeastdweller “So Faisal got away with killing poor Jo.”

You need to go back and watch again! No he didn’t! 🤣

Yes, it will all lead them eventually to Pfizer being Jo’s killer when the post-mortem shows she was killed by the air embolism in her bloodstream, with him being a chemist and now known to be the supplier of prescription only drugs…

Umanresources · 06/02/2023 00:27

@Testina yep I liked that link. He sounded like a child when he said that.

FlyRobinFly · 06/02/2023 00:27

Poor bride of Tweedledum!

We never did find out why Poppy never took her coat off

Why do people keep asking this?

It was a visual clue to how vulnerable she felt in the household. I used to wear my coat as a kid in a house filled with violence. Does everything have to be spoon fed?

watcherintherye · 06/02/2023 00:32

FlyRobinFly · 05/02/2023 23:55

That’s actually exactly what I meant

Sorry, I misunderstood.

no problem, I didn’t articulate it very well. I drank a few glasses to get through the episode lol

Exactly! I also think it’s a hint at clear emotional neglect from Joanna, so consumed in her own trauma she doesn’t engage with her kids properly whereas to most mothers its second nature to say “Take your coat off” to your child when getting home, you don’t even think about it.

Blondewithredlips · 06/02/2023 00:59

I found ending rushed and disappointing.

FlyRobinFly · 06/02/2023 01:05

The show is all about parents and parenting.

TLR was failed by his mother, and wanted to do right by Ryan in his own bizarre way.

Catherine, and her relationship with Becky and her son, and how she has had to parent Ryan.

Neil missing his kids after his divorce so bonding with Ryan.

Alison’s complicated relationship with her son.

Florence and Poppy’s turbulent homelife and being neglected as a result of their father’s abuse of their mother.

The bald guy is series 1 (forgot his name) wanting to get his child into a private school, going to ridiculous lengths to pull it off. Doing something awful ‘for the sake of’ his child. Parenting gone haywire.

Nev’s bond with Anne, and the lengths he went to try to rescue her in series 1.

FlyRobinFly · 06/02/2023 01:05

Oh and John Wadsworth saying “I loved my kids” before throwing himself off the bridge

If you're looking for something intellectually meaningful I don't think a cop programme on TV is the place you'll find it.

It’s a strange comment isn’t it! HV is a drama, not a social sciences lecture.

Deadringer · 06/02/2023 01:14

The ending was nothing like I expected and I am so glad. So many programmes have shoot outs and big dramatic scenes, just so predictable. I think SW dared to do something different and it paid off. The two main characters had their show down, but a poignant, tearful, albeit angry show down. Like real life it wasn't black or white, both Catherine and Tommy are neither all good nor all bad, just like real people. I think Tommy did love Ryan and Becky too. He was a psychotic scumbag who didn't deserve either of them in his life, but he was capable of love. Fabulous acting all round, i hope they win lots of awards.

JaneJeffer · 06/02/2023 01:16

I thought the Catherine/TLR showdown was a masterpiece of pathos and humour.
Still chuckling about the “Hello” - “Hiya” opener. Genius touch there. No being over dramatic - just calm as you like whilst we were all holding our breath and silently screaming “What the feck are you doing Catherine! GTF out!”

Spot on @AntonDuPig
