I wonder what the original ending was before Sarah had it changed

PrincessScarlett · 05/02/2023 23:41

Fantastic finale! Best ending to a series EVER. Sarah, James and Siobhan were all phenomenal and deserve awards for their performances. The writing was excellent.

Also loved Catherine calling out "hello" and TLR replying "Hiya" 🤣

Catherine realising at long last that Ryan is nothing like his father. The whole nature Vs nurture. Tommy realising that Catherine has given Ryan a good life, something that he never had. Just brilliant.

Although violent, loved the scenes with TLR realising that he was going to be killed. I was actually willing him to get away from them. And it was a decent reminder of what TLR is capable of seeing as he's been relatively quiet for the first 5 episodes.

Happy that it was implied Faisal will go down for drug dealing and killing Jo and that Rob has been caught out for grooming.

I've never been so satisfied with a final episode before. I feel at peace 😃

WinnieFosterReads · 05/02/2023 23:41

It was a brilliant ending and it's fascinating to see all the disparate people and celebs on Twitter saying how amazing it was.
It would be lovely if it prompted even one commissioning editor to pause and think actually people will watch stories about older women, written by older women, acted by older women. People will watch stories with regional accents set in places that are often overlooked. People will watch stories that raise ethical and moral questions and answer them with characters of steady conviction. Honestly, I'd give all of them all the awards, from Ryan to Catherine, from Clare to TLR - they have all been fab.
My DS said maybe Ryan will join the police and the next season will be in 10 years time with him and the PE teacher's DDs and called Sad City. Here's hoping! 😀

Ditto. I said to DH that whilst it all felt wrapped up it also felt rushed/lazy in places, like they needed an extra episode or something. The whole Faisel thing wrapped up in a couple of sentences, no presence of Anne or Daniel. Even Ryan felt absent after the first half. I also really struggle to believe that given they moved the whole family to a safe location because they believed TLR would likely target the house, would it not have been staked out? At all? Even the conversation between Catherine and Tommy just felt like the same lines we've heard them say a million times before, no real shockers there. I get that they wanted a 'neat' end, but for once I was left feeling meh.

Me too. It's the only episode of Happy Valley that's ever left me cold.

I liked how it started, TLR ending up betrayed by Darius and Ryan coming clean about the Marbella plans. And the conversation between TLR and Catherine was interesting.

But it needed at least another episode to wrap things up, and the payoff wasn't satisfying enough for me.

Dancingwithabroomstick · 05/02/2023 23:43

Amazing, loved it! I couldn’t breathe through most of it, real edge of the seat stuff, so rare these days

She changed it? I didn't realise that

EsmaCannonball · 05/02/2023 23:46

My one criticism of the final series was that the pacing was off. I wish the BBC was a bit less stingy with its dramas. Even when it has a verified hit on its hands it will still limit a writer to six episodes. In this last episode the Faisal/PE teacher storyline broke a cardinal rule of drama by telling the audience what had happened, rather than showing the audience what had happened. The BBC needed to hand Sally Wainwright a couple of extra episodes to let the storylines breathe.

We know that Sarah Lancashire got Sally Wainwright to change the final episode. I'm wondering if Ryan being groomed by his teacher was originally intended to be a bigger strand of this series? It seemed to be hinted at in the first three episodes, and then we got that throwaway line about the teacher being a groomer in the last few minutes with nothing happening in between. It's a shame that the secondary storyline was so underdeveloped and unsatisfying.

NashvilleQueen · 05/02/2023 23:47

I just saw that someone said the special effects were poor. I was just about to post this from an interview with James Norton today. That they built the entire kitchen elsewhere just to film that one scene is incredible.

'You think it was the kitchen we shot in Hebden Bridge. That scene wasn’t actually shot in that house. What they did was they built a whole kitchen in a studio, because I think it would be hard pushed to go and ask the owner of the house ‘do you mind if we just exploded a human being in your kitchen?’
So they built it in a studio. Amazing art department. They literally built the exact room down to the scratches on the surface, the same kind of mugs, the same kind of plates. It was incredible. It’s a very special feeling when you’ve got 100-odd people, all in one room, all quiet, all doing their jobs to the best of their ability.'

MrsGhandi · 05/02/2023 23:47

Southeastdweller · 05/02/2023 23:33

I completely agree. It was so predictable apart from TLR’s ludicrous comments of how he’s grateful for Catherine for giving Ryan a nice upbringing. I just didn’t but it, despite the brilliant performance from James Norton.

So Faisal got away with killing poor Jo.

I enjoyed the series overall but it wasn’t up to the same standard as series 1 and 2 and was crazily hyped by most of the media. I think Sally Wainwright took on too many stories to do a six part series justice and none were really as satisfying as they could have been by the end.

No - the police are on to Faisal.

watcherintherye · 05/02/2023 23:48

You could see that he was struggling to even understand what Catherine was saying most of the time and keep up with the conversation.

I didn’t read it like that at all. I thought he captured perfectly the incomprehension of someone who is hearing portrayed a version of themselves, which is completely at odds with the one they have in their own head.

Teedeedum · 05/02/2023 23:51

After such great acting this just popped up on Instagram and thought it was nice to see Sarah and James having a hug… no petrol… no tazer 😉

Good ending Ryan was nothing like his Dad Loved that Ryan managed to reconcile Catherine and Claire the two two women that had been constanted in his life.

That’s actually exactly what I meant

AntonDuPig · 05/02/2023 23:56

Well we were led right up the garden path with the double de-clutch herring but we were spot on that TLR was never going to Marbs 😂

Little Poppy’s coat was her literal wall of protection around herself, to shield her from her sh*t show of a home life 😢
Hopefully she’ll be alright once she’s with her Grannies.

I thought the Catherine/TLR showdown was a masterpiece of pathos and humour.
Still chuckling about the “Hello” - “Hiya” opener. Genius touch there. No being over dramatic - just calm as you like whilst we were all holding our breath and silently screaming “What the feck are you doing Catherine! GTF out!”

When she strutted out of her house, steely eyed and victorious but clutching onto those two photo albums for dear life - that broke me 😭

And then summing it up for Clare “We’ve had a bit of a tussle. I won.” 🤣😂
(Also very fitting and grateful to SW that Neil was not in the scene)

So happy it concluded with no more traumatic deaths for Ryan to witness.

Flipping amazing ending.

Findyourneutralspace · 05/02/2023 23:56

We never did find out why Poppy never took her coat off

Gardengirl108 · 06/02/2023 00:00

Last week when we were all so concerned that Catherine didn’t tell Ryan she loved him… we needn’t have worried. Ryan told her he loved her and he didn’t need her to say it back. Because Ryan KNOWS she does 🥲

Xyzzzzz · 06/02/2023 00:01

EdieLedwell · 05/02/2023 23:43

Yeah Sarah didn’t agree so Sally changed the ending

DorritLittle · 06/02/2023 00:01

Perfect ending! Loved it.

Testina · 06/02/2023 00:05

@Southeastdweller “So Faisal got away with killing poor Jo.”

You need to go back and watch again! No he didn’t! 🤣

middleager · 06/02/2023 00:06

I loved it, especially the scene with Catherine and TLR. They were phenomenal.
Catherine flicking through those albums, and her conversation with Ryan nearly had me in tears. It's because I have two sons his age.

If I could change one thing, I'd like to see Faisel's face when the police knock on his door.

Gardengirl108 · 06/02/2023 00:06

ladymacbeth · 05/02/2023 23:05

he was going to kill him all along.

Then why break him out? Not exactly hard to get someone killed in prison if you're a mafia boss!

They’d already tried to kill him in prison - the result was that scar on his forehead. But I don’t know why they wouldn’t have had another go.

Lifesyoungdream · 06/02/2023 00:09

Sometimes in life it’s the simple down to earth things that make the most pact I’m glad we’ve had a drama that reflective that. Well done to the writers and actors in Happy Valley it been a fantastic series.

Boulshired · 06/02/2023 00:09

I found myself with tears coming down my cheeks with no idea why. The last 30 minutes relied on pure acting, no gimmicks and it delivered.

OneEnchantedEvening · 06/02/2023 00:10

What was the original ending?
