Thanks for the new thread Flowers

TLR knew he was dying, he was taking all the pills and booze to ease the pain, and if CC hadn't come home he would've died.

Emotionalsupportviper · 06/02/2023 10:06

Thank you @Blondeshavemorefun

A callback to the last thread if you don't mind

I thought they were brilliantly acted. I mean Rob was a nasty violent man with paedophiliac inclinations. But there was also sympathy when you saw him caught in the snare in the police interview. And I also felt that as a teacher he did want to help children at the same time as bully/disturb them. He was a really complex character.

WHAT?!

NO sympathy for Neckbeard - none at all.
He is a violent, bullying ephebophile who went into teaching because it gave him access to vulnerable children and power over them.
These men don't want to "help" children - everything they do is opportunistic and self-serving.

Possibly he had a bad childhood himself, in a different way to Tommy - when his mother said "I'm not going to ask you if you did it>" it was obvious she thought him capable of it, and I wondered if his father had been violent towards her - but he had the opportunities to turn his own life around that TLR was denied.

He might not have murdered people like TLR, but I'll bet he ruined as many lives, if not more.
I hope an entire ring of perverts came crashing down with him . . .

As said on previous thread, we need a new series in a few years with Ryan as a young police officer solving crimes with the help of his old granny in her care home!

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/02/2023 10:09

Yes Ryan aa trainee would be fab

Maybe Ann would be a detective

Another nod to last thread. (Sorry - I just have to stick my oar in 😁)

Actually I'm not sure how Rob wasn't charged with his wife's death considering the circumstancial evidence the police had, as well as a bloody fingerprint

He very well may be - the other charge can be immediately proveable and allow the police to hold him for longer to fully investigate Jo's death. The CPS may then decide that there is enough on the balance of probability to prosecute him. I think they will, myself.

I think Faisal will go down for illicit drugs.

Even if he's 30 doubtful she'd be in a care home? She's mid 50s. Can you tell I'm a similar age? 😉

CARE HOME!

Cheeky bugger - she's younger than me and I'm nowhere near that yet. 😂

Telephome · 06/02/2023 10:15

I loved the way Ryan swelled with pride when the DCI mistook him for a rookie. What a clever way to reiterate that despite the fears throughout the story, he is in no way like his father.

These young lasses @CuriousMama - think if you're over 30 you're nearly dead.

😂😂😂

Telephome · 06/02/2023 10:17

I know not everyone is satisfied with the ending, but o the whole it seems liked people loved it.

I bet the cast feel a bit better than the LOD folks did the day after that one 😂

UnleashMyPicasso · 06/02/2023 10:17

I’m rewatching it this morning:

  1. the petrol tank magically moves - its in the footwell when TLR realises he is going to be murderer. It’s back in the boot by the time he gets to Catherine.
  2. when he kills the three in the field he replays in his head Ryan saying the last place he is allowed to be is anywhere near home. I think TLR goes there to kill himself not Catherine (the tension we feel with him peering in is just pure drama), but he’s gone to what he thinks is an empty house to be near to Ryan and see his life, and finally appreciate it’s been a good life.
I’ll be back with more as I go.
ilovebrie8 · 06/02/2023 10:18

Thanks @Blondeshavemorefun for the thread! I loved it went out on a high! Just gutted it is no more...what a brilliant series. Did the OCG always plan to kill TLR off then? He knew something was amiss when they sad get in the car boot! 🙄They car and double declutch never came back to haunt us, but Alison provided a vital link to the pharmacist in the end! I did feel sorry for TLR at the end his life was wasted due to a horrific upbringing, I do think he loved Ryan...

blobby10 · 06/02/2023 10:19

I was absolutely blown away by the level of acting in that kitchen scene - SL and JN must have been SO drained afterwards. I'm actually glad the sub plots got a mention showing they had been resolved rather than their conclusions shown as the show was about Ryan and Catherine and Clare (who was always there for them both) .
Still want to know if Catherine picked up her £2k leaving present!! And did anyone else notice that in the final scene she was wearing red/pink and no scarf? I think thats the first time she's worn colour in the whole series and, I like to think, represented her release from the trials and tribulations that had been burdening her since Becky's rape and death.

UnleashMyPicasso · 06/02/2023 10:19

Oh and there’s a very clear nod from the chief super that he sees things in Ryan and thinks he could be a police officer. It’s reinforcing the fact Ryan is a good person, not at all like TLR, and shows a pathway to a new series in the future.

I thought this. He went there because it was an empty house.

Runrabbitrunn · 06/02/2023 10:23

Yes I also thought that TLR replaying Ryan’s words were him remembering the house would be empty.

I think he goes there to die but intended to set fire to the house with himself in it originally.

I also think it helped Ryan be honest during his statement about talking to tlr the night before, the policeman made him one of them just before giving his statement

Yes, he went to the supposedly empty house to die. And realised that he'd had a chance of normality with Becky and could've been part of CC's family. Sad

Yes, of course, that makes sense. Building a case before charging him.

Osteospermum · 06/02/2023 10:25

What I loved most about HV was how I really felt for all the characters, I cared what happened to them, whether they were ‘good’ or ‘bad’ and I know that was down to the brilliant acting and writing but too many dramas these days are full of mood music and long stares without any real dialogue or story. I am so glad that last episode focussed on Catherine, Ryan, TLR and Claire.

NashvilleQueen · 06/02/2023 10:28

Seeing the petrol can causes him to go back for the knife. He was supposed to be in the boot but said he would get in the back. They move it from the back to the boot whilst he is back in the house. I think they were hoping he hadn't seen it/moving it because he was going to be sitting there. I don't think it was some sort of continuity error.

FlyRobinFly · 06/02/2023 10:28

I still can’t stop thinking about the finale! The more I think the more I love the idea of Ryan becoming a police officer. What a great way to honour Catherine. I’m so glad they didn’t go the route of him being a vicious psychopath, at the end of season 2 I was concerned they were going that route.

And seeing Becky as well, said this in the last thread but genius to show us her life and personality through the photo album in the finale after she’d previously just been a name throughout the series. I was thinking we needed to learn more about her for the finale, and I was thinking flashbacks, but the photo album was a much more authentic way to do it. Gets you thinking that she was a teenager with a life and personality beyond just being “Catherine’s daughter who killed herself because of TLR”.

No mystery around the petrol can, I don't think: it was in the footwell originally because their plan was to put Tommy in the boot. He refused and went back for his "inhaler" (aka beetroot knife) so presumably they moved it to the boot while he was briefly back in the house as he'd insisted he'd be travelling in the car not the boot.
