Anyone seen this yet? I'm not quite as convinced by the casting for this season as I was for previous ones but will withhold judgement until I've watched the whole series.

Elizabeth Debicki looks the part as Diana, although I thought Emma Corrin captured her voice better. Dominic West is very flattering casting for Charles but Olivia Williams as Camilla is uncanny. I never thought she looked anything like her but they've made her a dead ringer! Same goes for Jonny Lee Miller as John Major.

It looks like this season will cover events up to and including Diana's Panorama interview.

Anyone?

I think Imelda Staunton looks good for the queen. I wasn’t a fan of a Olivia Colman. She seemed too old for that period of her life. It was too big a jump from Claire Foy.
I am excited from the trailer. But agree they need a statement that is is a fiction. Getting a bit too close to recent times.

PrioritiseCalm · 21/10/2022 11:30

Love it!

Whataretheodds · 21/10/2022 11:32

Eesh. I have loved and rewatched the whole thing so far. From this trailer I'm not sure about any of the casting (bar Camilla)!

John Major's voice doesn't sound right at all. Agree re Emma Corrin though Debicki certainly looks the part.

KillingMeDeftly · 21/10/2022 11:33

@olivehater Hopefully most people would realise it was fictionalised but who knows? Anyway I'm sure the royals will be fine - they've weathered far worse storms.

I didn't realise Timothy Dalton was in it but apparently he plays an elderly Peter Townsend.

I'm really enjoying rewatching the other series ahead of this. I'm mid season 4 now.

Getting very close to the bone!

KillingMeDeftly · 21/10/2022 11:36

The hair and makeup artists have really worked wonders as they look nothing alike!

Charles was never that attractive!

grayhairdontcare · 21/10/2022 11:39

Can't bloody wait for it!

ChocFrog · 21/10/2022 11:42

I just think the whole concept is in really bad taste. Making a tv show about someone else’s family troubles, making everyone behave like assholes to add drama, but refusing to add a disclaimer that it’s fiction. Cruel.

Politically it’s also bloody rude for Americans to make a drama about our King’s failed marriage. 😕

I don’t watch it because I won’t support that kind of behaviour.

KillingMeDeftly · 21/10/2022 11:58

Ok then.

Sooo excited now I've seen the trailer, not sure on some of the casting but then I wasn't when S3 first started!

Very generous casting for Charles, Camilla is an incredible resemblance though.

PanicAtTheBigTesco · 21/10/2022 11:59

Here I was hoping we would finally have a thread just for people wanting to enjoy it...

KillingMeDeftly · 21/10/2022 11:59

Alwaystired99 · 21/10/2022 11:38

Charles was never that attractive!

Agree! Josh O'Connor was excellent casting but Dominic West doesn't appear to have even gotten the voice right. But I'll reserve judgment until I've seen the episodes.

KillingMeDeftly · 21/10/2022 12:00

That was my intention @PanicAtTheBigTesco! Maybe the more ardent royalists could join the thread that's running on the royal family board?

I'm now wondering whether the voice I thought was JM is someone else.

I think the casting is more difficult as you come to the recent past where we have had so many full colour HD images and audio of the main characters at our fingertips and in living memory.

Of course it doesn't need a disclaimer. It's a drama series, in the Drama category, starring hollywood actors. It doesn't remotely come across as a documentary.

jay55 · 21/10/2022 13:07

I feel like for each member of the family they've got the casting really right once. And so the others always feel a bit off.

tigger1001 · 21/10/2022 13:32

I'm really looking forward to it.

I was late to the party as I honestly didn't think I would like it, but it really took me by surprise and have enjoyed each series.

And while I fully understand it's a drama series, it has taught me some things about the family I didn't know, or I had forgotten.

The Diana period though will be interesting as lots of us will remember the actual events being played out in the media.

KillingMeDeftly · 21/10/2022 16:57

I'm not sure how much material there would be for season 6 tbh. I assume Diana's death would feature early on and then? Edward and Sophie seem nice enough but their wedding wasn't exactly the public spectacle of Charles and Diana's! I guess the deaths of the Queen Mum and Princess Margaret will feature too, and the golden jubilee but it seems like the royals went through a fairly non-dramatic patch between Diana's death and William's wedding.

OP posts:
JanetSally · 23/10/2022 09:42

I agree. I also found the series set in the 70s quite dull. No abdication, arranged marriages, tragedies etc. Obviously in real life that was good, but it didn't make for the most interesting telly.

Southeastdweller · 23/10/2022 22:02

I'm already struggling with buying Dominic West as Charles with that voice, plus Imelda Staunton looks only ten years older than him. Lesley Manville - a brilliant actress - looks nothing like Princess Margaret, likewise Jonathan Pryce as Philip. But what do I know? I feel like I'm the only person in the world who thought Olivia Colman was all wrong as Queen Elizabeth.

sweatervest · 23/10/2022 22:06

i can't wait for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and the people that are moaning about it - as someone said on telly last week that netflix didn't ask any of jeffrey dahmer's victim's families for permission before they did dahmer etc so why should netflix say "dear prince charles. please can we make a programme about you" etc etc.

thedevilinablackdress · 23/10/2022 22:21

It's hardly the first time a TV show or film has been made about the current British royal family. I don't understand why people get so het up about the fact/fiction of it. The monarchy thrives/survives because of our interest in them, and this is all part of that.

starrynight21 · 23/10/2022 22:29

Hopefully most people would realise it was fictionalised but who knows?

You really think so ? I don't think they will, unless they were around when those things happened. Younger viewers will, I suspect, think it's all gospel truth .

I think it's disgusting to make a show like this, about people who are still alive. I hope nobody watches it.

Down with this sort of thing...
