I would love to know what went on behind the scenes to make him leave. Must have been huge to just go without a word or decent exit!

The only thing that's been vaguely rumoured is a mental health breakdown kind of problem, and checking into a clinic.
He was admitted to hospital years ago for a serious sleep disorder (he said he was only getting 1-2 hours sleep a week).

SheilaFentiman · 18/03/2023 15:20

Oh, the Karev exit?

yes, it sucked, but if the only thing they could still get from the actor was one episode of voiceover and the actor playing Jo didn’t want to leave, then they did the best I could, I think.

SheilaFentiman · 18/03/2023 15:21

Any other storyline (except death) eg moving to Iowa to take care of his mum would have taken Jo away.

Justme10 · 18/03/2023 20:23

Wasn't he chief of the other hospital when he left? I think he could of just remained off screen but Jo and Meredith still mentioning him occasionally.
Then maybe break Jo and Alex up at some point to continue her storyline.

I don't like the way he left at all.

Yeah, I think that other hospital just went away didnt it? I don't remember Richard and Owen coming back really. Maybe they had bigger plans for that storyline but had to shelve them when Alex left?

I think that even though the exit was bad, I don't see that they had much choice if they couldn't have him physically in any scenes. Having such a big character still around but off screen would have been odd.

Justme10 · 18/03/2023 21:20

Yeah I'm not really sure what happened with the other hospital either to be honest!
I just feel like he had so much progress as a character and he was amazing with Jo, it just didn't sit right that he would leave like that.

I've just looked it up. Catherine bought it and some of the staff moved over to grey Sloan. Tbh I think that sort of merged into the season ending early because of covid, so I guess that plus Alex leaving meant that that storyline wasn't properly finished.
Some of the other hospital's staff were there during the covid season (Perez?) but I don't think any are still there now.

SheilaFentiman · 18/03/2023 22:10

Perez was around last season, but all the residents would have gone when the training programme got canned.

I suspect that they had to do a massive amount of rewriting when whatever happened with the actor happened. He and Jo had just got officially married and I assume there would have been some co chief with the Irish doc stuff with Karev. I don’t think they had much time to play with as he announced it after he’d already done his last (courtroom) episode. I assume they sent him “to Iowa” for a bit whilst they played out other storylines that may well have been written and rehearsed already and then pulled something out of their arses.

I don’t think a prolonged off screen Karev and off screen break up would have helped (essentially, that is what they did over a few episodes)

SheilaFentiman · 18/03/2023 22:12

“? I don't remember Richard and Owen coming back really.”

there was a whole bit when Tom was interviewing Owen to be rehired at GSMH and was an arse about it.

Ah yes, it's all coming back to me now.

I get that they want to highlight a pro choice agenda with the situation currently in the USA but I thought this week's episode with the termination was ridiculously preachy and over simplified.

Triffid1 · 19/03/2023 10:06

I think the problem is that greys is almost more like a soap opera now. I bet half the writers haven't even watched most of the early seasons... hence the characters behaving ridiculously. Maggie really has turned into a horrible character- she was always ridiculously rigid but she's horrendous and if she is really leaving, that can only be a win.

Agree with a pp - the new interns feel like an attempt at a reset and it could even work.

SheilaFentiman · 19/03/2023 10:21

I wonder why winston doesn’t just try and get a job in cardio at Seattle pres.

anyway, the whole head of department thing has always been a nonsense, I get it’s for character reasons but heads only ever seem to have one attending reporting to them (link and nico, Maggie and winston, Arizona and Alex etc)

SheilaFentiman · 19/03/2023 10:22

In reality, I assume it would be a large department and Maggie and winston could work different cases

WalkAwaySugarbear · 19/03/2023 10:29

It seems like a brand new hospital externally too.
I like Greys, it's an easy watch. I'm distracted by one of the interns who played the lead character in Reign.

I haven't seen this week's yet, but I do think that over the seasons it has got less and less subtle. And now it does slightly hit you over the head with the moral message.

I disagree completely. This was much better than addisok and Bailey travelling all over the country with a woman dying in the back seat. It was a clear, no drama example.of when am abortion might be needed for perfectly normal, not extreme, situations and how easy it is to perform.

The anti abortion crowd and the pro choice crowd always turn it into such a huge drama. But in many situations its just a woman making a choice for her family or her self and getting it down.

pastabest · 19/03/2023 11:35

I've seen a trailer for what's coming up and the abortion stuff is going to be this seasons 'major disaster' for the hospital.

but yey.. more Addison and her weird frozen face.

vjg13 · 19/03/2023 11:52

@pastabest Interesting!

vjg13 · 19/03/2023 11:55

@Triffid1 The Bailey and Addison episode was abysmal though! I'm not sure why I'm still watching but I do want to get through to the end having watched all the previous seasons.

Agree with this.

The end of the trailer was 'NO DOCTOR IS SAFE' Shock

it came up as an advert when I was scrolling Facebook - I didn't actively go searching for it and thought it was old at first because it featured Addison.

Hope that means they're going to kill off Maggie! She's become insufferable. Maybe she'll be caught up in the abortion storyline somehow.

vjg13 · 19/03/2023 12:53

So episodes have covered death of patient due to lack of abortion, safe abortion performed in hospital and we've got probably Dr being murdered for performing abortion or just working at the hospital to look forward to. Not exactly subtle!
