Love love love this series

s8 - e1

The return of the programme where families from different socioeconomic rungs swap residences, spending plans, and daily routines for a week.

A life-changing experience for both parties occurs when millionaire property developer and lawyer Roy Ledgister swaps homes with a single mother. Becky Biggington.

Becky lives just 40 minutes away in a two-bed Sussex council house with her two young sons while Roy has a sizable Kent estate with a tennis court, swimming pool, and gym.

It must have been such a shock to see her.
Just wanting to be able to provide for her children and unable to, very sad.

this country is in such a mess. I’m not a high earner but above average and I’m shitting it about the energy bills that are coming so God knows how people like this Lady and pensioners are feeling.

I wish there was a reminder at the front of the supermarkets about the food bank as I always forget until I see it after checkout!
One of my neighbour’s does a collection now and again which is great.

Lollywillowes · 15/08/2022 10:44

Was anyone else shocked that he offered her an unpaid job at the end?

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/08/2022 11:08

@Ballsaque or round the shop by beans or pasta or cakes or tinned stuff

with a sign

food bank needs these. Please pop an extra can in your trolley

Was it unpaid though? He said as a consultant, surely he would pay her?

elliejjtiny · 15/08/2022 11:14

Love this programme. Although it's always a bit worrying that sometimes the people in the "poor house" are richer than us, I knew we weren't rich but I thought we were doing ok!

ilovebrie8 · 15/08/2022 11:45

He offered her a job as a consultant I’m assuming it’s paid. He was promoting his business too much I felt and the logo jacket too he gave her. I guess his family didn’t want to take part was odd with his business colleague as the other half.
felt so sad for the woman at the food bank 😮

I got the impression that it was a paid role.

I've only seen a few episodes of this and what I saw I liked because they seem to pick nice families and it's all very positive. It would be easy to do 'Look at these feckless poor people and these horrible rich snobs' but the ones I've seen have been much more about showing people are fundamentally decent, and tbh it's a message we need more of in a cynical world.

jay55 · 15/08/2022 12:18

My relative works in Morrisons and in her store theyve started to do packs for the food bank at a few quid so you can pick one up on your shop and drop it in the box on the way out.
They make sure it's things the food bank have asked for. Makes it easy for everyone.

MuffinMcLayLikeABundleOfHay · 15/08/2022 12:21

It was unpaid so it didn't mess with her UC.

really! that is strange as I thought she wanted to get earning a wage...I assumed it was paid work....

Yes agree! She had a nice house and a nice car and although I'm not an expert on tattoos, a couple of quite intricate ones.

ilovebrie8 · 15/08/2022 16:54

@Blueberrycreampie yeah she had a nice car I saw that....looked pretty new.

jay55 · 15/08/2022 18:48

They might get mobility rate for the son,

Wasn't the clothes shop trip weird? I know it was nice to be catered to but to not give them the option of going somewhere a step or two up from sports direct was weird. I always think they should just buy school shoes in multiple sizes with the money but I know there are rules on the spending.

And no corner shop trying to do a cheap food shop for the rich pair.

Yes, it would have been nice to see the kids taken shopping but we didn't see much of them at all in the rich house, did we?

swifttwist · 15/08/2022 19:52

I thought the clothes shop was very strange. She could have gone to marks and Spencer and kitted them all out, very well for £500. I also don’t get the Africa trip. It’s lovely he did it but a trip to Africa won’t keep her cupboards full and having to rely on a food bank. He could have given her vouchers for the supermarket which would have fed her family, even converted, ie Tesco vouchers to days out. I just feel a trip to Africa wasn’t the right thing to do.

I also wonder if this series is going to be a bit like Undercover Boss USA which basically ends with bosses given tens of thousands to employees for being good at their job. A status thing if you like, oh he gave a garden make over and a holiday, what will next week bring?

I haven't watched this yet but on the last series the man from the poor family came on here and aggressively said that the show was really staged and that they couldn't choose what to buy with the money, they were told what to buy from what shops.
From last series the poor families were all poor because they got into so much debt buying furniture and unnecessary items such as aquariums. Lots of custom made beds for the children that are luxury items. Most of the mums either worked very part time or didn't work at all. None of them seemed to be genuinely struggling.

purpleme12 · 15/08/2022 23:52

I felt like they put Rebecca (?) The woman in the food bank really on the spot.

Also I find it hard to believe she'd be worse off working. If you notice, they asked her a leading question for that one. They actually wanted they've to answer that she'd be worse off working

purpleme12 · 16/08/2022 00:09

jay55 · 14/08/2022 22:55

I think a lot of them treat it as a holiday, with free spending money.
It's l like staying in a fancy airb&b with all the takeaway they can eat.

Actually I usually hope that's what they do and that they don't get sucked into the snake oil salesmen world.
.

Yes they'd just see it as a holiday.

And why not really

purpleme12 · 16/08/2022 00:15

I found it really odd there was no footage of them all enjoying the swimming pool!!

lovelyboneslove · 16/08/2022 00:26

Apparently the millionaire has 5 kids. I wonder why they weren't mentioned and didn't go to live in the 'poor house'.

Wow they're usually at least mentioned even if they're not taking part
