Love love love this series

s8 - e1

The return of the programme where families from different socioeconomic rungs swap residences, spending plans, and daily routines for a week.

A life-changing experience for both parties occurs when millionaire property developer and lawyer Roy Ledgister swaps homes with a single mother. Becky Biggington.

Becky lives just 40 minutes away in a two-bed Sussex council house with her two young sons while Roy has a sizable Kent estate with a tennis court, swimming pool, and gym.

I never get the point of this programme. It just seems to be an excuse for the "rich" family to mix with the poor plebs and think they are doing something charitable by getting their spoilt kids to stay in a two bed council house for a week, and the poor family - well, I don't get what the poor family get from it apart from a week away in a luxurious house before it's back to the reality of their own poverty.

And where do they find these people who are so happy to display their wealth from exactly what expensive toys they have in their mansions through to the minutiae of their income and what they spend on everything? I find it exploitative and It knocks me a bit sick which is why I won't be tuning in!

QuandaleDingle · 14/08/2022 19:32

I've recorded it! Love this show!

hockeygrass · 14/08/2022 22:33

@Blondeshavemorefun , I enjoyed it but also noticed flaunting of business and branding on jacket he gave her - not good.

TinySophie · 14/08/2022 22:37

I really like this, but agree that there are a few too many “wanky” jobs in the rich house.

Funny that you knew the area and even Rebecca. I know that area too as used to work in Tonbridge. Small world as I know the maths tutor at the university!

augustablighted · 14/08/2022 22:45

I agree about the business branded jacket! Who was the Sharon lady the show was in memory of?

abovedecknotbelow · 14/08/2022 22:47

Becky deserved the break that's she now got. I hope it follows through.

I know @Blueberrycreampie was totally unexpected

the blurb didn’t say it was Kent , let alone my town

My husband and I are in the top 10% of earners and have a lovely house etc, kids fab activities. I work in one of the most deprived areas of the UK and no first hand what life is like.
I honestly do not see how bringing some of the families we support in work home to my house in the country for a week would be of any benefit other than to highlight what they don’t have.
I can see the benefit for the well off children, but seems an exploitative way to educate them on their privilege.

jay55 · 14/08/2022 22:55

I think a lot of them treat it as a holiday, with free spending money.
It's l like staying in a fancy airb&b with all the takeaway they can eat.

Actually I usually hope that's what they do and that they don't get sucked into the snake oil salesmen world.
.

Janedoe82 · 14/08/2022 22:59

And telling the world how poor they are. It is poverty porn.
I always feel so sad watching it.

Blueberrycreampie · 14/08/2022 23:02

I wondered if there was a father on the scene but I don't think that was mentioned?

Ballsaque · 14/08/2022 23:10

That lady in the food bank was so lovely.

I don’t normally watch this either,it makes me feel uncomfortable!

@Ballsaque she is lovely.

think this episode really struck home to me as local and I knew her and wasn’t expecting to see her

I know life is a struggle for her . But she is always smiling and I’m lucky that I can afford to help food banks and I do donate often

but seeing someone you know get upset that she has to use these banks really hit home to me
