DD12 was so excited for the new season but we’ve just watched the first episode and it was way too horrific for her. Well, she loved it but I’m not comfortable with it.

I know the series is rated 15 but she’s always watched it with me and has been fine with it and has watched other 15/scarier films but she’s never seen horror like that. I would rate E1 an 18 for sure.

Can someone who’s binged the rest of S4 let me know if that level of horror continues throughout?

Its not all the way through but when moments like that do occur I'd say they're about the same level.

An 18? Putting it on the same level of appropriateness as Trainspotting and Saw? I seriously wouldn’t put it at an 18, I think that’s mega OTT. I mean 18 year olds are living alone, out in the world etc. At 16 they can join the real life army! But the scene from the end of E1 is repeated/flashback through next episodes so it doesn’t exactly ‘continue’ but it’s repeated.

I do think a 15 is appropriate, I know In America they have put an extra warning esp for the first Episode given the timing of the school shooting.

The first scene was just lots of flash scenes of people and fake blood-nothing scary really I didn't think.
(and was that El??)
I did cringe a bit at the snapping of bones when Chrissy was being killed however!

Report
Kanaloa · 28/05/2022 20:50

Yes the bone snapping was gross! I just meant I couldn’t imagine being 17 years old age and being told I was too young for stranger things. I think some teens nowadays are really babyfied though/their parents see them as babies. But imagine thinking you should go to uni and drive your own car before you’re allowed to watch Steve Harrington play basketball and Dustin sing to his girlfriend from camp 😂 just a bit much. I think a 15 is fine, although I watch it with ds11. I appreciate not everyone would! But he’s very mature and I honestly think it’s entirely fine for him.

Kanaloa · 28/05/2022 20:52

Although for me weirdly the bit I couldn’t watch (TINY SPOILER) was El trying to give her presentation. I don’t know if I was having some sort of moment but I literally felt my eyes tearing up when the girls started sniggering at her when she was telling how ‘my dad is a hero to lots of people.’ I must be going soft!

@Kanaloa @Fml1980 Thanks for the perspective. Yes, I see you’re right about 15 being appropriate when you put it like that.

I think it was just the ramped up nastiness that shocked me (the Chrissy bit), especially as it has been tamer in previous series, and I suddenly had that “oh shit, what have I done” guilty parent moment!

We’ll see how she sleeps tonight!! 😂

Report
Kanaloa · 28/05/2022 21:47

Yeah I can see that shocking you! It’s not even that it’s super terrifying horror but more that it’s not expected if you know what I mean? Like if you were watching American horror story it wouldn’t shock you but it hasn’t really been the done thing in this show to have gruesome murders in that way.

Finished it last night. I was too worried about spoilers to take to long so I made judicious use of DD being in school and instead of doing anything even remotely productive I binged the first 4 episodes Grin, then watched 5 after she was in bed and 6 and 7 last night. I had forgotten how much I loved this series, it's been so long! Definitely going back for a re-watch to fill the time till the 1st of July!

I loved this series, I am a huge horror fan so I liked how they really leant in to all the 80's slasher flick influences. So glad they brought Murray back, he's my favourite. And how good was Jamie Campbell-Bower? That was a tremendous performance from him! And the use of Kate Bush! And Robert England! Loved it. Can't wait for part 2.

I was disappointed with this season. It's become to much of a pastiche stylistically

Ep 1 4 and 7 were excellent. Tbh they could have got away with just that. There was a lot of filler which didn't move the story on. Too long and padded. I think only yes men (people? 😬) Were involved

I've watched all the episodes so far.

It was quite slow to get started but then I started to see how things linked together and questions from previous seasons are starting to get answered.

The kids are all really wierd looking now as they have aged and I think that spoils it in many ways. It just seems less believable.

Milly Bobby Brown is still great as El. But Finn Wolfhard looks wierd and his character isn't likeable at all this season.

DH and I loved catching all the movie references too.

I always pay careful attention to things people might otherwise not consider e.g. I clocked (pun intended) the clock times, the spiders, the boy didn't die straight away, the light path, the counsellor, and the music playing. Sorry for spoilers. Maybe some of these will be explained in future episodes too.

Stayed up very late last night binging this!

Thought it was brilliant, really enjoyed it and was something teen dd and I both loved.

My issue is with not really understanding why Els language is so underdeveloped, I can see that growing up in a lab would have meant some language delay but for an intelligent girl it seems excessive given she wasn't bought up in complete isolation.

Not sure if we're allowed to talk about the final episode but I had sort of figured out how it was all going to tie together.

Poor Hopper, how much bad luck can one man have?!!

Yes to disliking Mike, dd and I both disliked him intensely. He never was a likeable character but he was a child before so it was more forgivable! Now he's just horrible.

I'm assuming Will is gay, him liking El would be too awkward.

I seem to be in the minority here but I'm not really enjoying this season (watched eps 1 and 2 so far and not sure if I'll continue.) Possibly because I'm not a horror fan and it seems to be all horror set pieces with a story that seems a bit confused. And I don't like how they've changed Robin's personality (my favourite character last season). In fact, several characters seem to have changed a lot in the months they've been away!

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 29/05/2022 10:13

I thought Will was gay given what Mike said to him last season and its Mike he likes. Though don't know why he has been horrible really. He wasnt that likeable before but even less this season.

Just thru Epis1-2 so far.

I like watching the show for nostalgia: my youth, D&D, the clothing & hair styles. Heck even the skating. No one at school flagging Elle as peculiar rings true, she's called Jane for heaven's sake, nobody my generation is called Jane, and American schools are probably still terrible at recognising what bullying is. The media news hysteria over D&D is true enough.

However, The scenes with Elle being very publicly bullied (Epis1-2) narked me. I was there. Yes there was bullying nastiness but it was quiet pointed remarks and maybe bits of violence, although much less violence towards girls. Not at that kind of public overt adult-supporting the bullying. The scenes showed 9-10yr old behaviour out of adult sight, not what 14-15 yr olds would do in 1986 with adult colluders and no other kids intervening. Angela wouldn't have taken time to even speak to Elle. It doesn't make sense. Anyone recall Heathers ? Any precious popular girls weren't all that liked, plenty of allies to find against them!

ok, I know it's D&D / magical realisim. But I had to leave room for those scenes.

The haunted house (only seen it in trailers) is straight out of Adams Family, isn't it?!

To be honest Will should have gone off Mike the minute he saw that outfit and hairdo he rocks up to California in. Plenty of nice boys in California to fancy instead of Mike with his bad haircut and bad attitude!

Yes to Robin’s character. In series 3 she was quite snarky, sarcastic, likes to make fun of Steve and seems quite together. In this one she’s developed this socially awkward bizarre personality that she didn’t have at all before?

Anyone else thinking the lad playing mike was painfully thin? His sister too. Hope there's not some eating disorders blossoming.

Report
ellebelli · 29/05/2022 18:26

When Mike was in his White Vest and Y-Fronts in the first ep,He did look terribly thin.
Nancy has always been very slight, I think she is very pretty.
El and Joyce look so similar.

Report
Pinkbonbon · 29/05/2022 18:32

Id imagine the Nancy actress has to be strict on her diet to stay thin because she playing a younger character. I mean it could be metabolism of course. And teen boys can get really skinny. Especially when they leave home for uni that first year. But he just looked worryingly thin to me. Wouldn't be surprised if it comes out a few years down the line that the stress of the show and fame at a young age caused eating disorders and other mental health issues amongst a lot of the cast.

Finn Wolfhard is a model, doesn’t really surprise me he is so thin- sadly that’s the environment.

I binged the whole series and absolutely loved it. I’m a massive horror fan so wasn’t put off by that (although there was one particular scene I hid behind my pillow- think Hopper and his feet)
Absolutely loved some of the new characters- Dmitri being a particular fave! Jamie Campbell Bower was fantastic, I cannot wait for July!

We're bingeing tonight. We had to resist on Friday and Saturday because, work. But we're on half hols now, got the popcorn, got the Doritos, got the Dorito sauce, got the haribos. The boy has got his stranger things pyjamas on, I've turned the lights on in the stranger things Lego house and strapped myself into the fat.
It's on, it's on like donkey kong.

Random question. Am starting it again with DD1. We are watching the pep rally in ep 1. What is the name of the song played by the school band? I have googled unsuccessfully
