Disliked most of the first episode (dislike horror). The opening sequence in the lab was disturbing.

Erica and Steve/Robin’s friendship were the only highlights.

The overt bullying of El, Eddie behaving ‘weirdly’ and the ‘sad cheerleader victim’ were too stereotypical.

The actor playing the new character Eddie looks way too old to be playing an 18yo, even compared with the actors playing the other older teens.

I'm sure in the cafeteria scene he was saying he's going to walk the stage, get his diploma and flip the bird at the teachers, and his friend said "didn't you say that last year and the year before?". I'm taking that as he's repeating high school again for the third time; hence the age?

I get proper mummy vibes from that creepy thing!!!

Two episodes in and enjoying it. They’ve definitely gone big on the horror.

I actually said that he looks like he’s in his 30s just before the bit about him graduating
finally. do they really let them stay in school a few years without graduating? I can live with the kids all looking a bit too old, but they could have cast new characters at around the right age.

To be fair the actor is 29. And presumably if he’s been held back a year or two he’s the same age as Steve, who is also played by a 29 year old. But yeah he looks old for a high schooler because he’s almost thirty!

Kanaloa · 28/05/2022 11:25

I guess part of the issue with casting new characters at the same age would be that if they cast an actual 18 year old to play Eddie he would then be younger than other cast members playing 14 year olds.

End of episode 2- Mike is horrid. What a Ln entitled unsupportive BF. Poor Elle.

The actor playing Jason looks and sounds a lot like Tom Cruise. I wonder if that's a deliberate casting intent. If you close your eyes and listen to him speaking you would assume it's a Cruise film from the 80s you are watching, and not Stranger Things.

Just finished the first episode. Bit of a mish mash and finding it hard to determine any storyline(s) at the moment tbh.

Thought the first season was amazing, and the second season was too. Third season (for me) fell flat. I found it hard to stay with it, as there seemed to be too many 'main characters.' (Around 15 I think!) With too many storylines/too much going on.

And now - in addition to the main characters from the first 2 seasons, AND the ones added in season 3, we have more new characters - incl 'Chrissy,' and the catty Regina George type cheerleader, Eddie Munson, and Erica (the girl 'nerd,) etc etc.

So hopefully, THIS season isn't going to be the same. (A challenge to watch.) Will stick with it. (For now.)

I couldn’t put my finger on who he reminded me of, but he’s got that 80s heartthrob look.

Watched up to episode 4 and not impressed so far.

See how it goes.

Watched two episodes with DC last night. I thought it was good, but I covered my eyes on a couple of occasions, it's possible that I'm just a wimp about these things, though.

DC is a teenager, to add.

Yay a thread! DD15 managed to binge watch it without me so very pleased I have Mumsnet for company. Hope it is ok to join. I'm three and a bit episodes in and totally enjoying it so far. I'm such a wuss I've never watched horror so missed all these horror references.

Definitely finding it more graphic (ie violence type stuff) than previous series. Don’t remember anything as violent in previous ones except the traditional once per series Steve beat down. And even then it was never graphic the way it is this series! Enjoying it though, although I still think the episodes are a bit too long and things are a bit too scattered out. In the first series you just had the adults, the teens, and the kids, which worked well, but right now everyone seems to be all over the place and they’re struggling to keep it tightly together.

I agree it was very dark and violent compared to previous series. That ending was pretty difficult to watch.

SPOILERS, etc:

I'm interesting in some of the little details in that opening episode, though.
El's comment about Will acting weird because he might like a girl felt like it might have been both foreshadowing and misdirection - not just any girl, but possibly El (and being El she doesn't see it)? Which makes me wonder what will Mike's visit stir up, especially when Will finds out all his friends back in Hawkins have all gone back to playing D&D as soon as he left. Poor guy, that's all he wanted to do last season while the rest of them were dating each other...

I am also wondering about this different, darker view of El and what happened back at the facility. I've not rewatched 1-3 - was what she'd actually done known at all in any of the earlier series?

I mean I didn’t see it as foreshadowing that he likes El. This is what I meant about them setting up a story I don’t think they’ll follow through on - I presumed Will was/is gay. I think it’s been hinted at and set up but I don’t know if Netflix will commit to it.

Report
RayonSunrise · 28/05/2022 17:54

...mind you the misdirection could just be Will liking a girl. Wasn't there a lot of fan interest during the last series in Will being gay?

Yeah its defo Mike he likes. You can see how hurt he was that mike didn't keep in touch much.

Anyone notice the 'I'm not a hero' foreshadowing from the guy the leads the hellfire club? (To steve) Thinking that might play in at some point. Just hoping that if any major self sacrifice happens, it's him and not Steve. Cause otherwise ill totally cry.

Ha, cross-posted. Yes, it would make sense for the writers to pick up on the fan interest. They'll have to follow through for him in some way, though - people get really angry if they feel like they're being baited.

Well this is the problem. They’re setting it up but I can see them wimping out at the last minute to be honest. But they’ve been hinting and hinting since the first series - even in the very first episode we know that Will is bullied by school kids (and his own dad) because they think he’s gay. But I can see them just heavily hinting/moving away at the last minute.

That is a fair point though about in the first ep there was a comment about will liking someone. I was looking about wondering what guy it could be.

Glad it wasn't just me looking about. But, tbh, the El theory works too.

I’ve just finished episode 4 and am loving it so far. The scene at the end of Ep 4, which centred around Max and had ‘Running Up That Hill’ playing, was completely gripping! I actually had goosebumps….. a great piece of cinematography.

It’s very dark, gory and scary though… more than previous series.

I’m pausing to watch Champion’s League final (being a big LIverpool fan!).

DD12 was so excited for the new season but we’ve just watched the first episode and it was way too horrific for her. Well, she loved it but I’m not comfortable with it.

I know the series is rated 15 but she’s always watched it with me and has been fine with it and has watched other 15/scarier films but she’s never seen horror like that. I would rate E1 an 18 for sure.

Can someone who’s binged the rest of S4 let me know if that level of horror continues throughout?
