Can't find a thread for stranger things 4...anyone else impatiently waiting for Friday? Grin

I think it's harder to watch because of the violence that is how humans are cruel and sadistic to other humans. Far more upsetting and stomach turning that the actions of a supernatural monster.

I think I missed many "shout outs" to 80s horror. I haven't seen so much of it (wasn't something I liked back then and have only watched a few since). Only one I got was Silence of the Lambs (which was very obvious if you know that film!!)

Seriously disappointed with season 4 so far, all that stuff with Hopper and the Russians just feels so out of place. It feels like a completely different show now and not in a good way.

The hopper stuff was a bit rubbish tbh

ellebelli · 17/06/2022 14:17

Yeah I could have done without the hopper stuff and Murray this season annoyed more than amused me.
Didn't like them all being split up either.
Plus thr show gave me an ear worm for bloody weeks!...goes off humming Kate Bush

clpsmum · 17/06/2022 15:34

I'm hoping that will all come back together in the last two episodes. It was weird them being split up all over the place

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 17/06/2022 15:39

Yeah the Russia stuff was too prolonged and at a lot of it pointless in the end anyway.

I'm not sure I believe that Murray would have put himself in so much danger for Joyce and Hopper anyway. He's only known them a year or so, it seems a bit of a stretch that he'd risk his life for them.

Kanaloa · 17/06/2022 16:12

I think they filled the time they had. So basically padded out really overlong episodes with a bunch of dragged out filler. It made a lot of the episodes boring for me. Appreciate not everyone felt like that though! But it felt like they were given movie length episodes but didn’t have content to fill it, so just did really long bits that didn’t really come to anything in the end.

Especially given that when we’re introduced to this character he’s living in a super secure bunker with about a million locks on the door. Plus Joyce risking her life, doing a bunker, and leaving the kid she spent the first two seasons protecting frantically (and she knows has no other parent to actually care for them) seemed a bit confusing.

Kanaloa · 17/06/2022 16:17

In addition to the hopper/Russia stuff, I felt the same about the whole repeated time loop of the lab. I thought it was a bit dull.

Does anyone else think the show overall moved away from the interesting concept though? For me the clever/interesting thing about it is their obsession in s1 with it being ‘the Russians.’ The whole time they obsess over it being the Russians when in fact the people they had to be afraid of were fellow Americans (quite literally) in their own backyard! It was the people of their own small town who were doing this. It was like a clever little nod to 80s America’s fears versus the real problems. Then s3 came and it was… the Russians. It just felt like they’d fallen into the silly stereotype they were poking fun at.

whenwillthemadnessend · 17/06/2022 16:21

Crikey reading this I feel some of you are far too deep. Mike is playing a what 14/15 year old.

He is a rubbish bf because he is 14/15
They are Clueless. Out of sight out of mind! What would
You expect?

He is super skinny cos he has been growing faster than his body can put on weight and he is obviously going to be tall.
Many boys have a really bambi gangly stage Just normal

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 17/06/2022 16:30

I agree kanaloa I also thought there's no way Murray would have drunk the mad Russians coffee!! I kept expecting him to wake up as he was faking being drugged.

I also don't really understand why Eleven needed to relive the trauma of the massacre and why Papa would think that's a good idea?!

Anyway I know it's not meant to be believable and I still love it! Can't wait until the 1st of July 😁

Rollergirl11 · 17/06/2022 16:39

Hey @Girliefriendlikespuppies 👋 my take on it is that they need Eleven to remember what happened with 001 and relive the trauma in order to regain her powers (remember that she needs to use a memory that makes her sad and angry) so she can fight Vecnor. She’s the only one powerful enough to put a stop to him.

xsquared · 19/06/2022 14:29

Watched the final episode for the second time last night and here are my thoughts and theories.

SPOILERS WARNING

There were many clues to Vecna's identity in Victor's Creel's story. On the second viewing, I noticed that Henry remained calm or was not in view when the murders were happening. The poor dead animals too.

Sadly, I think pp saying Vecna could be El's father are right, after Henry told El that Brenner wanted to recreate him, by starting a program and others were born. This means he killed all his "children".

There is a theory going round that Steve may get killed off. 🥺 It may be the reason why there's renewed chemistry between them, but I think it's cruel to get Team Steve's hopes up!

I think it should be Eddie that goes. He doesnt quite fit in the rest of the party. I can't see Joseph Quinn staying another season and was already surprised to see him on Stranger Things in the first place!

END OF SPOILERS

ImNotYourHunHun · 19/06/2022 17:46

I've said to DH since the start of S4 that I think Murray will be the one to die this season.

*Possible spoiler
*
I think he will somehow sacrifice himself to get Joyce and hopper back to Hawkins or California.

I swear to the fluffy cat gods that Steve better be fine!!!

CanofCant · 19/06/2022 17:48

I'll be livid if anything untoward happens to Steve! 😄

Kanaloa · 19/06/2022 18:22

I think it would have to be Steve or someone ‘big’ to be satisfying though. If they kill off someone like Eddie it will just feel cheap/dull because he really hasn’t had a lot of development. It will feel lazy (to me anyway!) like a cheap shot for audience sadness.

I think they probably will kill Eddie though, and make it a big dramatic moment as if we’re supposed to care about him when he’s a relatively minor character who has had little effort put into his development. I think they have struggled a bit with character development this series overall just because there are so so so many characters. A lot of them could basically lift right out. And then for some reason they decided the best way to combat that was add in new characters!

Kanaloa · 19/06/2022 18:24

Although I will say I don’t think Steve and Nancy should get back together. She left you for a guy who took secret underwear pictures of both of you when you weren’t aware. That still creeps me out to this day and it’s never been brought up since.

Claymorekick · 19/06/2022 23:22

Just finished watching this and not sure if I imagined something that Hopper said in his monologue to Enzo. I can't find any discussion about it but it seems totally relevant. Haven't gone back and watched it though. So potential spoiler....

He definitely mentioned about babies being born with 'crooked broken limbs and eyes popped out' but not sure if that was a reference to a previous baby of his or those of his army colleagues as a result of dealing with the chemicals. But surely the fact the babies were born with the same conditions that Vecnas murder victims has to be relevant??

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 20/06/2022 10:32

Oooh interesting clay. I wonder if they could tie it into the exposure to chemicals some how. Although Victor was born before the Vietnam war.

I've seen something about the actor was plays Eddie saying he'll be annoyed if he's not back for series 5 so I don't think he does.

I think Murray probably will, possibly Steve although there will be an outcry if so!!

I agree re Jonathan being a creep, spying on people and taking peeping Tom photos is gross. He also nearly killed Steve when he beat him up. And now he's a stoner, what a catch 🤨

CounsellorTroi · 20/06/2022 10:50

Charlie Heaton who played Jonathan is English and grew up on a council estate in Yorkshire. He has done incredibly well for himself.

Rollergirl11 · 20/06/2022 11:37

There is one thing I don’t understand. When 001 is telling his backstory to Eleven he says about his parents doing dreadful things and then you see a flashback to Victor sat in a chair with a cradle (I assume with a baby in it) burning in the fireplace. I think we also saw that image in someone’s nightmare? Potentially Max? So are we to assume that his parents killed a baby?

Slowgrowingelm · 20/06/2022 12:05

@Rollergirl11 victor retells an event that occurred when he was in the war, he okeyed a bomb being dropped on a house. He thought the house contained the enemy. It didn’t. He walked in to see the baby burning in its cot. He tells the girls this when they visit him in the asylum.

@whenwillthemadnessend I’m with you! I’m loving this season but reading this thread it feels like some people are treating it like Shakespeare. But then I’m loving Eddie (reminds me of my college years) and the storylines in general.

ImNotYourHunHun · 20/06/2022 12:13

@Slowgrowingelm please correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't 001 tell 011 that he didn't actually kill the baby in the crib and he actually made him see that but it didn't actually happen? (Does that make sense?)

I've used actually quite a lot haha!!

ImNotYourHunHun · 20/06/2022 12:14

I actually got distressed at that scene the first time you see if when victor is telling the girls as I've got a newborn baby so it really upset me. Then when we saw the same scene again on ep7 is when it's explained it was just a vision that 001 made his dad see and it didn't actually happen. Still really cut me deep though! Horrible sound of the baby screaming

Slowgrowingelm · 20/06/2022 12:22

But wasn’t it a vision he made his dad see over and over because he (001) found it in his father’s memories? So the event actually happened, Victor never mentions it to anyone because of the shame and guilt etc but his son, 001 found it in his fathers head anyway? I seem to recall him saying that he found it in his fathers memories, in one episode…but then I do also vaguely recall 001 saying it didn’t happen 😂I’m going to have to watch it again! Either way he’s an evil little so and so…
