Can't find a thread for stranger things 4...anyone else impatiently waiting for Friday? Grin

@ImAvingOops POSSIBLE SPOILER: the events with 001 occur in the years before we meet Elle in season 1. That’s why we don’t see any other children in the lab in the first season. Elle has continued training on her own and that is where we first meet her. Something must happen in 1983 whereby she opens the portal again and escapes the lab that same day. I think a previous poster noted the events with 001 occurred around 1979. Also I suspect girleifriendlikespuppies is right is suggesting that 001 has been biding his time in the upside down after being banished there (1979-ish) and was waiting for someone to reopen the portal (Elle again in ‘83-ish). That may be part of why the upside down is stuck in ‘83. I don’t think I’ve given too much away there but I added the spoiler alert just in case!

I loved this season can't wait for the final two episodes.

Did find it a bit weird that the main characters were split up all over the place though and the stuff with hopper got
On my nerves a bit

ImAvingOops · 05/06/2022 10:51

Thanks @Slowgrowingelm

Have just managed to catch up on all this today. Overall I actually really loved it, far more than I was expecting to (wasn't that impressed by season 3).

Loved the horror elements and the more darker tone in general. I adored the backstory this season.

I agree though how several of the characters are seeming like spare parts now with no real relevance to anything. Robin and Will being glaring examples, and even Mike, although I predict he will come into play more in the last two episodes of this season.

Actually it is interesting how they're being a bit less subtle about Will's sexuality and crush on Mike now, though whether they'll actually confirm it by the end remains to be seen. I can just see Will getting even more forlorn. Come on Will, you can do better than Mike, he's a rubbish boyfriend anyway.

Not keen on the blatant hinting at Steve and Nancy that seems to have appeared out of nowhere this series not just because Steve is mine. I just don't really like the idea of them together anymore; she and Jonathan had so much more chemistry. Actually Jonathan's another character they've done sod-all with this season.

I love Dustin, he makes me laugh so much. And Max has been brilliant. There was probably other stuff I wanted to mention but I've forgotten now. Gutted we have to wait until July for the rest!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 06/06/2022 08:18

I'm hoping Brenner gets his comeuppance, it was sadistic what he did to those children and I always feel sorry for Els mum who she seems to have forgotten about he is a terrible human being.

I also wonder if he knows it was 001 who was responsible for the massacre? Or if he genuinely thinks El did it?

Figgygal · 07/06/2022 08:45

I did enjoy the series particularly concluding the story as to who Vecna was, how it tied to Eleven and what happened at the lab, the older teens and the whole of episode 4.
I am also quite on board with Steve and Nancy he is great and was obvious he has never quite got over her.
But
Joyce/Murray/Hopper was ludicrous and I did find myself forwarding through some of it.
Mike/Jonathan/Will just disappeared the last couple of episodes not that anything they were doing was of interest really.

Having the groups so spread out and their own individual “missions” didn’t do it for me they were too separated for too long.
Looking forward to Part 2 being released but even that seems a strange decision given they have released 7 and holding back just 2 even if they are looooong.

Slowgrowingelm · 07/06/2022 08:55

Is that Netflix trying to keep subscribers as long as possible though? Or the brother’s decision?

Kanaloa · 07/06/2022 10:37

Or maybe to keep the show on the top 10 for longer. Some shows on Netflix do that, spread the episodes out to make them stay on top for longer - in binge culture people watch them so quickly they fall down the top 10.

I was just saying to DH the other night about how TV watching has changed even in my lifetime. We were talking about a Disney plus marvel programme Hawkeye, and how even though the actual programme was only so-so, it was weirdly nice and nostalgic to go back to watching something weekly. Of course I know you could just say ‘right stranger things is out, I’ll watch one per week on a Friday’ but who would really do that? And you’d find out spoilers and by the time you’d finished nobody would be talking about it anymore. Nowadays it seems much more common to binge TV shows and watch them all at once.

ellebelli · 07/06/2022 10:41

I actually like to watch weekly just so I can come on threads like this to discuss it,that isn't quite the same when it's a show with all episodes available.
However I love watching several eps a night with wine and crisps...(does get a bit confusing stopping mid episode and the wine doesn't help!haha)

I can't remember what happened with El's mum. Didn't she find her in a previous season?

Possible spoiler below:

I think he does know that it was 001 that killed them all. That's why she's back in the lab, as she is the only one who is powerful enough to defeat him.

Redcrayons · 07/06/2022 16:01

Finished it at the weekend. I loved It. the last two episodes were brilliant, proper edge of your seat stuff. and it was really gory in some places.

I really enjoyed the Hawkins stuff, they were all great, especially Max. The Vecna bit was amazing.

the California bit, was OK. Is it wrong to be cheering when El smacked the mean girl? Shame we didn’t see more of this.

Russia plot, I could have easily done with a lot less of this. No way would they keep him alive to have him killed by one of the guards, so it seemed a bit pointless for it to go on so long. We know he’s going to escape so just get on with it.

The lab stuff was horrifying, but good.

im a bit annoyed that they are holding back two more episodes. If they were going to do that, they should have dropped it on a weekly basis.

ImAvingOops · 07/06/2022 16:15

I was happy when El smacked the mean girl too!

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 07/06/2022 17:01

Aside from the fact it's all so brilliantly unbelievable I think a pp had a good point that it's highly unlikely everyone at the skate rink would have joined in tormenting Ell and that she wouldn't have found her new geek tribe purely on the basis - speaking from experience here - outcasts often drift to each other to form an alliance.

It was so hard to watch the bullying Sad

Apparently the guidance councillor is wearing a clock necklace? I'm going to watch her scenes again as she's clearly a wrong 'un. I wonder if she's almost a scout for Vecchna?

Me too. I felt a certain amount of satisfaction then.

Fml1980 · 07/06/2022 17:55

If you watch back to season 3 esp episode 2 you can hear the clock chime quite a lot.

ImAvingOops · 08/06/2022 07:09

The clip went by too fast but I think the piano in Vechna's house had Krueger written on it, as the brand.

Pinkbonbon · 08/06/2022 07:55

RollingInTheDeepSouth · 03/06/2022 08:20

I loved it. There were flaws and less preferred bits as others have said, but overall I enjoy stranger things so much, it is a love letter to the 80s.

What do you think was the significance of the upside down being stuck in the past, on the day Will disappeared? 🤔

Maybe because Will was the one who imagined up the demigorgon?

My feeling is that the upside down is created by people's (maybe childrens) thoughts, fears and imagination in the real world.

So the kids playing dnd actually created the demogorgon. And maybe Elles fear and horror at what number 1 had done, transformed him in into a boogeyman. But he wasn't a fully formed idea until the dnd game gave him a name...that's why he has only just shown up.

Or something along those lines xD

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 08/06/2022 09:20

Interesting theory pink I always thought is this just their imaginations as the upside down characters are so similar to D&D.

Els mum had her brain fried by Brenner as she kept looking for El. She was left unable to speak or function.

El did find her in series 2 and her mum showed her telekinetically what had happened. I think Els aunt was going to ring the authorities about El so El left but afaik she never gave her mum a second thought again.

In theory El should have gone to live with her aunt and mum when Hopper vanished.

I agree that El would have found a little group of misfit friends at school and that not everyone would have joined in on the bullying.

clpsmum · 09/06/2022 19:02

Great theory pink

NohoHank · 09/06/2022 19:28

Does anyone think it could be possible that Henry Creel/001/Vecna is Eleven's real father?

ISaySteadyOn · 09/06/2022 19:47

Ooh! There's an idea. I like it. Especially as both their powers run mostly to telekinesis. Poor Eleven though if true.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 09/06/2022 22:24

Age wise would that work with her mums age? He looked younger.

It's a very interesting idea though.

Kanaloa · 09/06/2022 23:31

He was a kid of 10/11 in the 50s though wasn’t he? So must he a fair enough age to have a daughter even if he’s a bit young. I think he seems younger though because other people the same age as the actor are playing 17/18 year olds in the show!

strugglingspmua · 10/06/2022 10:56

Just watched first couple of episodes ! Brilliant - best series so far imo

It's a very interesting idea though.

He's 39 in 1979 when turned into Vecna so a reasonable age to be her dad. I'm guessing all the children at the lab have got their powers from him somehow, but not fathered by him. I'm not sure if El was the only one born with her powers.
