Heavens!

No … I don’t think ‘involved in terrorism’ was what was in my mind - more that throughout the Troubles there seemed to be (in both fact and fiction) numerous reasons why people (particularly those at the start of adult life) might prefer not to remain in NI. The political situation spilling over into social pressures, job prospects, stress - all sorts of things making permanent or temporary migration the best option.

JacquelineCarlyle · 02/05/2022 10:49

The age gap between the girls has bothered be a bit too as I agree with pp that in reality, they'd likely have 4 DCs.

That said, I've assumed secondary fertility problems rather than anything sinister as they're a decent family just trying to make their best way in life. The granda hindering their sex life is probably more realistic though!

Limer · 02/05/2022 12:06

The big age gap I attributed to them being very careful with the Vatican Roulette, but not quite careful enough a couple of years ago!

Still loving this third series, each episode so far is fantastic.

BlueSpottedGiraffe · 02/05/2022 13:03

Not sure if anyone else has seen but channel 4 have announced there is going to be an extended length special set around the GFA referendum.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 02/05/2022 22:46

I think Mary had to marry Jerry because Mary was pregnant with Erin, in the first series Jerry mentions they've been married 16 years when Erin was 16.

I think for whatever reason no more babies came along and the baby was a surprise bday after they'd assumed it wasn't going to happen.

I do wonder what the deal with Orla's dad is? Who is never mentioned.

I definitely over think Derry Girls though 😂

TottersBlankly · 02/05/2022 23:15

I don’t think it’s overthinking!

In real life things do happen ‘for whatever reason’ - but in a carefully plotted and scripted show the audience is bound to assume that everything on screen is being shown for a particular reason.

It’s strange and intriguing. The baby was tiny when Erin was 16, yes? If it were hers there’d be every reason not to broadcast an underage pregnancy and for everyone to pretend it was her own mother’s child. Religion / birth control / lack of access to abortions could be another facet of the political situation that the writer might have wanted to explore. Without direct reference to it until the final series. Maybe.

But you’d only do that - as writer - if you knew from the beginning that you would be getting three seasons …

🤔

TottersBlankly · 02/05/2022 23:21

I’d say the baby would be more likely to belong to away-with-the-fairies Orla - but she’s not the narrator / star so less likely to be the focus of the biggest revelation. (If it is.)

I also wonder if Orla’s father is not around ‘for whatever reason’, or for the purposes of a ‘big reveal’.

I don’t think the baby is Erin’s. I think she was included to make them look more of a ‘family’ rather than a bunch of adults. It makes it more natural looking, but without the stress of hiring actors aged 4-11, who are harder to work with because they’d need to have lines/sort schooling/have proper ‘characters.’ It also gives a reason for Mary to always be at home, because she’s with the baby. I think in that way the baby acts as a convenient prop without being too strenuous in terms of writing.

I mean a big part of Erin’s character is how awkward she is. She writes in her diary that she’s never even kissed anyone, can’t flirt with the boys at the residential camp thing, etc.

PlasticineMeg · 03/05/2022 06:25

Exactly @Kanaloa

This thread has taken a weird turn - Erin having a baby as a child (they were 15, just entering year 11 in episode 1) and it never being mentioned and swept under the carpet is way too dark for this of a series.

OverByYer · 03/05/2022 06:42

Nicola Mccoughlin was at the Met Gala looking fabulous. Good for her , enjoying her success.

Redcrayons · 03/05/2022 08:18

I couldn’t work out where the baby came from. Has it been in other episodes and I’ve never noticed?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 03/05/2022 08:21

Yes! From the start of series 1.

Somatronic · 03/05/2022 09:01

I have always enjoyed the running joke of the baby being in every episodes but never being acknowledged.

I agree it's unusual for a Catholic family of that time to only have 2 children and with such a huge age gap but it's a comedy show so no need to overthink it.

FromOurHatsToOurFeet · 03/05/2022 14:17

Have you listened to the Talking Derry Girls podcast? They talk about this sort of thing. There's also a couple of episodes with Lisa McGee herself.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 03/05/2022 17:47

Mary does work though? I think her Dad (Grandda) looks after the baby when Mary and Jerry are at work, it kind of gives him a purpose and usefulness in living with them. He is always the one holding the baby and looking after it, Erin never even acknowledges her!

I definitely do not think the baby is Erin or Orlas.

I agree it was probably just easier to have a baby who needs to just be there rather than a child who would have lines to learn! In rl all of them would have lots of siblings and cousins but that would make the group a bit too big.

OverByYer · 03/05/2022 21:33

Wow they packed a lot into that episode!
loved the kiss, looks like they are letting the characters grow up.
the psychic was funny too and the house mix up

JacquelineCarlyle · 03/05/2022 21:34

I was roaring with laughter during the first half. Loved it! (Again - I've loved them all so far!)

5566rfghh · 03/05/2022 21:53

I'm so confused about the razor!!! What exactly happened at the very end?

There was some hilarious bits in this episode though!

midsomermurderess · 03/05/2022 21:55

Conleth Hill is always good value.

The psychic spoke about the secret being in a box under the water or something similar. So when he poured the water he checked under the sink.
earlier in Da had been asking why Ma hasn’t told him where she’d put his razor before she died and he hadn’t been able to find it.

5566rfghh · 03/05/2022 22:33

Ya I got that, but she'd been dead 10 years, surely someone would have been under the sink since then 🤣.

Titterofwit · 03/05/2022 22:59

Im loving this series. Loved them all and have watched the first 2 series several times each. I have laughed out loud(watching on my own) and love the local references just slotted into conversation.

I am aware of the actors ages but dont let that affect my enjoyment of the storyline. In fact I would probably not like it as much if the actors were 15-17

But... I would probably love it just as much with the adults and no teenagers. I could listen to Joe and Jerry all day and as for Sr Michael !

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 03/05/2022 23:21

I thought the ending with the razor was really sweet.

Also the psychic mentioned it would be in a red box

VenusStarr · 04/05/2022 09:02

Ah, I enjoyed that episode, I laughed a lot. I thought James and Erin liked each other when he picked her up for prom, so I'm pleased that they picked that thread up again.
Sister Michael in the delorean 😂
