I really enjoyed that episode. I was soooo slow to get the significance of the game they were playing on the train. I loved the bit about the pack of Tayto😀

I did like most of this episode. Definitely find the elders funnier than the girls. I laughed more in the episode than the other 2.
But the kit kat storyline was a rip off of Rhod Gilbert's sandwich sketch.
Even though Claire was hardly in it, she was So animated, it's really off-putting.

OverByYer · 26/04/2022 23:25

I thought it was funny. Not recognising their neighbour was funny.

I'm going to persist and watch the series to the end, but the adults are the only reason I'm watching now. I don't know why I find the teens so embarrassing to watch -I didn't through the first two series. The acting seems very secondary school drama club production; this could obviously be the material they are working with but it just doesn't have the real feeling from the other series. It reminds me a bit of the last series of the Royle Family where the quality dropped and it all got a bit unbelievable and that real life charm was lost.

Samcro · 27/04/2022 08:06

last night was funny.
loved it when the girl put on that balaclava

TottersBlankly · 27/04/2022 08:50

I enjoyed last night’s. I acknowledge that the drama was neither original nor strong enough to fully justify itself but

the entire gang racing from one platform to another was incredibly true to (my) life,

the excruciating embarrassment and social difficulty of not remembering someone was beautifully done. (If they dialled down the gurning and silliness I’d be quite happy with a show starting just Ma and Aunt Mary - who I adore.)

I liked the surreal toothbrush / banana stand-off,

and felt very worried for the ex-prisoner former neighbour who was clearly already in a lot of trouble.

What was the significance of the board game?

Breathmiller · 27/04/2022 09:59

Although I get some of the issues, especially the over acting from Claire and Erin, I'm enjoying these. I agree that Ma and the Aunt are hilarious. As are the interactions with the dad and grandad.

I didn't get the significance straight away of the game but thought it was funny when I did.

totters it was Guess Who? Then playing guess who the neighbour* *was.

Orla cracks me up.

Agree re Claire. I can almost feel her spit when she is talking and spluttering all over the place.
I don't really mind Erin's over acting too much as it feels a bit teenager but Claire drives me mad.

Orla is hilarious.

Agree that the grown ups are the stars of this series.

I am from NI - I often wonder how people not from here even fully get some of the references.

SirChenjins · 27/04/2022 10:44

Loved loved loved last night’s episode - and where the hell was Sister Michael going?! Too much of that woman is a mystery.

TottersBlankly · 27/04/2022 11:34

Oh of course! I wondered if there was some political reference.

Sister Michael is majestic. I want to be her. Not teaching self-absorbed schoolgirls, but I want her flawlessly pretty face and imperiously scornful expression and general don’t give a fuck-ness.

And she despises the French.

SirChenjins · 27/04/2022 12:00

Sister Michael is my inner voice. Fortunately in RL I present a much nicer persona so I don’t get fired, reported to HR, disowned by my family or left without friends but she says what I’m thinking 99% of the time.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 27/04/2022 15:08

Maybe I'm just very easily pleased but I've loved all three episodes so far. I don't care that the actors are far older than the girls. That's been the case from the start and it's part of what makes me laugh.

EarringsandLipstick · 27/04/2022 16:55

Just watched the latest episode.

I'm so disappointed. Hopes of it improving have faded now.

I thought it was so unfunny, the teenagers look completely ridiculous, the only part-amusing bit was Ma Mary & the unknown friend. Which was only ok.

I have read Lisa McGee saying this was the most challenging series so far. I feel she simply ran out of storylines & comic lines. It's such a pity, I have watched & rewatched the other series, and think they are both hilarious & touching. This is such a tawdry series in comparison.

SylviasMotherSaid · 27/04/2022 20:13

The adults are superb and are really carrying this series Claire is just a complete pain in the arse and I cringe whenever she is on screen . It’s watchable but not laugh out loud anymore

MrsJackRackham · 28/04/2022 08:50

The fringes on Sister Michael's shirt may have been a clue, is she a secret Country & Western fan?

FromOurHatsToOurFeet · 28/04/2022 09:46

I wanted to like this one. I'm just wondering if Bridgerton/Covid/broken legs forced too many compromises. So they needed a scene with Sister Michael sitting down and with Clare by herself, and they needed the adults in one carriage/covid bubble/scene and the kids in another. There were moments of mirth but it's definitely lost something along the way from S2 to S3.

Diegofrompennyburn · 28/04/2022 09:53

Oh I laughed out loud at episode 3, but then, being an actual Derry girl maybe I found the Tayto cheese'n'onion and "spot the actual station" bits particularly amusing.

JoanOgden · 01/05/2022 21:52

Episode 3 was quite enjoyable but it (and really the two previous episodes) felt as if they were marking time waiting for the actual story to start.

I do like the baby who appears in every episode but no one ever, ever actually mentions.

TottersBlankly · 01/05/2022 22:29

I wondered about the baby …

I like the way her growth shows the passage of time.

However. Is she there to prove the parents have a sexual relationship, despite the grandfather’s contempt for his SIL?

Or, is she not Ma’s baby? Is the toddler eventually going to scream “You’re not my Ma!” - only for Erin to scream back “Yes, I am!”?

Cleebope2 · 01/05/2022 22:40

Yes the age gap between Erin and the baby bugs me with no more kids in between. Maybe the granda inhibited their sex life all those years. A family like theirs should gave about 4 kids though to be realistic!

TottersBlankly · 02/05/2022 07:27

Given the political background it wouldn’t be surprising if at least one child, probably male, was ‘absent’, for whatever reason, but I’d expect them to be older than Erin. And referred to obliquely through all three series.

The baby can’t be there to explain Ma’s being tethered to the house, not now her husband has agreed to her plans.

Surely she doesn’t just symbolise hope for the future?

EarringsandLipstick · 02/05/2022 07:28

I think there's a lot of over thinking the baby 😂

CliffsofMohair · 02/05/2022 08:18

PlasticineMeg · 26/04/2022 22:20

I’m surprised people didn’t enjoy tonight’s I thought it was brilliant. Loved them being on the wrong platform and the woman that none of them remembered 😂😂

Set to Riverdance music. Cracked me up.

@TottersBlankly what do you mean by “absent” ? Are you actually saying that you wouldn’t be surprised that a Catholic family would have at least one of their male children involved in terrorism? Or were you saying something else?
