I watched a clip on YouTube with the automatic subtitles the other day, it got maybe one word in five Grin

the subtitler needs to go on cultural sensitivity training! Poor Michelle, her vulgarity needs true representation Grin

@MurderAtTheBeautyPageant
I'm not hard of hearing but I've only got a Kindle and a noisy dwelling in the rain so I quite often watch stuff with subtitles on in bad weather I'm so peed off that people get short changed.
I watched something once where someone said "Where is Mary?"
The audio on screen answer was "Mary no longer wishes to live here, she is broken forever and has left for London and will never return"
Subtitles :
"where is Mary?'
"Left for London"
I swear.

I've only had NI Tayto but they're so good! Ironically I know them through army packed lunches (used to work alongside the military, but this is recently). Spare packets never lasted long!

I was so young when this all happened- and England based, but I do have memories of the GFA being signed and memories of maybe two or three years before hand. Mostly snippets of the news- I was very little but I do remember being truly scared of the IRA. Derry Girls has been a lovely nostalgic trip down memory lane in terms of the clothes, the music, the cars & it has also been very poignant and interesting and got me trying to fill gaps in my knowledge and expand on memories that are merely glimpses and names that meant little to a 4,5,6,7 year old beyond recognising them popping up. It really did feel like the 90s though- they nailed it. Erin was old enough to do & wear all the stuff I was much too young for but thought was cool!

Would love a one off episode of baby Anna at the same age, just to see the differences in era and so we could catch up with the gang of course. I'd love to know what everyone got up to- and hopefully see them all more successful than Jenny Joyce.

I wonder if there's a soundtrack based on the series.
I keep meaning to check.

that's shite. It's hard to think of an excuse these days for not providing accurate subtitles!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 21/05/2022 22:54

I've only just caught up with the last two episodes, loved them both and cried loads.

I've learnt loads about the GFA, I didn't even realise it was a referendum Blush

I was confused a bit by the revelation that Michelle had a brother in prison for murder, I feel like that is something that should have been mentioned before.

There was lots of chemistry between Erin and James and hints they were going to get together.

GregBrawlsInDogJail · 22/05/2022 08:18

It didn't especially surprise me. A lot of working class boys got mixed up with the paras because they offered purpose and camaraderie and had money blah blah blah, and also there was fuck all else to do. The same thing that gets teen boys involved with any kind of gang activity really. And the IRA also had a sense of moral purpose and a good deal of funding. Knowing the time and place, it wasn't really hard for me to believe that a) Michelle's brother had got drawn into something that went badly wrong, b) it would be such a source of shame to their family and to Deirdre that it would subsequently never be mentioned.

EarringsandLipstick · 22/05/2022 09:19

That's shocking, even if you are very young.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 22/05/2022 09:26

I don't see why it's shocking. I'm not from NI. I remember the GFA being negotiated and I know it was passed into law. I'd forgotten the exact mechanism by which that happened.

What really is shocking is the wilful refusal of many outside NI to consider how Brexit would affect the GFA during the referendum campaign and for years afterwards. It shouldn't have taken an Einstein to see it was bound to be a particular problem given it's the UK's only land border and the recent political history. And now we see it's at risk. Deeply depressing.

It was such a seismic moment in NI history, and by extension, British-Irish relations, that I would expect anyone on the two islands to remember it & the process.

Obviously, residents of the island of Ireland should remember the referendum as both Northern Ireland & Ireland voted (separate referendums) but I would have expected anyone affected by the process (which should include all of the UK) to know as well.

KarenLovesRosario · 22/05/2022 09:37

@MurderAtTheBeautyPageant
Absolutely, it's understandable if it happens with subtitles on a live event obviously but anything pre recorded ? No feckin excuse at all.

JacquelineCarlyle · 22/05/2022 13:55

It didn't surprise me either @GregBrawlsInDogJail for all the reasons you've mentioned. Thought it was handled perfectly - a very accurate reflection.

KarenLovesRosario · 22/05/2022 16:10

Series 2 now
Best of Sr Michael

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 22/05/2022 17:45

I agree it's shocking but I have never been taught anything about Ireland or Irish history, I would have been a young teen when the GFA happened and would have had no interest in the news.

I think Irish history should be taught in schools, I learnt more watching Derry Girls than I did at school. I almost wonder whether the English are deliberately kept ignorant of a lot of what the English did as it was so bad.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 22/05/2022 17:57

Love the Sr Michael clips. At her acerbic best! The part in the wake episode where she barks 'you're not a tongue person are you? Christ but I can't stand the tongue people' at Gerry. And the bit where she's high listening to Uncle Colm's ramblings! Grin

KarenLovesRosario · 22/05/2022 18:04

@MurderAtTheBeautyPageant
Honestly I absolutely love the bit where she finds Colm's story funny

I’ve often thought something like ‘colonial England’ might be a good module for English history classes. I’m at uni now and did an interesting module on colonial and post colonial literature and it’s amazing how narrow the offerings at college etc seem in comparison if you know what I mean.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 22/05/2022 18:14

The only way the current shower in govt would allow there to be a colonial module on the curriculum if it were to be in a 'yay, for the empire. those were the good old days' kind of way.

KarenLovesRosario · 22/05/2022 18:23

I'm Welsh but spent some of my childhood in schools in England. I'm in my fifties but back then we were definitely not taught any history at all about Wales, Scotland and Ireland/N. Ireland.
Please tell me this has changed someone

Somatronic · 22/05/2022 23:35

The news in Britain was also to blame. I still find BBC coverage of the north of Ireland infuriating sometimes. Basically the coverage was all IRA bad, security forces good, and it seems to me when most Brits think of the northern conflict they think of bombs in England rather than the atrocities in the North or the role of their state forces in murder and terrorism. It's frustrating.

Thanks @FurryBootsBurney

darisdet · 23/05/2022 01:40

We only studied Irish history in British Politics and Govt A' Level.

KarenLovesRosario · 23/05/2022 02:29

Michelle clips !
I think Jamie-Lee has been absolutely floorless throughout the whole series, think she's an amazing natural actor that steals every scene.
"Ya wanna move over there James I can't see past your massive closet" 😂

OverByYer · 23/05/2022 08:39

Just caught up with the hour finale last night. I loved every second- apart from Clare screeching down the phone. It was very emotional to see how much of an impact the referendum had on ordinary folk and what it meant to them to vote. I loved the Orla dancing segment, she is such a joy.
And Sr Michael sipping her whisky all melancholy.
I had a little cry at the end as I have loved this series so much but think it’s come to its natural end.

id like to see a where are they now special though if Lisa can oblige I’m a year or so!
