I agree with what most of you have said, episode two was much better than episode one. But, still not great. I think they’re all just too old now, at a distance you can still sort of fool yourself into believing they’re teenagers, but when the camera pans in, no way.

I agree. It's very hard to suspend disbelief, and even though it's a comedy, it has to be at least semi plausible to be funny.

I wonder why they chose such 'old' actresses? I get that using actual 15 year olds causes lots of legal issues around working hours and the like, but couldn't they have got good actresses just a few years older? A 19 year old actress could pass quite easily for a 15 or 17 year old character, but a 30 year old?

I guess they would say they cast the best actresses they could but the problem is they cast right at the upper end of the plausible age range for series 1, so it's a problem 5 years on. When they filmed series 1 in 2017 the actresses playing Clare and Erin would have been 30 and 23, which was really pushing it, but now they're 35 and 28, which is ludicrous to be playing people getting their GCSE results.

Derry girls is a comedy, trying to compare it to other teen dramas is a bit of a stretch.

I enjoyed the second episode a lot more, they are all a bit old for the roles but I can ignore that. It’s meant to be a bit silly and funny - that’s the point of a comedy!!

GCAcademic · 21/04/2022 16:54

I completely agree with the poster who thought that the context is lacking so far in this series. Removing the backdrop of the Troubles has lost the show that brilliant intertwining of humour and poignancy that worked so well in the previous series. I'm still enjoying it, but not so much, and I think it's probably best that it ends after this series.

Have they? I think it is still there albeit more subtle.
Aunt Sarah mentioning haven't had a riot for awhile.
Highlighting the lack of Catholic officers employed by the PSNI.
The distraught breakdown about exam results.
It was hard enough to get a job as a Catholic in the 90's nevermind without A levels.

I think they've to thread carefully for the audience RL tensions in the communities are still raw.

JacquelineCarlyle · 21/04/2022 23:03

I agree @EmeraldShamrock1 and loved Michelle saying she was sick of peace as it's all anyone goes on about - I remember feeling the same at the time Blush

The troubles were always there - you never needed to consciously think about them for them to be the backdrop to your life.

Ulysses · 22/04/2022 07:43

There was the clip of Mo Mowlam too, so the current affairs of the time are still being referenced.

Cleebope2 · 26/04/2022 18:58

Tonight the girls head to Barry’s funfair. RIP Barry’s! Can’t wait for the nostalgia and to take a wee trip to Curry’s soon!

GraspingSanity · 26/04/2022 21:30

Just watching tonight's episode and it's awful 😖. This series is terrible so far. I've cringed the entire way through, at least there wasn't so much of Claires terrible overacting.

Floralnomad · 26/04/2022 21:32

This is a new low

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 26/04/2022 21:33

I enjoyed tonight’s episode.

“we don’t have hit men, we have provos” was a particular favourite.

JacquelineCarlyle · 26/04/2022 21:33

I loved it. Just wish we'd seen more of Barry's & Portrush & Claire had met up with them!

Mine too!

Cleebope2 · 26/04/2022 21:43

Nicola coughlan had to drop out of some filming due to covid/ Bridgerton rescheduling so this episode was probably rewritten to accommodate that. Still love it but not as funny as first two epidodes.

GraspingSanity · 26/04/2022 21:44

Wtf was the toothbrush and the banana bit! It just feels really tired and try hard. I didn't laugh once and I was such a fan of the first two series. It's very forced. The only saving grace for me are the actors playing the "older" cast like Mary and Gerry and Sister Michael and and Joe.

That makes sense. I'm not a fan of hers but did miss her being in it more!

I laughed out loud at quite a few parts. Mary talking about losing her dishes the same as the provos losing their weapons creased me!

Cleebope2 · 26/04/2022 21:57

The John Wayne Toby jug lol

IcedPurple · 26/04/2022 22:15

The 'stuck in a train in the middle of nowhere' plot line had potential, but it simply didn't work. The stories were too outlandish and silly.

All of the episodes in this series have been duds. Last week's wasn't so bad because it was set in the school, where all the best episodes have been. Comedies generally work best in their own habitat.

PlasticineMeg · 26/04/2022 22:20

I’m surprised people didn’t enjoy tonight’s I thought it was brilliant. Loved them being on the wrong platform and the woman that none of them remembered 😂😂

JacquelineCarlyle · 26/04/2022 22:22

I'm with you @PlasticineMeg Grin

Tigresswoods · 26/04/2022 22:23

Yes I thought the weird Claire storyline was definitely due to Bridgerton!

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 26/04/2022 22:37

I can confirm that the train station used is an actual train station, bridge and all. No local would be on the wrong platform though!

Yes I was just thinking that the other day - that it’s the adults now who are funny.

for some reason tho I found this episode less annoying than the last 3. Probably less Claire

HaggisBurger · 26/04/2022 22:46

Last 2 I mean.
