I've been obsessed with this case since listening to The Fake Heiress on BBC sounds. Is anyone else watching?! I love the casting of Anna.

OP posts:
ThatsNotMyGolem · 22/02/2022 16:48

I can't get my head around how anyone could see the real Anna as any sort of style icon. Her clothes are awful, as is her hair and general look. How did she con anyone that she was an heiress?

DoNotTouchTheWater · 22/02/2022 16:54

I don’t feel sorry for Rachel. She didn’t even end up with any debt - Amex wrote it off for vanity fair. Indeed, she’s making a career out of it.

I don’t think she’s worse than Anna though. Nor do I think portraying her as the villain is reasonable. Anna was a fraudster. She stole and manipulated. That’s beyond any doubt. Rachel was a freeloading wannabe which isn’t the same category in the least.

Giraffesandbottoms · 24/02/2022 19:31

The journalist makes this show borderline unwatchable. I’m 5 episodes in and I don’t think I can keep going because of her.

Tbh I feel quite sorry for Anna. Like actually her concept and her work/execution isn’t stupid. If she had been able to raise the funds I’m sure people would have gone to ADF. It’s pretty amazing/impressive when someone is able to use sheer charisma and personality to get so far, and to hobnob with all those people and make/fake it into the inner circle takes a serious amount of personality and a lot of balls. I mean she’s clearly a sociopath but part of me does admire what she managed to achieve. It’s not like the fyre festival guy who just didn’t put the work in properly so it was fucked. Anna seems to have done the work, it was just blown by not actually receiving the final money/getting the chance to do it.

But I can’t continue because of this gurning and seriously unlikable journalist.

obstacalling · 25/02/2022 13:27

Am i the only one who likes the journalist?

Ok she did overact a bit but her character was
Good. She was driven by her need to salvage her career and regain her credibility and self respect, before she gave birth. I like that angle .

Many people would have sacked Anna off.

I think the ADF was a flop waiting to happen.

MinglingFlamingo · 25/02/2022 13:41

I love the Vivian and her work friends. And her dh seems lovely too

It's Annas accent I can't stand. Can't work out Rachel. Haven't watched the final episode but atm I don't trust the girl Vivian meets up with in Germany as far as I can through her

SoyMarina · 25/02/2022 18:43

I liked the journalist.
Was almost impressed by her lack of interest in her own life, ie pregnancy.
What’s the baby’s name anyone??

BluerThanRobinsEggs · 25/02/2022 19:01

The baby was Maddy, found that out in the last episode.

I liked the journalist. I am so fed up of watching actors whose faces can't move at all!

purplesequins · 25/02/2022 20:19

excellent cast. especially vivien and anna.
brava!

I'm just Shock at how she pulled it off.
and Shockat the interviews she gave after being released from prison.

tokyo1 · 25/02/2022 20:23

I have one episode to go and it's been interesting as it's gone on. But I have to agree. The journalists investment in Anna and the 'I'm here for you' doesn't really make sense considering Anna is awful to her. What is it about her would make her root for her? That narrative just doesn't make any sense. And I've gotten used to the journalists gurning face but it took some time Grin

DoNotTouchTheWater · 25/02/2022 20:27

Yes. The most interesting thing about the whole thing is how someone with absolutely no personal charm or charisma managed all this.

hockeygrass · 25/02/2022 20:37

I'm enjoying it and 4 episodes in but I keep being distracted by the number of actors in the series that I recognise from other shows I watch, so far I have got on my list:
Ozark
Veep
Billions
Succession
Nurse Jackie
The Bold Type

Anyone else thinking the same?

Giraffesandbottoms · 25/02/2022 22:04

I’m all for actresses being able to move their face but there’s movement and then there’s scary gurning level snd bizarre overacting. I also didn’t warm to the vibe that her pregnancy was an inconvenience to her work life. It was all very annoying/didn’t add anything to the plot

alltheapples · 25/02/2022 22:14

She was not "gurning". She was simply able to move her face. Most actresses have botox, so people just forget what normal expressions look like.

MermaidEyes · 26/02/2022 11:40

She was definitely over acting in some scenes. My friends and I are all similar ages to her and none of us have facial movements that are THAT distracting.

Hasselhoffsheadband · 26/02/2022 11:46

DH and I now just can't stop saying 'you're all just baaasic bitches' and 'you're being so dramaaatic' to each other Grin

I really enjoyed this series. And the weird thing is it's still rumbling on now, it's like drama in real time!

I have to say, the character of Vivian did start to grate on me a bit. I get that she was driven by the need to redeem herself and her career but she was a bit OTT at times. And tbe pregnancy story line, where she was constantly groaning, and getting the lawyer to crack her back etc was just annoying!

ESGdance · 26/02/2022 13:15

“Why are you dressed like that? Are you pawwwr?”

Ok but I live in the real world and speak to people every day and no body moves their face in that bizarre fashion.

Also got extreme rage that she left her new baby to pursue this.

I have to say I quite liked Laverne Cox. I found it a bit distracting for 5 mins or so but then I really warmed to the character!

LampLighter414 · 27/02/2022 14:36

It started okay and into the middle. The ending felt ridiculously biased to downplay Anna's crimes. I don't get how they tried to make Rachel look like a bad guy. She was a victim. Also just couldn't relate to why the journalist and lawyer were so obsessed with her and actually cared/worried about her.

I'm glad she got prison. She deserved it.

It's annoying to know, much like the Tinder Swindler, this show will make her more famous and give her the opportunity to make lots of money. She is a criminal, she doesn't deserve it.

purplesequins · 27/02/2022 14:50

no such thing as maternity leave in the us.
very usual for women to go back to work weeks after having a baby.

Giraffesandbottoms · 27/02/2022 15:24

@purplesequins

That’s a great point I hadn’t considered!!!

I don't get how they tried to make Rachel look like a bad guy. She was a victim

I don’t see it like that tbh. She ended up paying for one of the many, many things she had expected for free. She went on that holiday didn’t she? She at least was liable for 1/3 of the costs - hers. She’s a massive taker who used Anna completely. Not sorry for her at all.

The difference between Anna and the tinder swindler is that most of the “victims” of Anna are those banker idiots who simply acted without having done the correctly due diligence. Or hotels who let her get away with not having a card on file. If you don’t follow protocol then this can happen 🤷🏻‍♀️

pondereplay90 · 28/02/2022 08:08

I'm only on episode 7 but Rachel was definitely not a victim. I don't know how it all went down in real life, but in the series she was a user who was happy to go for the most expensive options when someone else was paying for it.

What happened to her was karma for those who expect a free ride on someone else's dollar.

Giraffesandbottoms · 28/02/2022 08:51

I agree with this

Have just watched episode 7 and came to exactly the same conclusion!
MinglingFlamingo · 28/02/2022 23:24

Just finished watching the final episode. In really enjoyed the series and i don't want to give anything away but I liked how the trial
Summarised and tied everything up

I hope they do a similar series. Of another crime
