I've been obsessed with this case since listening to The Fake Heiress on BBC sounds. Is anyone else watching?! I love the casting of Anna.

OP posts:
TheChosenTwo · 18/02/2022 15:11

Just got to the bit where she pushes out a 2 month old baby Grin

EachandEveryone · 18/02/2022 15:52

@pancakesandsyrupplease

And, i needed to look on IMDB before I realised that Alan Reed was played by Anthony Edwards!
Really? I purposely never because i knew I knew his voice so well I made myself place it. It took awhile. When you see him face on theres no mistaking Doc Greene. Some of them have done some great things since. I miss ER☹️ Greys is not a patch on it and im beginning to tire of Shondas soapy style. Every show is so similar.
No trans hate at all, but Laverne Cox does not remotely look like a woman. It's not just the height, the build and bone structure have a lot to do with it as well.

I think you are being ridiculous. Laverne is beautiful.

The real Kacy Duke was very happy with the casting.
She may very well have been, but there's no denying there's a difference between a woman and a trans woman - at least Laverne Cox. No amount of surgery seems to have changed the fact that LC presents as an attractive man in drag.
TheChosenTwo · 18/02/2022 16:46

Well other than her stature I honestly had no idea she was trans! I mean, she’s really tall but I do know tall women Grin
I’ve never heard of her before.

NurseButtercup · 18/02/2022 17:40

@queenofarles

TheChosenTwo that’s what I can’t wrap my head around, Confused How did she manage to get banks look into financing her project ? Wouldn’t the name Anna Srorkin nationality Russian, Appear on papers? Are people this dumb ? This is supposed to be the financial capital of the world ,
This is the entire point of the series, how did this 25yr old immigrant manage to con seasoned professionals from the financial sector, into supporting her vision.

The older journalists were cast to convey the shock, dismay & awe of Anna, which turned into admiration at her "big balls".

If there were no underwriters at the banks, Anna would have got all that money.

NurseButtercup · 18/02/2022 17:41

@Hotelhelp

It took me a few episodes to realise who Kacy was … Laverne has certainly made progress since the OITNB days!
Yup.....A very good agent and an amazing plastic surgeon ....
WaitingToExhale · 18/02/2022 17:59

Listened to and loved the podcast but Inventing Anna is too drawn out! I'm on episode 5.

Abra1d1 · 18/02/2022 18:38

how did this 25yr old immigrant manage to con seasoned professionals from the financial sector, into supporting her vision.

Her gulling of Alan the lawyer seemed to be a turning point, playing on his feelings about his own daughter and her lack of drive and vision. Once he was on board A had some credibility.

AnyFucker · 18/02/2022 19:47

Laverne Cox does not pass as a woman. Awful casting.

Laverne should play trans women or men.

longwayoff · 18/02/2022 20:22

The thing about actors is, they ACT. They pretend to be what they are not and we, the audience, suspend our disbelief. You do know that the Queen isn't actually starring in The Crown? And Lady Mary from Downton Abbey has a natural Essex accent you could slice bread with. Etc. Etc.

AnyFucker · 18/02/2022 20:29

I don’t give a shit about accents etc

I do object to the attempt to force me to accept that a man can convincingly pass as a woman

longwayoff · 18/02/2022 20:44

Women did not appear on stage until the late 18c. All parts were played by men. It's nothing new.

PinchOfVom · 18/02/2022 21:49

So

On this logic:

Only trans women can play trans women (see the fuss over the Danish Girl)

Only disabled people should play disabled roles

Only gay folks should play gay roles

Fairly sure that only a man would be accepted to play a mama role.

But any fucker can play a woman.

EachandEveryone · 18/02/2022 22:21

I enjoyed it but I didnt really get it. Why were they all so attached to her when she was vile to them? What was she going to do with the 40 million? Do a runner or actually start the club?

Monopolyiscrap · 18/02/2022 22:31

Actors act, but they have to be convincing. I would not be convinced by a fifty-year-old woman playing a ten-year-old child.
Laverne Cox is obviously Trans and is playing a real person. Until this thread I assumed the real person was also Trans.

Tillymintpolo · 18/02/2022 22:32

Alan Reed is Goose from Top Gun !!

fakegermanheiress · 18/02/2022 22:51

If you compare Cox to the real Kacy, the resemblance was clear- I don't think Cox was bad in the role, and those focussing on it ARE appearing transphobic. Actors play outside their own 'box' all the time- that's acting. Garett in Superstore isn't acted by a wheelchair user, Russell Tovey played a straight man in Him & Her, Amybeth McNulty isn't an adoptee. IMO it's those who moan about actors acting that are missing the point here, and you're using that to spout transphobic nonsense. Moaning about someone in their role just because they're trans IS transphobia. I don't believe transwomen are women, I just think that if an actor auditions for a role, and are judged to be the best at that role, they should get the job. When comparing the pictures, she was well cast.

Monopolyiscrap · 18/02/2022 22:56

@fakegermanheiress I am not one to argue that someone should only act in a character they have all the characteristics for already. But Laverne is obviously Trans.

TheChosenTwo · 18/02/2022 22:56

@EachandEveryone I felt the same at the end to be honest. Particular the journalist for missing his family holiday and risking divorce and the journalist though! They kept talking about her like she was a fragile vulnerable child - she was a manipulative devious fraudulent 25 year old woman. It didn’t make any sense to me Hmm

Monopolyiscrap · 18/02/2022 22:58

@fakegermanheiress and if that does not matter, then any actor should be able to play a Trans character. But there is always an out cry from the Trans community if that happens.

fakegermanheiress · 18/02/2022 23:04

Uh, Hayley Cropper?!

Just because some people spout shit doesn't mean it makes sense to spout it back, especially when it makes you look like the bigots.

Yes, any actor who is best for the part should be able to play a trans actor, should they wish. It's acting. Waffle the Wonder Dog doesn't really talk... it's a story!

Just because some in the trans community can't tell fact from fiction doesn't make it right to diss someone because of their background when they're doing their job, and doing it fine.

PureBlackVoid · 19/02/2022 00:54

The journalist was really annoying. I haven’t read any background on this, so not sure which bits are supposed to be true but the journalist just seemed so desperate to be caught up in Anna’s ‘world’ and drama.

Like she wanted to force a bond, be the only one who gets Anna and she was so distraught about her all the time. I laughed every time Anna slated her journalism skills.

The whole story/baby deadline thing was just cheesy.

The lawyer towards the end was also annoying with his ‘I’d kill for you’ and ‘I’m all she has’.

These supposed professionals have some serious boundary issues!

Loopytiles · 19/02/2022 16:20

I enjoy Shonda stuff and enjoyed this. Was fun and less far fetched than Greys or Scandal. So many familiar actors popping up was confusing at times.

Wasn’t convinced that people like the lawyer and journalist would want to help Anna, the motivations for their supposed devotion to her weren’t explained.

Laverne Cox was good in OITNB, also liked her performance in this. Assumed that the character was trans and that, for the plot etc, it wasn’t relevant to dwell on that.

cheekyasfish · 19/02/2022 20:23

Kacy Duke isnt trans

LorelaiDeservedBetter · 19/02/2022 20:46

I think the journalist's backstory was relevant because it implied she was an easy mark ie she'd been conned before by the 'young investor' story. She was susceptible to seeing what she wanted to see if it could be turned into a good headline article.

There seemed to be a very clumsy attempt to say all the 'adult professionals' felt paternalistic or maternalistic towards Anna.

From the lawyer and the journalist's pov, getting Anna's parents' story was important because they were the only ones who could prove or disprove that Anna was a charlatan.

And, tbh, most people would expect a parent to show up if their child was facing court in a high-profile case, whether that child is an adult or not. But I think the lawyer probably stayed because, from a professional reputation pov, it would probably have looked bad if he wasn't there for sentencing - as though he was petulant at losing the case.
