I've been obsessed with this case since listening to The Fake Heiress on BBC sounds. Is anyone else watching?! I love the casting of Anna.

OP posts:
Vanderpump · 19/02/2022 21:03

I've just started watching this, why is Anna speaking in a South African accent?

ThePontiacBandit · 19/02/2022 21:10

Vanderpump Anna does have an odd accent…I guess it’s living in Russia for so long then being a teen in Germany - she interviewed here so you can hear her true voice here

EachandEveryone · 19/02/2022 21:15

Was it true about her taking in the money from Russia as a child?

ESGdance · 19/02/2022 21:24

What do we know about her parents, siblings and upbringing? That would be interesting to know?

What was the timescale of her NY shenanigans? Was it a year or two? Did she arrive at age 23? What did she do / where was she before then?

Loopytiles · 19/02/2022 21:27

I understand the real life person was a woman, not trans, but many other changes were made to the story too, so IMO it’s fine for the character in the show to be trans.

Loopytiles · 19/02/2022 21:46

(In general am ‘gender critical’)

MrsJamin · 19/02/2022 22:08

Yeah because there are so many interesting roles for older black women in popular internationally shown television programmes, aren't there? Why not let a transwoman take one?

WaitingToExhale · 19/02/2022 22:16

Are you joking? I hope you are. 😂 That is certainly not a South African accent. It was an unusual one though.

That’s true. Except that they identified the real woman at the end.

Casting a transwoman as an African American woman does seem to play into problematic stereotypes of Black women as not properly feminine (as this woman explains: www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.buzzfeednews.com/amphtml/hannaheko/aint-i-a-woman).

None of the white women in the story were played by transwomen.

EachandEveryone · 20/02/2022 00:24

I’m surprised there’s nothing on the feminist board

TigerLilyTail · 20/02/2022 01:05

So, now you are accusing Shonda Rhimes of being racially insensitive? 😂

People on Mumsnet really can be bonkers sometimes!

Problematic racial stereotypes are so entrenched in society that even people they are generally applied to often don’t recognise they’re reproducing them. Especially when they are making multiple interdependent decisions at any one time. That’s why racism is so insidious. And sexism.
DoNotTouchTheWater · 20/02/2022 07:17

It is interesting that the only character played by someone not of the sex they were representing was a woman of colour who works as a personal trainer. In that context, saying ‘well the transwoman chosen (whose facial structure has undergone adrogenisation in the womb and at puberty) looks like her’ is quite problematic.

queenofarles · 20/02/2022 08:42

she interviewed here so you can hear her true voice here never heard her interviewed, she sounds very unpleasant.
why is she being glorified ?rewarded with shows after all what she’s done, and why did Shonda allow her to make her friend look like the one to blame, and I can’t believe she’s in her late 20s? She looks at least 20 years older , even before going to jail , could it be Alcohol ?

This gets weirder and weirder.

gabrielleblue · 20/02/2022 16:41

Isn't it quite funny that Kacy Duke was pleased to be portrayed by a trans woman. She must have a better sense of humour than most women who might, not unreasonably, feel insulted. On the other hand: acting.

The actress playing the journalist was very off-putting - and an advertisement for Botox. Get some! And stop gurning/overacting if you get another role.

Julia Garner can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned. Excellent in Ozark, she's as good in this. I found her fat-shaming insults towards Vivian very funny. Especially as the real life Anna was a bit of a chub herself.

But of course who Anna was in her head is quite different to the real thing. Can't understand why she hasnt been deported yet. Surely there is no way the US is going to allow a convicted criminal and someone who has overstayed her visa to remain on US soil. Back to Germany for her. Or maybe to Russia.

Abra1d1 · 20/02/2022 16:57

Why did the journalist need Botox? Lines and wrinkles are completely normal facts of life for many if not most women. She was a working mother of a new baby--probably having sleepless nights.

Even if she was insulted, the current cancel climate would mean there’s no way she’d do anything other than say she’d delighted they thought the best person to play her was a transwoman.

Followed up quickly with a complaint about a woman looking like a 40-something woman on screen. Why am I not surprised?

Totally disagree. Of course she does need Botox. And what you describe as turning is normal facial movement and expressions. Maybe people have got so used to seeing women on the TV who can not move their face properly, that ordinary expressions now look strange?
ItsCanardBruv · 20/02/2022 19:09

Anna is currently in one of the ICE centres.

Can’t believe the comments about Anna’s accent Shock - is this REALLY what people think of those who speak English as a second language?

UglyModernWindows · 20/02/2022 19:29

We just started to watch this too, up to Ep3 now. I find it fascinating and infuriating at the same time. The real Anna is very ordinary looking, to me she just doesn't ooze "private Swiss boarding school" vibe at all, I just don't understand how she got as far as she did.

I don't know much about her until starting the series but I read (might have been in that linked article written by her friend Rachel) that she was always wearing a hoody, leggings and trainers, all high end designer of course. On the tv-series though she is wearing very smart attire?

I moved to UK from another EU country when I was 25 but sadly didn't realise I could have hustled a luxury hotel suite instead of a budget hostel for the first few weeks... I don't condone her actions at all but I have to admit having a little admiration (in lack of better word) for her, moving to US at a very young age, on her own and just getting on with her "vision". That takes some serious chutzpah and nerve. She's clearly a psychopath so the normal constraints don't obviously bother her, like feeling shame or guilt that can hold us mere mortals back.

I absolutely love Nora's brownstone house, that's the way to live in Manhattan!

UglyModernWindows · 20/02/2022 19:31

Regarding Vivienne the journalist, I love the fact she has a normal expressive face and not botoxed to the hilt. I don't think she is gurning at all, funny how her character divides opinion here.

Way to support the sisterhood. I despair of how some women judge and drag down other women.

Indeed.

It’s interesting that it comes from a particularly ‘you can’t question anything to do with transwomen’ poster too.

AnyFucker · 20/02/2022 20:12

@gabrielleblue you don’t like women much

This is a fabulous documentary of the case (4 parts) - shows what she was doing before and how she got herself on the NYC scene (spoiler alert - she really wasn’t a “big shot” as per Netflix)
