I've been obsessed with this case since listening to The Fake Heiress on BBC sounds. Is anyone else watching?! I love the casting of Anna.

@SantaHat

The actress playing the journalist was very off-putting - and an advertisement for Botox. Get some!

Way to support the sisterhood. I despair of how some women judge and drag down other women.

I wouldn't assume every poster on here is a woman especially if they're posting misogynistic rubbish about women needing Botox.

We're all entitled to an opinion. I was kidding about the Botox. I dont have any and never will. But each to her own. I guess we are conditioned to seeing beautiful people on TV, even though that's hardly reflective of real life. The actress playing Vivian was terrible though.
@gabrielleblue you don’t like women much
How could you come to that decision based on my opinions that I like Julia Garner and think she's a brilliant actress, and don't rate the other one, Anna Chlumsky. 50-50!

ouch321 · 20/02/2022 22:27

Just finished watching.

One of the best things I've seen on Netflix since Maid.

A couple of Qs though...

 1. Where did Anna get the 33,000 dollars to pay the bill at Neffs hotel?
 1. When she heads to Chateaux Whatever in LA she goes to the bank and takes out loads of money in cash at the counter. Where did that account and cash suddenly come from as she was homeless before that which we know bcos Kacy refused to let her stay on the sofa?

She wrote bad cheques. Basically, she wrote cheques even though she didn't have any money in her account and quickly withdrew the money from the account she deposited the cheque to before the cheques bounced.

I think this again shows that the American banking system has problems, but these were part of the charges against her.

MichaelAndEagle · 21/02/2022 09:15

I must admit I don't really get why we're supposed to hate Rachel. Anna really did her over and imo she deserved everything she got.

I also listened to the podcast and must listen to it again because it does go into more detail about how exactly she gets so far. It explains the bad cheque for example, that wasn't really clear in the series.
I think she was getting small (well large, but relatively small) loans and using them to provide assurance in order to access the more major finance.

Abra1d1 · 21/02/2022 09:36

THere's an article about Rachel in today's Times. I'll try to get a share token...

Abra1d1 · 21/02/2022 09:38

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/inventing-anna-i-fell-for-a-con-artists-lie-now-everyone-else-has-too-6636g6phn

Does this work? She gives her version of events. The photo of her is quite unlike the IA portrayal.

InventingRachel · 21/02/2022 09:59

Well, I'll say it. The portrayal of Rachel is racist. It's the acceptable face of racism - flattening an intelligent, decent woman into the easy-to-hate spoilt whining white woman. Once you see it, you can't unsee it. Usually championed in super "progressive" circles, left-wing Twitter and so on, or the type of AstroTurfed "anti carceral feminism" which blames woman for rapists being locked up. I think in this programme, it's been deployed to offset criticism of Neff, who is still standing by Anna IRL (I'm not judging).

InventingRachel · 21/02/2022 10:00

To be clear, I think all women are hurt by that kind of portrayal. It's divisive and misogynistic.

LorelaiDeservedBetter · 21/02/2022 11:02

Nope. Rachel swindled people in an acceptable American way ie using people; pretending friendships; selling secrets and proximity to any kind of fame - even infamy works.

Plus, a lot of the criticism of Rachel is rooted in the way she played the other friends, not just Anna. Rachel lied to Kacy and Neff. Her relationship with Neff wasn't that close so that isn't surprising but Rachel lied to Kacy whilst using her for support. Even in recent articles Kacy has been quietly scathing about Rachel.

MermaidEyes · 21/02/2022 16:05

The actress who plays Anna is obviously putting on the pseudo European accent, but if you've watched her in Dirty John the squeaky kind of high pitched voice is real

Loopytiles · 21/02/2022 17:59

Rachel doesn’t come out of the Times article v well at all. She accepted what she thought would be a free, costly, luxury holiday from a new friend. That’s ‘freeloading’ in most people’s book!

AngryMuppet · 21/02/2022 20:27

+1. Also calling someone "a chub" (which I honestly don't think the real Anna is/was, if it matters) is icky.

Julia Garner was fantastic. She really captured how...off Anna is while still being able to capture what must've got her to that position. Leaving aside all the talk of Botox vs no Botox, Vivian's twisting of her face is annoying me.

I wouldn't say I'm exactly in Rachel's corner but I wouldn't take the Netflix portrayal of her too seriously. Neff consulted for Netflix, so her portrayal is more flattering. Undeservedly so, in my opinion. Rachel consulted for HBO - which was probably a case of zigging when she should've zagged as I'm not sure I can see it getting made now, since Inventing Anna beat them to the punch - so she got the villain edit for Netflix.

OhWhyNot · 21/02/2022 20:47

I’m watching last episode. Has dragged on

I think the actress playing Anna is brilliant in everything she does. Her accent is a mix of two European accents. The actress playing Vivian is far too animated (good to see an actress who can be expressive)

I didn’t feel much sympathy for Rachel she wanted a lifestyle and was happy not to pay for it or so she thought. Why are so many seduced by money take some ownership. She allowed herself to be bought

Oblomov22 · 21/02/2022 21:01

Finished watching. Enjoyed. Thought it was good.

MinglingFlamingo · 21/02/2022 22:27

Ok it might be the 7 hour train journey I was on today but I'm hooked on this

Anna's accent is just wow like you can't pinpoint it

Vivian reminds me of her in Making a murderer and party of 5. But IMDb says it's her in My girl which now I know I totally see

I recognise val from something only it's not who I think it is which is even more frustrating

Bobbins36 · 22/02/2022 08:35

@JunkIsland

Going against the grain here - I can’t get enough of this. I don’t think I’d be bored if they’d stretched it out to 15 episodes. I find I enjoy vicariously being immersed in Anna’s world so I’m not in any hurry to rush through the plot points.

I’m half way through Rachel’s episode (7) and so far Val, Alan and Kacy have been the best episodes. Neff a bit disappointing as her story wasn’t as high tension as the others.

I did read an article at the time it all came out, but don’t remember much of the detail so I’ve just accepted all of this as it unfurled. She makes Simon Leviev and the other Netflix-famous con artists look like rank amateurs with the scale of her ambition!

Same, absolutely loved this series. I think she was a damaged, delusional but high functioning narcissist!

I do feel sorry for Rachel and the scale of the debt she got stuck with, though on the the other hand sympathy dwindles when considering how she fully embraced the freebies and the lifestyle when they were on offer. If it seems to good to be true and all that…..
longwayoff · 22/02/2022 10:00

As someone has said way up this thread, you can only con a greedy person. The whole milieu in which these people move is 90% wannabees, freeloaders and liggers all fighting over the spoils from a rich man's table. Occasionally, one gets lucky and grabs the jackpot. No sympathy for any of them.

Bobbins36 · 22/02/2022 10:21

@longwayoff agree! Makes for good telly though!

MichaelAndEagle · 22/02/2022 12:03

Not sure i would say i feel sorry for Rachel. Just that I don't think she deserves a level of hatred for getting her own back!

longwayoff · 22/02/2022 12:22

And I agree with you Bobbins, riveting telly, watched the lot.

TigerLilyTail · 22/02/2022 12:43

I thought good on Rachel for getting her own back!

I disagree that you can only scam greedy people though. Absolutely not true!
