Wow. I've never filled a thread before!

I do find all of the characters are very much a caricature of idealised old-timey good nature, hard working, selfless, Christian type. Life was different in that era, but it must be hard to write the show having not lived the life and having run out of book material very early on

Granted. There are lots of caricatures (looking at you, Trixie and Mrs Buckle!). Lucille and Cyril just seem so old before their time. A reflection of the times, perhaps.

That's interesting about Guyanans, @CaptainMyCaptain. All I remember from school is that the capital is Georgetown. It has come in handy watching 'Pointless' a couple of times.

I can't speak for all of them obviously. The family of sister's best friend in Primary school came from Guyana. They definitely called themselves South American. I think they had Indian heritage too - based on their name and the fact that they had long straight hair, I was quite young.

The fact that Guyana is an ex-UK colony and English or Creole speaking must make it very different to all the other South American countries, and it's very close to the islands of the Caribbean, especially Trinidad and Tobago. Suriname next door is an ex-Dutch colony, and French Guiana, which borders Suriname and Brazil, is a French departement and so part of France in exactly the same way as Normandy (useful bit of trivia there - it means that France has a land border with Brazil). The other South American countries are all Spanish speaking except for Brazil, which was of course a Portuguese colony.

(Thank you, Sporcle and Pointless, you have taught me much.)

My sister was best friends with the girl from British Guiana (as I think it still was then) in the mid 69s, around the time of the current CTM. I expect they explained their country of origin in simple geographical terms. My friend in the late 70s felt that being West Indian could unfortunately have negative connotations to some people which was why she varied her description.

I suppose, depending on where I was in the world I could describe myself as European, British or English or use the County name or town. In Namibia I said I lived near Manchester because there were a lot of Man United fans there and they had a vague idea of where it was. I actually live a couple of hours away but that journey wouldn't seem like a big deal to them. How we describe our origins depends on a lot of different factors. If someone asks where I was born that's a whole different story.

CaptainMyCaptain · 21/02/2022 13:45

60s not 69s.

WildFlowerBees · 21/02/2022 13:57

Just caught up with Sundays episode. That bandage on Dr Twees head Grin I was expecting him to have a seizure and die, but no he lives on to mansplain another day.

Elderflower14 · 21/02/2022 14:08

I loved Nurse Cranes reaction to Cyril and Matthew... YMCA!! 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

Fanacapan · 21/02/2022 14:41

I’m a bit slow, I’ve only just clicked Stephen McGann is married to Heidi Thomas! This explains soooo much! 🤣

SpinningTheSeedsOfLove · 21/02/2022 14:46

Stephen and Joe McGann are great on Twitter, but the actor in the family I really rate is Paul. And there's Mark McGann as well, he's all right. Talented family.

Does anyone know why Sister Frances suggested Benedict as a baby name, to the wife of the killed train driver? I had a quick Google and it suggested St Benedict is invoked to protect from evil. Is that it, or something else?

Toddlerteaplease · 21/02/2022 16:40

I wondered that as well. Thought the choice of Jeremy odd as well. Thought they'd name him Lionel after his dad.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 21/02/2022 16:59

Benedict means blessed. I assumed that might be it.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 21/02/2022 17:02

Jeremy has always been quite a niche name so unlikely that Roberta would have chosen it, I'd have thought. I always thought 'Benedict' meant 'praise to God' or something similar (hence benedictions). It seemed an entirely suitable name for Sister Frances to suggest?

Rainartist · 21/02/2022 17:06

I thought it was Lucille who suggested the name?

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 21/02/2022 17:09

You're probably right @Rainartist. I'm getting confused about who was where last night!

PuntasticUsername · 21/02/2022 18:11

Oh sorry, yes I think you're right @Rainartist. I can't string two thoughts together successfully today to save my life Confused

'blessed' would make sense. And yes it's a lovely name. Was just wondering if there was any reference/deeper significance that I'd missed.

Housewife2010 · 21/02/2022 18:42

I thought the actress who played Carol looked very similar to Thomas Brodie-Sangster from The Queen's Gambit & Love Actually.

I saw two of the McGann brothers in the early 80s in Blood Brothers... They were brilliant..

StillWeRise · 21/02/2022 20:33

Never mind where Cyril is from, I want to know where he gets his jumpers. A particularly fine one last night.

PandoraRocks · 21/02/2022 22:51

Blimey that was shocking last night! Someone on this discussion actually said 'chips and egg' 😉. Unforgiveable, it is always 'egg and chips' Grin

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 21/02/2022 22:54

Shirley Valentine reference, that. Very odd, but that's what she says, repeatedly.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 21/02/2022 23:03

That was me.

I was an egg and chips lass.

Then the dog was off its food and got the steak. Which caused at least two petted lips.

So that is how we now always use chips and egg.

It fitted 🙂

TrashyPanda · 21/02/2022 23:14

@SheldonesqueTheBstard

Cyril taking off Lucille’s shoes though.

You’d need more than nuns and Dr T for salvation if a bloke took off my boots after a shift.

Oh that brought back memories from 40 years ago when we were at a party, dancing away. After a while, went to sit down and I said my feet were sore. He knelt down, took off my shoes and massaged my feet. So lovely. Such happy memories. Pity I married a real wanker.
TrashyPanda · 21/02/2022 23:24

@PriamFarrl

Cyril and Lucille couldn’t go home because the windows had blown in on their flat. But Mr White-Teeth could have.
It really annoyed me, the way he imposed on them like that. As if they didn’t have enough to do without him adding to everything. Like he couldn’t get a taxi home or to the nearest 4 star hotel.

I supposed it was so he could weasel his way into the photo at the end.
