It’s on over 4 consecutive nights I think. Haven’t seen anything about it other than on the tv schedule.

OP posts:

user I followed the Guardian’s live blog while at work during the second inquest, and I put my head on my desk and wept when the report of the “unlawful killing” verdict came through, and I’m not even predominantly a LFC supporter (although ever since Hillsborough I’ve always liked to see them do well, especially since my own team is perpetually shit these days). It makes me so fucking angry to think of the cover ups and lies.

SerendipitySunshine · 02/01/2022 22:49

That was heartbreaking. Those poor families.

gerardsbutler · 02/01/2022 22:51

I can’t watch. I’ve watched the trailer for it and can’t watch the full drama. I hope the families have given their permission for this drama to be made.

CheshireCats · 02/01/2022 22:57

It was a gut wrenching watch. I remember watching it unfold on the TV and being profoundly shocked. The Sun and the police cover ups are still as sickening today as they were then.

PurpleDaisy2114 · 02/01/2022 22:59

Was really shocked at family having to identify their deceased family members by pictures on a board...

I felt the same, so insensitive.
GrandTheftWalrus · 02/01/2022 23:04

I remember reading that and was shocked at how insensitive it seemed.

The sun were despicable in their lies and I'm sure it still isn't sold in Liverpool.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 02/01/2022 23:04

Couldn’t watch it.

Gilmorehill · 02/01/2022 23:06

Slightly different perspective here. I vividly remember Hillsborough and as I had a teenage brother who went to watch matches on the terraces, I found it horrifying and still do. However, today is the 51st anniversary of the Ibrox stadium disaster where 66 people died. I feel it is incredibly insensitive to air this programme unless something is said at the beginning of the programme to acknowledge the anniversary of another football tragedy.

The whole thing was really poorly managed with families being sent to different hospitals as they were told their relative was in one place, then another. It doesn't bear thinking about.
GrandTheftWalrus · 02/01/2022 23:40

@Gilmorehill I mentioned that earlier in the thread. They didn't say anything about it.

I'm on a number of rangers pages on Facebook as I am a rangers fan and a lot of people aren't happy at it being aired tonight.

Knitwit101 · 02/01/2022 23:48

It's been a weird night in our house. My uncle died at Ibrox, he was at the game with my dad, so that has been on our minds all day.

Then this tv show, I hadn't realised it was on tonight. I knew it was coming but didn't register the date. Insensitive is a bit of an understatement in our house.

My dad obsessively followed the coverage of Hillsborough, and because of him I did too. The families of the 97 conducted themselves with such dignity, such dedication, such courage.

I haven't watched tonight, none of my family have, I will probably watch another time. God bless you Anne, you did your boy proud.

GrandTheftWalrus · 02/01/2022 23:50

I'm sorry to hear that @Knitwit101 when I used to have my season ticket I would always take a minute and go to the memorial. Especially if I was at games at this time of year.

I live inLiverpool. Was a student there at the time of the Hillsborough disaster. The S** doesn’t see the light of day here. Literally even Tesco etc don’t stock it and it is always a shock if you go to other places and see it being read. I remember Hillsborough as if it was yesterday. Was shopping with my Nan and called from a phone box to check the score and my dad said it had been stopped due to trouble in the stands. Remember getting home and watching the death toll mount . For some strange reason particularly remember radio Merseyside playing Morning has Broken just after midnight and then listening to a service from one of Liverpool’s cathedral’s as we drove back to Uni the next day. Without doubt one of the most significant moments in my lifetime
Knitwit101 · 02/01/2022 23:56

Aw that's nice @GrandTheftWalrus thanks. It's nice to know people remember.

We've never been to the new memorial, I remember going to the tiny old one when I was small with my grandparents but my dad has never been back.

GrandTheftWalrus · 02/01/2022 23:59

Even my die hard celtic fan friend changed their profile pic today to remember them.

My season ticket was in the copeland road stand so every game I would walk up where it happened and remember. I may only be 37 but no one should go to a football match and never come home.

GrandTheftWalrus · 03/01/2022 00:00

@user1471448866 I can't quote you for some reason but thank you for sharing your experience. I can't even imagine it. I have been to Liverpool once for work and wanted to go to the stadium to pay my respects but never got the chance.

murasaki · 03/01/2022 00:43

I also thought that give this was airing, it was an odd choice to trumpet the standing area in the Premier league game today. By odd, I mean crass, leave it until next week.

murasaki · 03/01/2022 00:50

I also watched standing matches afterwards as a teen, and was frequently off my feet, can totally see how it happened. The police were to blame rather than the fans. I too am watching it for how the legal stuff plays out. Dp is a manc but refused to watch it and won't articulate why. They do have Liverpool family though so I wonder if something will come out.

GrandTheftWalrus · 03/01/2022 00:54

I didn't know English teams now had standing. I know celtic have had safe standing for a good few years where they still have a seat but a terrace stand as well.

Piggywaspushed · 03/01/2022 06:58

I thought this programme was magnificent. I have The Scum headline from the day after Hillsborough seared on my eyeballs.

Maxine Peake was a tour de force.

I think everyone should know about Hillsborough,as much for the corruption, machinations and huge, institutional cover ups that occurred afterwards.

Yes, it is about much more than football.

I know Liverpool fan still get songs/chants at matches about being 'victims'. Yes, it would always have been horrific but if the truth had come out straight away and justice been done, we wouldn't have had to go on about it for so long. It isn't that Liverpool fans think they need more sympathy than any other team that has suffered tragedy but we needed to fight a lot harder and longer for the wrongs to be put right.

TomAllenWife · 03/01/2022 10:02

I am going to watch this later.

There was an amazing BBC documentary a few years ago with Phil Scratton in who helped the families fight for justice. It was beyond heartbreaking when a mother said she wasn't allowed to hold her son after he died.
I have Phils book but I'm finding it too hard to read

bottleofbeer · 03/01/2022 14:39

Sorry to say it but that shit rag is still sold and read in Liverpool. It's mostly shunned but it's known which places keep copies under the counter.

I've seen neighbours buy it Angry

whatsthestory123 · 03/01/2022 17:39

watched the whole 4 episodes last nigh very moving and Anne really did make it her life's work
