It’s on over 4 consecutive nights I think. Haven’t seen anything about it other than on the tv schedule.

OP posts:

Fir me this bbc documentary fearing the real Anne and other parents is the most comprehensive I have seen. It also covers the investigation into the cover up, headed by professor Phil Scranton. On BBC iPlayer now. www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b07bgnkn/hillsborough

Heartbreaking.

@StarbucksSmarterSister

Those absolute BASTARDS from The Sun

Time and again they behaved like this
(still do if they can no doubt) when something like this happens.

I remember watching the Leveson Enquiry and seeing the mother of a murdered young woman describe how her son (teenager I believe) committed suicide because of the harassment and the lies the gutter press told about his sister.

It’s not committed suicide, that’s a throw back to when it was a sin and a crime, and now know it’s caused by Illness it’s referred to as completed suicide, or dying by suicide, or someone taking their own life.

I know this doesn’t seem important and it’s not part of the topic but I lost a sibling to suicide and it’s really important to me.

I’ve just watched that. Amazing work by him. But by god, that was difficult to watch. But really does demonstrate just how horrific the actual circumstances of that day were (obviously) and then everything afterwards for the families. JFT97 ❤️

@dinahsdishes

The state pulled Rank :( Maggie hated Liverpool after the riots in 1981. She was privy to all the evidence from the Taylor report that blamed the police but it was all suppressed. It didn't help that the families were working class either Angry

The truth was always in plain site - if you watch the docudrama by Jimmy McGovern, it's pretty true to the findings made at the second inquests. The s*n and others such as the spectator swayed the general population into apathy and believing the cover up version of events

It's abhorrent that no one has been held responsible.

When Boris was editor of the spectator he published this - just as bad as Kelvin McKenzie IMO.

Jft97 Thanks

What the fuck is this actually true? I believe you

In light of all the lies that have been told this needs to be addressed

Itstheprinciple · 04/01/2022 22:29

All absolutely true.

Rummikub · 04/01/2022 22:38

I couldn’t watch the first one. But have watched 2/3.
Amazing woman Anne- never giving up the fight.
I was in Sheffield that day as news filtered through. People blaming Liverpool fans.
Ive not seen the s** bought or sold in Liverpool since.

AdditionalCharacter · 04/01/2022 22:47

Watched most of the first one in tears, and finished the last one in tears.

I was only 9 when it happened, and not living in the UK. Didn't know much of it until the 20th anniversary and watched the documentary ITV (?) did a few years ago. So heartbreaking for all the families,.

The youngest to die was only ten years old.
Does anyone else remember the photo on the front of the Mirror newspaper? That photo has haunted me for years.

Gooseysgirl · 05/01/2022 01:36

That was Jon-Paul Gillhooley - cousin of Steven Gerrard.

Piggywaspushed · 05/01/2022 06:50

I do royal. Me too.

I remember it. IIRR the Mirror was censured for using such a dreadful picture. I can't unsee it, even though it was way back in 1989.

It was a very good drama - I am off sick atm so binge watched it.

I'd like to recommend the Guardian journalist David Conn who has written extensively about the Hillsborough disaster. He is excellent, detailed and passionate. Please read his recent piece on the exoneration of Duckenfield 'The Great Betrayal'.

JFT97 Flowers.

I hadn't even bought The Mirror. I was a carer and was tidying up an old woman's flat and the paper was lying flat showing that photo. It was absolutely dreadful and should never have been allowed. Even in death those poor people were given no dignity.

I remember it. I think that it was important that they did print it, alongside the headline 'Never Again'. At that point, the story was already being told that this was about football hooligans, that it was down to them fighting. The TV news was so blurry and distant that it was hard to see what really happened. That photo showed the women and children. As shocking as it was, it brought home that this could be any of us who go on a day out and are utterly failed by the system.

chilling19 · 05/01/2022 13:24

Marystuart- yes the bbc doc is so very well done isn't it? They portray the feeling of excitement of the match beforehand perfectly and provide a step by step narrative through all the events.

Meanwhile I have watched the first two episodes of Anne - had me in tears. She is such a good actress, and Anne is an inspirational woman.

Whattheduck · 05/01/2022 13:30

My Nanna’s neighbour lost both of her sons at Hillsborough
I’m just watching the 1st episode very moving

Knitter99 · 05/01/2022 13:58

I sometimes wonder about the other families, this was mentioned briefly in last night's episode. How did Anne become the leading person? Were there other families trying just as hard as Anne to get publicity for their people but somehow she just caught the public's imagination more? Did she try harder, was she more determined, better at campaigning? I feel a bit sad for the other families that this one person is singled out as doing something heroic for her son. And it was amazing, don't get me wrong, but there must have been other families pushing just as hard. I feel for them.

RoyalFamilyFan · 05/01/2022 14:02

It was because her case legally was more clear cut. There were witnesses who could say he was alive after the cut-off time, and they include a Special Police Constable, so someone respectable.
Other families fought hard, but the evidence wasn't quite as strong as it was in Anne's case.
I am sure it caused resentment though which the programme did hint at.

Gilmorehill · 05/01/2022 14:08

I don’t remember hearing any negative things about Liverpool fans at the time. Maybe because I lived in Scotland. I am well aware of what the Sun did. It really is a scummy newspaper.

OnlyTheTitosaurusOfTheIceberg · 05/01/2022 14:12

I’ve seen another programme - maybe the Jimmy McGovern one? I can’t be sure - where the focus was more on Trevor Hicks, who was a big part of the families’ support group.

LadyCatStark · 05/01/2022 14:19

I was only 3 when it happened but I went to the 20th anniversary with DH. It was far more moving in real life but I guess that’s hard to portray on TV. I’m so glad they did finally get the truth if not real justice and it’s such a shame that Anne didn’t live long enough to gain closure. No one in my family will ever by the S*n or even accept the free copies that they tried to entice people with a few years ago.

Nat6999 · 05/01/2022 14:35

I watched it all last night, I'm from Sheffield & a Sheffield Wednesday supporter, I can remember everything from that day from hearing on the bus home from town that there was trouble on Leppings Lane to walking in our local pub & being shocked from what I saw on television & the death toll going up & up. I have read Kevin Sampson's book, Anne's daughter's & Phil Scruton's as well. South Yorkshire Police should have been disbanded after their guilt & corruption, as Andy Burnham said if Orgreave had been investigated properly then there would have been less chance of Hillsborough & Rotherham.

Kevin's case was one of the ones where there was most evidence that he could have been saved, and so it showed that the disorganised police response and failure to let ambulances in to treat the injured could ahve caused more people to die.
Mydogisagentleman · 05/01/2022 16:59

Maxine Peak is a genuis.
I thought I knew quite a lot about the events, but the first episode proved otherwise.
I wouldn’t touch the s*n with a barge pole. Someone at work has it delivered, I managed to convince her to try the mirror

That’s a really good point about Orgreave.
