It’s on over 4 consecutive nights I think. Haven’t seen anything about it other than on the tv schedule.

Hillsborough was a dangerous ground. There had been crushes before, notably in another semi final the year prior with Spurs fans where there was a crush. That Hillsborough staged the match at all is one of the biggest scandals.

Either he wasn't looking, didn't care or has serious learning difficulties.

He just didn't care - he was too busy making contingency plans for when the fans got violent because he was expecting them to be violent mobs of vandals, not large groups of men, women and children who just wanted to watch their team play.

His priorities before, during and after the game were not on fan safety but on self preservation and preparing for riots that never happened and then trying to cover up his own incompetence.

God how very sad 'Anne' was.

I remember watching the docu/drama Jimmy Mc Govern wrote after interviews with the families and that too was heart breaking and was shocked at the cover up that went on, his drama went into a bit more detail re the police, cameras etc.

This programme 'Anne' really showed the difficulties the families went through trying to get justice and gave us a deeper insight into what Anne's family went through.

So many people suffering for so long and still no one held accountable.

@Pegasussnail

Was the mark on Anne's face at the start relevant (missed the first bit) Thanks

@GrandTheftWalrus

I remember reading that and was shocked at how insensitive it seemed.

The sun were despicable in their lies and I'm sure it still isn't sold in Liverpool.

Scousers will forever shun the sun. Why anybody would buy it is beyond me its proven to be a paper of lies!

One thing I hadn't actually thought about before even after reading and watching about it for years....

The coaches. They had to watch a coach arrive, watch everyone get off and look to see if a loved one was on it. Then repeat that several times.

Even then they wouldn't know for sure whether they were alive in hospital or dead.

No phones back then either.

No where near comparable but I remember 25 years ago my brother going on a sports trip on a mini bus and on the news there had been a mini bus crash at the place they went and another team had members died. They news showed the bags and clothing scattered about the ground and myself and mum were looking to see if we could spot anything. My mum leant my brother her mobile but he had left it in his bag. That was hard enough and it was only 3/4 hours.

Yes, everyone makes mistakes - Duckenfield's mistake was a tragic one, but he was human and inexperienced. If he had held his hands up to that in 1989 then the Hillsborough families would still have lost their family members but they would have been able to have closure there and then. Instead Duckenfield and SYP tried to deflect the blame to the fans and victims and that injustice and self preservation is what has left those families without closure and fighting for over three decades.

Exactly this.
We see this all the time, families living in torture, all of these enquiries costing hundreds of thousands of pounds.
At the end ‘lessons will be learnt’ but they never are.
Are these people scared or just arrogant? No one seems to want to take any responsibilities for their actions.
I’m sure that morning Duckenfield didn’t intend for the day to end the way it did.
He should have just owned up.
Instead his people filled everyone’s heads with lies, made police change statements, even today people believe what they said.
Hopefully the new Hillsborough law will stop this from happening again

Gilmorehill · 08/01/2022 16:28

We shouldn’t have to rely on people holding their hands up. The system should hold those with responsibility to the public to account when they fail.

He didn't just make a mistake though with the opening of the gate, it's his behaviour afterwards. He was directly looking into the pens and could see people being crushed. He put no emergency plan into action, would t allow all the ambulances, didn't give instructions to police officers on the ground. More people could have been saved if they had opened more safety gates in the pens, instead police officers were said to have been turned away. Not enough stretches or medical equipment. His mistake could have been minimised as much as possible but he did nothing.

Late to the game here. Recorded it and have just watched the last episode. It was extremely moving, I could only watch one episode a night and was blarting each time. I too watched the tragedy unfold with my husband and baby. It was absolutely shocking and distressing.
The way Anne and the other Hillsborough families fought for justice is astounding and so brave. I still can't believe that the inquests found it 'unlawful killing' but no one has been held accountable.

I can't believe a retired senior policeman can admit to his 'mistake' in a coroner's court, and then tell a totally different story in a crown court and there be no problem.

It was a pretty unrelenting watch

MrsLargeEmbodied · 24/01/2022 07:55

i remember the day in 1989, and dh was a Mirror reader and had the paper, he kept it for years, i kept wanting to throw it out, i think i did in the end,
it took the families a very long time for any justice
