Just starting this. Judging from the trailers I will be crying and shouting at the telly in frustration before long.

OP posts:

On episode 7 and it's so good, but at times a hard watch.

Soubriquet · 04/10/2021 08:15

Watching now only on episode 2 but a few of my thoughts:-

Paula is a useless mother. Incredibly infuriating, has no support for her daughter or granddaughter and only cares about herself. I feel so sorry for Alex.

She really does have it difficult. Sean is an asshole who only wants Maddy to just Alex for leaving in the first place.

Soubriquet · 04/10/2021 08:20

Sorry episode 3 not 2

I actually wanted to go through the screen and smack the shit out of Paula when they were getting burgers.

Theblacksheepandme · 04/10/2021 08:53

Soubriquet
It's a little more complex than that. Paula has mental health issues. She can't even help herself nor to mind her daughter and grandchild. Yes she is a shit Mother.

Sean is an asshole but he is also a product of his own awful childhood.

I also feel sorry for Alex as she has basically had to be a parent to her Mother. She was right to leave Sean for her sake and Maddy.

We have choices we can make in life and if we get opportunities to get away from that crap life we shouldn't make a mess of those opportunities.

queenofarles · 04/10/2021 10:21

We understand Paula more in later episodes, you really end up feeling bad for her .

It definitely is a very hard watch, but very real in terms of what victims of DV go through, I feel bad to say this but I feel the welfare system in the US is designed to appear so complicated so people just give up trying ? This certainly was the case with Alex and I don’t blame her one bit.

Theblacksheepandme · 04/10/2021 11:35

That's the welfare system for you. I remember watching I Daniel Blake by Ken Loach. It had me sobbing at the end. The welfare system seems to only assist people that know how to work it. I want my taxes to help people like Alex.

Riddo · 04/10/2021 11:42

I binged watched it over the weekend. It was brilliant but made me cry and has lowered my mood considerably. I should have watched it more slowly interspersed with something more cheerful.

I would definitely recommend it, the girl who plays Alex is incredible.

ChequerBoard · 04/10/2021 14:24

I'm on ep4 and I'ma bit incredulous that she's be so bloody stupid with the OLD and the house!

Crazybirdlady · 04/10/2021 14:31

I loved this. I liked how they showed the abuse as being emotional more than physical, as it highlights the issues around it not being taken seriously and difficult to prove, as well as the victim not being able to see it for what it was. I also thought it showed how easy it is to go back and fall into the same trap. It was very well done.
And the actress who plays Alex is so beautiful.

I completely agree with you. There were times I thought to myself that I may have gone back and fallen for his charm. I watched this with my 13 year old as I think dramas like this can be an education. I said to my daughter at one stage if she would go back and she replied if you leave that you leave for a reason and should never go back. I hope she keeps that wise head when she gets older.

itsgettingwierd · 04/10/2021 16:19

Definitely worth watching.

It's a real eye opener and at times like reading a MN thread and helps you see how this situation occurs and how hard it is.

The actress who plays Alex is fantastic.

MountainAshley · 04/10/2021 20:03

I'm really enjoying it. Currently on S1 E8.

ReuniteTracyandEliska · 04/10/2021 22:27

I think it’s brilliant. The family court stuff reminded me of what has happened to my daughter and I. I hope it increases understanding of coercive control.

wildthingsinthenight · 04/10/2021 23:06

Finished this tonight and really enjoyed it. Brilliant tv

ReuniteTracyandEliska · 04/10/2021 23:47

I felt like the other cleaner shut her in the hidey hole on purpose even though she said she didn’t.

I wonder if it was the same in the book the series is based on, that she had a buried trauma that she remembered after being in that house.

Really sad how history repeats. I’m guessing from the tweets from the writer that things got much better.

The My Little Ponies made me laugh. Cute but sinister.

tigerbear · 04/10/2021 23:47

Why didn’t she say yes to go out with that lovely guy who gave her the car??

Allywill · 05/10/2021 00:49

I am enjoying it - although agree it’s pretty relentless (just finished ep 6) but little things really bug me. Like the guy (Nate?) says his son Brady is 7 and has outgrown the car seat. Then at the park and the birthday party Brady is a similar age to Maddie. You notice these things so much more now when you binge watch stuff.

Pinkbonbon · 05/10/2021 00:54

I haven't finished it yet but I'm not keen on the way the portray the abuser.

They make put that the drink turns him into the abuser and yet when he is sober he is a complete sweetheart. I get that maybe that was to make us think 'oh, that's why she stayed so long' but really, it's just yet another show that fails to accurately capture abuse.

They do however do a good job with 'Mr nice guy' the friend who doesn't want anything...honest... xD

And I think the mothers acting of the bipolar mania is brilliant.

queenofarles · 05/10/2021 09:25

tigerbear I think Alex wanted to proof her worth first , she didn’t want to be viewed by him as a charity case.
I really felt sorry for Sean, he too is a victim of his parents , I don’t want to ruin it to those who have not finished it yet , so won’t say more .

GetInThereLewis · 05/10/2021 09:32

I thought Nate had the potential to be abusive. He didnt respect her boundaries, and turned quite nasty eventually. He was beautiful though. I thought Hank was the worst, I wanted Alex to shout at him at how useless he was. He let her down every time.

Crazybirdlady · 05/10/2021 09:54

Not so sure about that RE Sean and the drink. When she went back to him he was quick to see to it that the first thing that went was her phone. And he wouldn't accept that she needed to work. He was sober then. He was only nice when he was trying to get her back.

I think it's natural to feel sorry for him though, which is clever because it would make it harder for Alex to leave him.

I'm happy she didn't go out with Nate. Her happy ending needed to be about her and she needed to get there by herself. I would feel really deflated she ended up being "rescued" by a man. Especially him as some of his behaviour was questionable too.

Theblacksheepandme · 05/10/2021 09:54

tigerbear
I think Pinkbobon hit the nail on the head about Nate. He wanted something out of the relationship when really what she needed was a good dependable friend.

Crazybirdlady · 05/10/2021 09:58

Agree that Hank was the worst. Hated his attitude that the woman should just put up with the abuse to prioritise The Man's Needs, and that The Man should be excused from his behaviour because really it was just the drink Angry

Theblacksheepandme · 05/10/2021 09:59

When I said out loud while watching that I felt sorry for Sean my daughter nearly got whiplash with the dirty look she gave me.

Mol1628 · 05/10/2021 10:25

I thought this was a brilliant watch. The actress playing Alex was impressive. I hope she gets other acting jobs from this. The little girl playing Maddy was brilliant too.
