Just starting this. Judging from the trailers I will be crying and shouting at the telly in frustration before long.

The series is loosely based on a memoir. I swear one of the house owners is a fictionalised version of someone I knew. When I read an interview she mentioned this household candidly too, no names obviously but you can add up clues. (The interview was for British media so I'm guessing she may have been less concerned about identity)

Cruiser123 · 11/10/2021 12:31

It's brilliant xx

Magicalwoodlands · 11/10/2021 18:42

So was she thrown out of the house she was renting from the same sex couple?

Cruiser11 · 11/10/2021 18:52

Yes

allsorts1 · 11/10/2021 18:54

It's really tough to watch and I almost gave up at one point when she let a bad situation happen as it was just SO frustrating, but then I realised the whole point of it is that look where she has come from and who raised her, how many people in the world can't navigate systems in a logical way or self sabotage? It's realistic. But gruelling viewing.

Yes because of the party and Sean breaking into their house.
Gherkingreen · 11/10/2021 18:56

I'm enjoying it very much. It feels rral and painful woth glimmers of joy.
Andy McDowell isn't the best actress but I've always had a soft spot for her, and I adore that she's let her perfectly beautiful curly hair go grey and refused to be persuaded otherwise.

Gherkingreen · 11/10/2021 18:57

Magicalwoodlands · 11/10/2021 19:13

It’s hard to watch but what was she thinking with the party … I suppose that’s the point, really.

winterchills · 11/10/2021 19:19

@Riddo I have been feeling the same after binge watching it. I can't shake the feeling

She just wanted her mum and Sean there. Sean should have told his friend and her friends to go.

Yeah it's hard watching someone mess up. That's what makes Maid so amazing, it's so accurate. Real people mess up.
takeasadsongandmakeitbetter · 11/10/2021 21:48

I couldn't help but binge this... literally stayed up way past my bedtime to keep watching!

Finished it a few days ago and it's been on my mind so much. Think it will stay with me for a long time. I found it so accurate, clever and absolutely heart wrenching in its rawness.

I found it particularly clever how you almost like Sean at times and feel sorry for him, it shows so accurately how men like this charm and trap women (even those who you wouldn't expect it of) and how easy it is for Alex to go back when he was nice because it would be so much easier if he was nice all the time and she could just get on with it despite knowing she could make a better life for herself, she clearly feels responsible and indebted to him.

Definitely hit close to home

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 11/10/2021 22:52

I think Alex's upbringing was chaotic and some of that chaos followed her around which is accurate of what happens.

The lovely lady at the refuge broke my heart with her kindness. What an amazing place.

Theraindropss · 12/10/2021 09:49

I was so annoyed when she got thrown out of that house. When Sean’s girlfriend wanted to invite friends over she could have kicked them all out before it got to that point. I do wonder if he broke into the landlords house on purpose though to get her thrown out.

I liked Nate and didn’t see him as abusive. I had a crush on him. I thought his intentions were clear and her sleeping with Sean was asking too much of him. I’m glad she made her own way and didn’t take the easy option with him though as she clearly didn’t fancy him.

Ahh that little girl. I have a 3 year old daughter and cried most of the way through. I liked that she was a calm mother, 3 is a great age and it made me miss Dd as I am currently caring for two newborns!

I did think it was going to turn into a murder/ horror movie show at one point with barefoot Billy’s house!!

Theraindropss · 12/10/2021 09:59

What did everyone think when she stopped the car in that main road to get schmariel?!

I couldn’t believe it but then realised in the moment, I have also made a few bad decisions but have been lucky.

MyVaginaHatesMe · 12/10/2021 10:20

It was grim when Shaun brought his gf back to his and Alex was in bed with Maddie. That made me feel sick.

Theblacksheepandme · 12/10/2021 10:50

Theraindropss
The barefoot billy story was so sad. He was parented by what I can only describe as a monster. The locks on the doors and food cupboards.

It is sad how his story ended up with people thinking he was a monster. Alex could see all of what he went through in that house. That is why she left food for him. If he really was still around it was probably the only kindness he ever received.

That wasn't even his girlfriend just a random woman.

I kept thinking barefoot Billy is keeping an eye on Alex and Maddie when they were on their bear hunts, kept hoping he’ll see she’s trapped and do something.
Nospringchickendipper · 12/10/2021 17:01

I cried at the last episode when Maddie and her climbed the mountain.
I’m glad Paula didn’t go with her at the end I think Alex needed a fresh start in her new life without her.
Her Dad was the one who let her down the most,no acknowledgement about what he had done to her mother.
At least Sean felt some remorse and tried to do right by Maddie at the end

IrishMel · 12/10/2021 17:11

Update, got through few episodes and just stopped watching it as got bored even though main character is great and the little girl. I started watching The Chestnut Man which is more my thing and it is fantastic.

Theblacksheepandme · 12/10/2021 17:39

I was practically screaming at the telly not to bring Paula. I think it would have been a complete disaster if Paula went. I think deep down Paula knew that and it was why she did what she did.

Stickyblue1987 · 12/10/2021 22:04

@Theblacksheepandme
I agree. I think Paula knew that Alex and Maddy would have a better shot on their own and stepped back.

Tealandabney · 13/10/2021 08:11

I just finished watching this and loved it. I liked that there was some acknowledgment from her at the end that her mum had done good and managed to get away from her dad. Although she had many other faults she had at least done this which is not easy.

I felt quite tearful at times watching it
