Just starting this. Judging from the trailers I will be crying and shouting at the telly in frustration before long.

I've just finished ep 7, so not the whole way through, but so far it doesn't seem like she's ending up with Nate and that's good, I thought it was bad enough when he came to her rescue with the car and then a place to stay, the story really needs to be about her resolving this herself not leaning on a man - because it was a man/ men who got her into this situation.

There are some parts I was a bit WTF about, like the (attempted) hookup at the house of the woman she cleaned for (and presumably stealing her clothes), and the idea she could clean a house that size in 3 hours was ridiculous, I don't care how good a cleaner she is!
Also that on the one hand she didn't want help, but then would accept it when it suited her, like with the car, and getting the daughter into pre-school etc.

I am finding Andie McDowell significantly less irritating in this than in anything else I've ever seen her in, I don't know if it's because she's acting with her real life daughter? But I feel she portrays Paula very believably.

Looking forward to the remaining episodes.

tigerbear · 05/10/2021 10:47

Ah, yes, I can see that now regarding Nate, thanks to those who highlighted the reasons why she didn’t go out with him.
I haven’t finished the series yet, but will prob binge more later.

Little Maddy is one of the best child actresses I’ve ever seen.

Finding Andie McDowell even more irritating than usual!!

queenofarles · 05/10/2021 11:21

Something Sean said about working in a bar and struggling not to drink really made feel sorry for him, Maybe Nate wants to patch things up with his daughter by helping Sean, but it shouldn’t be on Alex’s and Maddies expense , if she didn’t get out of this cycle , Maddie would end up just like her and like Paula.
It’s truly heartbreaking , raw and uncomfortable to watch at times but also inspiring 😣.

And yes every teen girl should watch this.

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 05/10/2021 11:24

Amazing show, best thing I’ve watched in a long time. Loved little Maddie!

Binge watched it and have now ordered the book. Saw an article by the author in Time magazine and oh, she is such a wonderful writer.

Actress is brilliant, found Andie McDowell's character deeply irritating but that was the only downer, it's a devastatingly accurate account of life as a mother escaping abuse and navigating govt welfare.

Love love love the calculator ticking in the top right corner, adored the refuge staff and other escapees, so true to my own experience.

Someobe in here complained that it's depressing and relentless. It certainly has threads of that as it is a true life account and, let's be honest, escaping abuse and trying to sort be on minimum wage is no picnic. And she's human, a damaged human who is trying to find a new way forward. There's no quick fix. God love her for shedding light on the appalling abuse of single mothers the world over.

MrsKeats · 05/10/2021 11:48

Loving this so far.
I love the friend in the shelter.

Agree with all of this. It is depressing and relentless but that's how it needs to be. I also left an abusive relationship and can identify with so much of this. Especially knowing that the abuser is really just a victim too and feeling sorry for them. It makes it harder to leave.
Theblacksheepandme · 05/10/2021 12:45

Her friend in the shelter broke my heart. She appears on the outside as this tough person but she was so fragile. The dog bit made me laugh so much though.

Soubriquet · 05/10/2021 13:34

I’m just watching where she’s back in the shelter and it’s heartbreaking to watch.

It’s lovely that she gets so much help whilst she’s there though

Soubriquet · 05/10/2021 14:43

I can’t believe her dad won’t help her. He would rather pander you the violent alcoholic than protect his daughter and granddaughter.

MrsKeats · 05/10/2021 16:25

I know it's awful sobriquet

Wow what a great series and acting. The little girl actress is amazing!

PieMistee · 05/10/2021 20:04

I ended up really enjoying it. In reality I imagine she would have some more shit parenting moments than she did. No one is that good so often.

PieMistee · 05/10/2021 20:06

Her dad was a brilliant example of why this shite prevails and why if you can leave an abuser you should for your children.

Coronado2 · 05/10/2021 20:44

I've watched it all in 3 days. I really loved it. There were definitely bits where I was annoyed with her for making bad choices. I did feel sorry for Sean and underneath I think he's a good guy, who I hope sorts himself out (I know he's not real, but I assume based on someone real). I'm still glad she left him though.

I think she was a great actress and so was the actress playing Regina. Part of me wanted her to like Nate and part of me found him really creepy. Hank was the worst in terms of support, he was stable, in a position to help, could see she needed it and just let her down. Sean tried at times, at times was great, other times terrible, her mum had huge issues of her own. Her dad just never tried unless it was easy for him.

Is it worth reading the book after watching it?

Shimmyshimmycocobop · 05/10/2021 22:06

I really liked this too, Andie McDowell was just irritating and is not a good enough actress to convincingly play someone with bipolar ( if that's what it was)

It was good enough that this didn't spoil it for me, I thought the dad was weak and a coward and I liked that Sean wasn't an out and out monster, his character was more complex than that

spotcheck · 05/10/2021 22:27

I loved it, but nearly turned off at one point as it was veering into misery porn territory.
I couldn't quite believe that she would allow the party in the gazebo- seemed out of character.

I do think Alex and Sean broke the cycle that both their families were caught in. By the end Sean still had a ways to go, but he was self aware, and genuinely wanted the best for Maddy.

Love love loved the shelter manager. And Alex's shit hot lawyer.

puffylovett · 05/10/2021 22:35

I’m on episode 9 after bingeing it and have loved it. I absolutely love Andie McDowell in this, I thought she was fantastic. I totally fell for Margaret her daughter in Once upon a time in Hollywood and athe aleftovers, I think she’s a superstar in the making.

selflove · 05/10/2021 22:44

I totally binged on it. Sean could have been based on my ExH so much it's freaky. And much like Alex, I had friends/family minimise things because he tried so hard when he was sober.

When Danielle the DV Shelter friend said "before they bite, they bark. Before they hit you, they hit near you", it's so accurate to how so much abuse starts. Learning to recognise the red flags early on (and having the support in place to leave) is so crucial

NoEffingWay · 05/10/2021 23:32

Finished it this evening, I was mesmerised for the entire time, the book is on order!

This was the part that grated a bit on me. She was too perfect a mother (except for that period she was back with Sean and even then she was going through the motions). I don't think she ever once shouted at Maddie. That and Andie McDowell's bad acting (but it improved towards the end I thought).

Loved it though.

Shelddd · 06/10/2021 03:09

Overall it was Great, some little annoying things.

First was Nate, i get they needed to stick in a nice guy who was trying to help because he likes her... which is a pretty typical experience... but they make him out to be this horrible guy when what she did that last night was inexcusable. Basically everyone would stop helping someone after that. I've babysat for a friend before who said they would be out for a couple hours than didn't show up till the next day. It's a horrible experience and I never talked to them again even though we were friends and same sex. It's inexcusable and friendship ending type behaviour.

I got really irritated with the mother too. I just didn't really believe she was a real person whereas I could buy the rest of the characters.

To me it almost felt like the mother was closer to how an addict would act... I thought maybe it was originally supposed to be an addict but they wanted to clean it up for tv so made it about mental health... But the way she acted was definitely more consistent with an addict.
