Just starting this. Judging from the trailers I will be crying and shouting at the telly in frustration before long.

She's definitely a better mum than me. How spineless was her dad? Nate was odd aswell. It was like because he helped her she owed him.

Nate was typical of many men who label themselves 'the nice guy'- a fine line to the incels- because they're not abusive, they're owed from women. It was interesting they didn't show us his ex-wife and her story at all.

The dad wasn't just spineless. He was a selfish misogynist.

I was baffled when she was able to stay out all night watching her mum, and leave Maddy at the women's refuge, who was babysitting her all night?

It was a brilliant portrayal.

"I think this is brilliant, it reminds me a bit of "the pursuit of happyness" with Will Smith."

Yes, especially the but where the boy drops his toy crossing the road and Maddie with the toy mermaid.

Just finished this, really loved it, shed lots of tears. The acting by Alex and her daughter is amazing, overall the series has 3 Golden Globe nominations.

I thought it would get nominated for lots of awards

Just watched up end of Episode 7 and although it's brilliant at times, at times I want to scream at the screen at her!!!!

My ex-husband is very much like the ex in this series and I also walked out on him with just my daughter, but some of the things she does are infuriating

Just finished binge-watching Maid! My thoughts:

Nobody can clean a filthy house with 3 sponges.

Nobody can clean a mansion in 3 hours.

The hoarder lady had “hoarded” very neatly and cleanly and was quite happy to simply throw things out until there was a rectangle of floor Hmm

The difficulty of navigating the benefits system was spot on. Plus the cash count-down on the screen. The embarrassment. Pretending to be okay. All very good.

I thought the mum character was good - it really got me that she decided to stay and reminds me how I feel a heavy sadness reading some posts on here. When you can see a woman should clearly leave but they can’t see it yet and may never let themselves see it..

The lead character was excellent, as was the little girl.

I think the series could have finished on episode 8 - leaving her back where she started and with that sinking “I’ve been so stupid” feeling - showing how easy it is to get sucked back in to an abusive relationship. That’s how I experienced it at first - I didn’t know I had 2 episodes left Grin

Yes fabriquebelgique I also noticed that they made it look surprisingly easy for a hoarder to just through stuff out. When there is a little more to it than just the practical side of chucking stuff out. I loved the whole series though, thought it was amazing and so well written/acted. I also got sucked in to the “oh he isn’t so bad” thoughts when she decided to go back to him.

*throw stuff out

Yes, this is exactly what I thought! Who was Maddie being looked after all night while she watched her mum in the Walmart car park?

Have recently binge watched this and thought it was amazing too. Absolutely brilliant acting by Alex and Maddie. I found episode 1 quite hard-going but glad I persevered. It all just seemed so utterly hopeless at first, that she had literally no-one to turn to for help and support. So glad there is a positive ending, and am now looking forward to reading the book.

Why do PP not like Nate? He WAS a nice guy and she should have stayed with him!

I know this is an old thread but just binged watched and loved this show. I have thankfully not been a victim of DV or faced homelessness, but I found each episode completely riveting and very realistic apart from towards the end when Alex began cleaning for the hoarders, all her childcare issues vanished into thin air and everything resolved itself.

I also have to admit there were moments I wanted to shout at Alex! I do not want this to come across as victim blaming but there were occasions she was so passive in the face of some avoidable situations and some of her decision making was awful. I cringed in the first episode when she left Maddy strapped in the car on the highway to go and retrieve the cuddly toy. Then Maddy’s birthday party..wtf. After struggling for so long to find a decent rental Alex allowed what should have been a small kids party at the house to get completely out of hand. She could have stopped Sean’s girlfriends from invading the space with alcohol but just stood by as the evening wore on music blaring and the landladies clearly upset.

It was a terrible judgement call to move in with Nate (I get she was desperate) when he clearly wanted one thing from her and I had a feeling from the start that his nice guy mask would eventually fall when he didn’t get it. He was a complete arse really.

I agree Sean’s character was well written and seemed designed to show how easy it is to sympathize with an abuser, particularly one who is ‘trying to change’. For instance I was initially annoyed when she moved back into the trailer and told him he had to reduce his work hours to help with childcare and facilitate her work as a cleaner. I remember thinking “he’s trying so hard with his carpentry course plus working in the bar and she’s being difficult” which shows how easy it is to get sucked into the abuser’s mindset.

Loved Regina and her about turn from bitch employer to clueless, vulnerable first time mum and ultimately an ally/friend.

I thought Andi McDowell did ok but she isn’t a great actress and the role would have been handled better by someone able to portray the character’s challenges with a bit more nuance. The ranting and tortured mentally ill artist thing was all a bit on the nose.

All in all a great show and I am now playing Shoop continuously in my car!
