I can't wait. Series 1 was absolutely delightful - I'm so looking forward to it and I seem to have developped a crush on Samuel West.

@woodhill, that’s sad. Piggywoo is a great nickname.

woodhill · 05/10/2021 18:34

Yes, thanks @Cattenberg we would love some more but for not for now

FlatteredFool · 08/10/2021 23:34

Good Lord, was the cow giving birth or Tristan??! Love this series so much.

Bichette · 09/10/2021 12:35

I read the books many times and loved the original series.
I like this version but I just can't get past Mrs Hall sitting down to dinner with the 3 men. I get that they wanted to develop her character as a woman but I'm sure a housekeeper would never be so familiar.
I much prefer the grumpy, older character of the first series.

Notonthestairs · 10/10/2021 10:42

I agree it's very strange to see Mrs H sitting down to dinner with them. She's been rewritten as a mother/sister figure and a foil to the 3 men.

I think she also represents the viewer as she's generally not part of the action and her reactions (to Siegfried's misleading Tristram or James struggle with whether to go back to Scotland etc) reflect our reactions. She's the steadying force in amongst 3 quite emotional men.

I also over think these things Grin

I do like Diana. The actress played a very difficult character in Mum so I thought she'd be similar here but she's actually quite a lot of fun.

Classica · 10/10/2021 20:28

I was tense that entire episode waiting for the yelping dog to start hemorrhaging all over the place. But he didn't.

Maireas · 10/10/2021 20:38

Yes, what was the matter with that poor dog? Was it a complication or did it just want some beef wellington?

diddl · 11/10/2021 08:28

@Maireas

I wonder if they changed it because that scene was done in the film and the original tv series? Maybe keeping the spirit without repeating the same story?
The original series started more than 40yrs agoShock

I can see that they would want some differences, but I would also have thought that there would be a whole new audience to pitch it at!

diddl · 11/10/2021 08:40

I wondered if he was putting on a show like Tristan!
Maireas · 11/10/2021 09:21

I know it was 40 years ago, but it is often repeated. It was on freeview recently, that's how my kids have seen it. I was just wondering if they wanted to make it a bit different. Just musing.

diddl · 11/10/2021 16:19

"Just musing."

Well yes-so was I!

Darklane · 11/10/2021 20:33

Tricky is exactly like the first dog of my own, it’s uncanny.. I woke up on Christmas morning when I was five. It was still dark but there was this tiny bundle of fluff on my bed with a big red bow round his neck. My GG bred & showed Pekingese & it was her present to me....best Christmas present ever. We were inseparable all through my childhood & teens. Grin

I’m loving this new series. Think it’s much better cast than the previous one. Robert Hardy was too old for Siegfried

Classica · 11/10/2021 20:50

Her character in Mum was something else! Pulsating with rage.

diddl · 11/10/2021 21:32

"Robert Hardy was too old for Siegfried"

I think that he was about the same age when he started playing Siegfried as Samuel West is now!

Classica · 11/10/2021 21:43

Wow. Was he? I suppose Sam West is in his mid 50s, although looks younger, whereas in the 1970s a man in his mid 50s looked to be 60-something to our modern eyes.

Notonthestairs · 11/10/2021 22:17

I can not imagine how cute a puppy TrickyWoo would be! That would have been my ideal Christmas present too.

I liked Robert Hardy as Siegfried but he had quite an edge to him (which might be more representative of book Siegfried I can't really remember).

savagebaggagemaster · 11/10/2021 22:36

@rosy71

How is Tristan supposed to ever qualify as a vet if he doesn’t know he failed? Did he not notice that he didn’t have a graduation ceremony? This is an utterly ridiculous storyline.

I am loving it but totally agree with this. Surely at some point Siegfried will need to tell him?

In the original story I'm sure it was Tristan who was concealing his exam failure from Siegfried. James knew, and was horrified, but Tristan said, "It's alright Jim, I'll pass it at Christmas!" (Resits)
Cattenberg · 12/10/2021 20:12

Yep. According to James, Tristan was really good at memorising facts for exams, whereas James found it hard work. Presumably, Tristan failed Pathology (or was it Parasitology?) because he’d been too busy enjoying himself to do the required reading.

I wonder if they’ll show the storyline about the ghost of a monk that was seen haunting a particular road at night? I enjoyed that in the book.

Loved that! After a rubbish day Tricki Woo's gallivanting fairly cheered me up.
Clawdy · 14/10/2021 22:32

Yes, that ending was funny and sweet. A bit like the whole series!

I've only watched up to last week's episode so far

I love Mrs Hall's character

MichelleScarn · 14/10/2021 22:36

Loved that! I wanted them to have 'looooove is a many splendid thing!' As they ran to each other! Does this mean puppies?!

SophieHatterPendragon · 14/10/2021 22:57

I love this new cast / series. I remember watching the old ones with my mum so holds a special place in my childhood heart but I really enjoy these. I don’t mind the changes to mrs hall but however much I love tricky woo I wish they’d not got a new actress in I much preferred Diana Riggs depiction

I had all the books and audiobooks as a child they got me through some lonely night and I really wanted to be a vet until I realised it was no longer the same and didn’t seem as appealing to be a modern vet

FlatteredFool · 15/10/2021 11:07

Last night was such fun with Trickie's matter of the utmost delicacy. Loved all the flat cap wearing last night too. I love hats but Siegfried looked odd in his and I'd normally think he'd look good in the a sack.
